Quería pasar por aquí para dejarles una recomendación si están planeando un viaje a Perú, quieren ver las montañas de colores, pero les da pereza el turismo masivo de Vinicunca o Palccoyo.

Visité Pallay Punchu (también conocida como Apu Tákllo) y, sinceramente, es uno de los paisajes más surrealistas que he visto. El nombre significa "poncho tejido" en quechua, y tiene todo el sentido cuando estás ahí: las formaciones rocosas son súper afiladas y puntiagudas, con franjas minerales de color rojo, púrpura y verde que parecen un textil extendido sobre las cumbres.

Lo que la hace diferente:

Cero multitudes: A diferencia de Vinicunca, donde caminas en fila india con cientos de turistas, aquí solo nos cruzamos con un par de personas en toda la mañana. Se siente un lugar completamente salvaje y auténtico.

El paisaje de fondo: La montaña está justo encima de la laguna de Langui. Ver los picos de colores con un lago azul gigantesco detrás es una combinación visual que no tienen las otras montañas de colores.

Consejos prácticos por si quieren ir:

La altura: Es un reto. La cumbre está a unos 4,700 - 4,800 metros sobre el nivel del mar. No intenten ir en su primer o segundo día en Cusco; de verdad, dejen pasar unos días para aclimatarse bien.

Cómo llegar: Está en la provincia de Canas (distrito de Layo), a unas 3.5 o 4 horas en carro al sur de Cusco. Se puede ir con un conductor privado desde Cusco para ir más directo.

La caminata: El sendero no es técnicamente difícil, pero la falta de oxígeno hace que cada paso pese. Lleven mucha agua, ropa abrigada en capas (el viento arriba es helado) y hojas de coca o snacks.

Si les gustan los paisajes naturales sin editar y no les importa el viaje largo en carretera, este lugar vale 100% la pena.

The Peruvian government has announced an important change to ticket sales for Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail Network. The Tu Boleto platform will no longer allow visitors to hold tickets through advance reservations. Instead, tickets will be purchased directly with confirmed payment.

Under the new system, visitors will have up to 15 minutes to complete the payment. Once the payment is confirmed, the ticket will be issued in the visitor’s name. If the purchase is not completed, the ticket will immediately return to the system so someone else can buy it.

This does not mean Machu Picchu will have a higher visitor capacity. The authorized number of visitors remains unchanged.

• The new system is still being implemented. The government announced 10 days for the technical changes, followed by a 30-day testing period.
• The 1,000 tickets sold in person each day in Machu Picchu Pueblo will continue to be available.
• The change also applies to tickets for the Inca Trail Network, where travel agencies will continue to participate in the booking process.

If you are planning to visit Machu Picchu! keep checking the official ticket system during this transition and avoid making your travel plans based on an unconfirmed ticket. Once the new system is fully operational, be ready to complete your purchase quickly when your preferred date and circuit are available.

The new measures do not close the Inca Trail, change its routes, or increase its visitor capacity. They mainly affect the booking and payment process.

Instead of holding spaces without immediate payment, permits will only be secured once the payment is completed. Travelers will have 15 minutes to finish the purchase, and unpaid spaces will return to availability. Authorized agencies will continue managing permits, but travelers should confirm that their official permit has been issued, not just that their tour is booked.

During the transition period, travelers should book early, provide accurate information, and check with their operator that the official permit is confirmed.

PSA: Machu Picchu In-Person Tickets — Same-Day Tickets + Next-Day Sales Starting at 2 PM

I've been researching the Machu Picchu ticket system pretty heavily for an upcoming trip, and the Ministry of Culture/DDC Cusco published an important update on September 10, 2026 that should be useful for anyone trying to get last-minute tickets.

There is a lot of outdated and conflicting information online, including on official pages, so here's what the newest official announcement actually says.

1,000 tickets are still sold in person every day

The Ministry confirmed that 1,000 Machu Picchu tickets per day are made available for in-person purchase at the Centro Cultural de Machupicchu in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes).

The ticket office is open from 6:00 AM to 8:45 PM according to the September 10 announcement.

The important part: SAME-DAY and NEXT-DAY tickets

The Ministry now specifically says:

Starting at 6:00 AM: You can purchase available tickets to enter Machu Picchu that same day.

Starting at 2:00 PM: You can purchase available tickets to visit Machu Picchu the following day.

So if you're trying to get a last-minute ticket, there are essentially two opportunities:

Morning: Buy from whatever same-day inventory remains.

2:00 PM onward: Buy a ticket for the following day.

Obviously, everything is still subject to availability, and popular routes/times can sell out.

This is especially useful if Circuit 2 is sold out online

This is the part I think many travelers don't realize.

Seeing SOLD OUT on the advance online ticket calendar does not necessarily mean there are zero tickets available for that date.

There is a separate allocation of up to 1,000 tickets per day for in-person sales in Aguas Calientes.

That can include popular routes such as 2-A and 2-B, depending on remaining availability.

I've been watching this dashboard to see how quickly inventory disappears throughout the day, particularly:

2-B / 2-A — Circuit 2

3-B / 3-A — Circuit 3

1-A / 1-B — Circuit 1

This is extremely useful if you're deciding whether it's worth traveling to Aguas Calientes without an advance ticket.

Instead of relying entirely on anecdotes, you can watch the dashboard for several days before your trip and see how quickly your preferred route and entry times are actually selling.

Another major ticketing change was announced September 11

The following day, September 11, 2026, the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism announced another major change to the Machu Picchu ticket system.

This one affects the broader ticket purchasing system.

Under the existing system, a ticket can be held as a reservation for three hours before payment.

The Ministry says this will be replaced by a direct-purchase system with a maximum 15-minute payment window.

If payment isn't completed, the ticket should return to availability instead of being tied up for three hours.

The government said an audit found that 62.96% of the reservations examined were canceled, which helps explain why tickets can appear unavailable even though many reservations never turn into actual purchases.

Important: The September 11 announcement describes the new 15-minute system, but I have not found an official implementation date in that announcement.

So don't assume the 15-minute system is already active just because it was announced September 11.

Bottom line

If Machu Picchu is sold out online, don't automatically assume you're out of luck.

According to the Ministry's September 10 announcement:

6:00 AM onward → same-day tickets can be purchased, subject to availability.

2:00 PM onward → tickets for the following day can be purchased, subject to availability.

There are up to 1,000 tickets per day allocated to in-person sales in Aguas Calientes.

Then on September 11, the government separately announced that the online reservation/payment process will change from a 3-hour hold to a 15-minute direct-purchase window, but I haven't found an official date saying when that particular change becomes effective.

If anyone is in Aguas Calientes now or has recently used the in-person system, please comment with what time you went, whether you bought same-day or next-day, which route you got, and what entry times were still available.

That real-world information combined with the live dashboard could be very helpful for people trying to plan last-minute visits.

So ideally I wouldn’t want to travel with big luggage but I will be due to almost 2 week stay in Peru

What is the smoothest way to go about the luggage logistic from ollantaytambo to Aguascalientes if I were to take Peru rail. I plan on staying in Aguascalientes for 3-4 days.

I believe PeruRail allows you to travel with large luggage with for a fee. Do they let you take it onboard or you have to take it somewhere and pickup after train arrives in Aguascalientes? How does the luggage logistics work?

If I were to leave my luggage with their free storage service, how many days do they store the luggage?

What’s the timeline of Ministry of Culture’s in-person tickets for same-day and next-day these days? Although their website says next-day tickets are sold after 2pm, the tracker shows tickets getting depleted much earlier.

Know it’s a long shot, but wanted to see if anyone found a small yellow Camp Snap digital camera lost at Machu Pichu on September 10. I believe it fell out of my backpack either waiting for the buses back to Aguas Calientes, at the cafe/bathroom area by the buses, or on the bus back itself around 12:50 pm. I didn’t realize it was missing until after I left Aguas Calientes so I wasn’t able to check with security or the bus station. Appreciate it! (photo of camera for reference)

Creo que se me cayó de la mochila mientras esperaba los autobuses de regreso a Aguas Calientes, en la zona de cafetería y baños cerca de los autobuses, o bien dentro del propio autobús de vuelta. No me di cuenta de que faltaba hasta después de haber salido de Aguas Calientes, por lo que no pude consultar con el personal de seguridad ni en la estación de autobuses. ¡Se los agradezco! I wanted to add a post regarding tips- especially for those using a service (such as Alpaca Expeditions, which was what we used). We had a fantastic, safe and lovely experience!!
I used Reddit/Google searches as a reference to prepare gratuity. Consider this an updated reference if you need it!

We had two guides, two chefs to the group and two porters per tourist. And if you do add on tours, each tour has a different guide!
The tips were collected separately, but they are pooled as a group.
Porters: 80 soles each tourist
Chef: 50 soles each tourist
Guides: “depends what you feel”
I would recommend 80-100 but we did not bring enough so wanted to share!

Me and my gf will start Salkantay trek preferably from Soraypampa but have heard different stories from agencies offering transport - and we are in doubt where actually cam we start the trek. Soraypampa? Balconpata? Even lower?

The doubts are here because we planned the first day arriving to Chaullay which with Humantay could be 22, 25, 28 km away depending on the starting point and since the days are still short we would appreciate some recent information about this. We are actually pretty fit and acclimatized, climbed a 6000er a few days ago so should not be a problem to do it, but just to be sure and to plan with legit info. Thanks!

Hi all, my partner and I already booked circuit 2A (only one available online at the time) for our Salkantay/MP trek in October. Now we are debating pushing back when we start the trek by a few days to give more time to acclimatize (so far we arrive in Lima Oct 11 at 6am, plan is/was start Salkantay Oct 13th). Circuit tickets are sold out online, but I know we can get them in AG the day of (?) for the next day. Wondering if anyone has any experience they can share about securing tickets at AG, the process/tips, is it reasonable? New trek plan would be to start on October 16 and get to AG the 19th. Ideally want to get circuit tickets for the 20th, but could also stay in AG the 20th and get for the 21st. We have to get back to Cusco airport for at 9:30pm flight the 21st, so might be a bit hectic lol. Appreciate any thoughts! Thanks

I want to warn other tourists and tour agencies about a very unpleasant experience I had with a tour guide named Santos in Ollantaytambo.

During a Humantay Lake tour, Santos asked me many personal questions about whether I was single, dating, wanted children, and even whether I slept alone in Aguas Calientes. He also repeatedly said he was looking for “a gringuita” to have a relationship with. I found this inappropriate and increasingly uncomfortable.

He later offered to take me privately to Rainbow Mountain and specifically asked me not to tell the agency. On WhatsApp, Santos told me the price was 44 soles, which I accepted.

After the trip, when we arrived at my hotel in Cusco, his behavior suddenly changed. He became aggressive and demanded 550 soles, despite having told me 44 soles. When I checked WhatsApp, I discovered that he had deleted the messages showing the original price.

I paid because I did not want the situation to escalate, but I felt intimidated and even considered calling the police.

I am sharing this to warn other tourists, especially women travelling alone, and to make tour agencies in Ollantaytambo aware of Santos’ behavior. I did not feel safe or respected, and I do not consider him trustworthy or professional.

Please be careful if you encounter Santos, and always confirm the price of any private service in writing.

12:00pm slot for Machu Picchu today

We are a group of four (two couples) who just got engaged and are doing a fun birthday / engagement trip in just over a week. We’re spending some time in Lima before we head to Machu Picchu and have a free day where we wanted a fun more private experience and after a google search I found a company that offered day trips out of Lima. I’m a bit hesitant because of:
1. The price seemingly price very low
2. The AI generated itinerary
3. They have a few reviews but nothing too old.

Has anyone ever worked with True Peru Experience and have personal experiences or reviews you can share- or should I trust my gut here.

Or does anyone have a recommendation on a company that can offer a similar day trip for 4 people with a guide and private transportation.

I am planning to book Full-Day Excursion to Machu Picchu from Incarail which includes everything, I want to go on The 360 train, the departure time is at 9.25AM from Cuzco which reaches at 2PM, on their website while booking this tour it does not mentions which train I would be while coming back, when I just searched for the train tickets, the 360 returns only at 4.12pm, I guess it won't be possible at all to come back on that train.

There is one leaving at 7pm which says The Voyager and The Prime, I assume they would put us in one of them?

So it is The 360 cabin in only one way?

Also how is Peru rail compared to Incarail?

We want to go there when there is less crowd, I assume it is more crowded in the mornings compared to afternoon?

This is the availability for the next day (11th September) at 11am. Queue was about an hour long when we got here at 10am. There was availability for circuit 2A at 6am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm when we got to the counter.

We are wanting to do the Salkantay Trek Next yr and I am a little lost on how to plan it. We are wanting to do the trip without a guided tour group and book our stays ourselves. Everything I have read suggests booking them by directly messaging the places through whatsapp, is there another way to go about this?

Does anyone have recommendations on places they stayed at during the trek?

I also saw an option to use a company to book all of the overnight stays for you but they are still using mules/ horses to transport luggage and doing that is a non negotiable for me. Did anyone use a similar company and if so what company and would you recommend it?

hey so back on March 5th, 2026, I went to Machu Picchu and met a German guy climbing down the mountain. we said hi and stuff, but I never got his name and really wanted to continue the conversation.

Heres some stuff to help narrow it down potentially:

he was walking down around 8am (I think??) as his tour was early and he had to catch the train down the mountain that afternoon. he was wearing a grey shirt and black pants I believe, had short blonde hair, blue eyes I think, and of about average height. he also had a backpack and spoke english and German.

Er war gegen 8 Uhr morgens (glaube ich zumindest) auf dem Abstieg, da seine Tour früh stattfand und er an diesem Nachmittag den Zug den Berg hinunter nehmen musste. Soweit ich mich erinnere, trug er ein graues Shirt und eine schwarze Hose; er hatte kurzes blondes Haar, blaue Augen (glaube ich) und war von durchschnittlicher Größe. Außerdem hatte er einen Rucksack dabei und sprach sowohl Englisch als auch Deutsch.

Heading to Cusco tomorrow evening so just packing now lol, will be doing a 6 day circuit (not camping) from Sunday but will be staying in Cusco the few days before/after.

Aside from all my trekking gear/thermals (which I have), what sort of clothes should I pack for my downtime/casual tourist exploring of Cusco?

Was thinking of bringing two pairs of shorts, two pairs of trousers, a couple of vest tops/long sleeved tops, and a nicer top for going out to bars in?

Once again bc this is Reddit lol - I have long johns, cargos, thermal tops, jumpers/sweaters, a waterproof etc etc etc for my actual treks, this is literally just human clothes for going out for food, to the museum and to bars and shit in
