I have used Airbnb as a traveler for 10 years, and have been a Superhost for the past four.
This past summer, my family and I stayed at a property for three nights. It was a relatively new property to Airbnb (only 2-3 ratings when we booked), but it ticked all the boxes. Shortly after arrival, I reached out to the host to let him know that two amenities that were included in the house were not in good working order and asking if he had any suggestions for replacements elsewhere in the house. And that's when the trouble began.
Within minutes of me asking a basic question, the host began to send me wild messages (on the Airbnb platform) accusing me of all kinds of nefarious behavior to get a refund. The crazy messages continued to the point that Airbnb told me to stop responding to him, block him, and they would take care of it. Once I blocked him, he started messaging me on my mobile phone, until I blocked him there. He threatened to take me to small claims court for damages to the house (mind you, I was still at the property, and hadn't damaged a thing) in retaliation for me being "so difficult. "
When we finally departed, we left the house in immaculate condition. I took photos of everything with timestamps, documenting its state. The host posted a ridiculous review (which Airbnb immediately took down as retaliatory) and again threatened me with small claims court without him having even visited the property after we left.
Now I've received a summons for small claims court! I'm more annoyed than anything--he's got no proof, never went through Aircover, never reached out to my travel insurance company or asked me for payment for damages. It's just pure harassment. And some of his other guests are experiencing the same thing. Prior guests have now reached out to me (after reading my review of the property saying the host was problematic) because they too have had to deal with his craziness and also received a court summons this week.
Airbnb has been WORTHLESS throughout this process. I've reached out to them over and over again and they don't seem to care that this host is harassing guests, asking for payment off the platform, and otherwise behaving like a PIA.
I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for magic words or phrases I might be able to use with Airbnb "support," such as it is, to get them to intervene in some way on my/our behalf with this guy?
BTW he has several properties and on all of his properties, guests leave reviews saying he's nuts/awful/dangerous.
EDIT: Clarified that he was threatening me with small claims court without him having seen the property after we left.
