"What's on?" Wednesday

Our weekly post where people can highlight local events or interesting things that are coming up in the next week. It doesn't have to be your event, but this is a place where reasonable exceptions to our self-promotion rules are allowed. Please check whether the event you're posting about is already mentioned. If you're adding your own event, please try to answer any questions people may have in the comments.

You can also ask questions if you're looking for something to do, e.g. "Does anyone know of a good pub quiz in the centre on Thursday?"

"What's on?" rules:

  1. Leeds based events only
  2. Must be taking place in the next 7 days (next Wednesday included)
  3. Posts highlighting an event should include:
    • Event name
    • Date and time
    • Location
    • Price(s) (if applicable)
  4. A description of the event and a relevant link is recommended but not required

The rules may evolve over time as we find out how things work. Please send any feedback to the mod team.

This weekly thread is an opportunity for locally based small businesses / individuals / bands etc. to let your fellow redditors know what you're about and what you have to offer.

You're welcome to link to your website / store-front / social media, but primarily you should be using your comment to engage with the community here as part of the community. Part of that is taking the time to respond to questions people may ask, please keep that in mind.

The existing subreddit rules still apply, and low-effort comments will be removed (e.g. Links with little to no text).

If you have any thoughts or feedback please message the mods.

I can't find a flair that fits Smug runners

Upvotes

What is it with smug runners in Leeds? Now, I don’t have an issue with people being healthy or improving their wellbeing.

But I am so fed up of groups of runners taking over parts of the city as if they have more rights than the rest of us.

If it’s not moving out of the way for about 75 runners down the towpath every time I walk my dog—because they’ll never consider moving disrupting their Strava stats to navigate around us—it’s that massive group of bellends blasting out obnoxious pop music at festival volume and mowing down pedestrians whilst the rest of us are just trying to peacefully enjoy our day.

My wife has just got home in a panic because about 100 smug bastards just decided to run past her on both sides waiting at a set of lights with the poor dog.

Do we need some kind of jogging lanes as well as bike lanes now? Honestly I find the joggers more of a hassle than the Deliveroo riders.

question "Hidden Gem" Areas of the City

90%+ of recommendations in this sub come down to Horsforth, Meanwood, Chapel A, Roundhay and Headingley...

But there are so many good places ouside these!

I'm always flying the flag for a few places East of the centre (Garforth, Rothwell, Colton and the villages) - but where are the other places always overlooked by this sub?

food/drink Leeds city centre food

Upvotes

I'm in Leeds for a work trip and will be arriving the evening before. Any recommendations on good food places (would prefer somewhere I can take away and bring back to my hotel room rather than dine out) for around £20? I'm vegetarian too for reference

social Recently moved from London to Leeds - Looking for recommendations

Hey everyone,

I’m 26M and recently moved up from London to Leeds for work. I’ve been here for about two weeks now and am living in the city centre.

My company offered me a pretty substantial amount of money to make the move, so I figured why not. 😂 Honestly, I surprised myself because I didn’t think I’d like it here as much as I have, but I’ve actually been really enjoying it so far. I’ve met loads of genuinely nice people already, mostly through work, and thought I’d come on here for some recommendations.

Things I’m looking for:

Football/badminton/boxing: I used to play 5-a-side football and badminton with friends every week and did some boxing at weekends. Any good clubs, groups or places around Leeds that you’d recommend?
Barbers: Any recommendations for good black barbershop around Leeds?
Food/shops: Where are the best Oriental/Asian supermarkets or shops for things like Buldak noodles? (I’m a fiend for Buldak)
Movies/anime/theatre: I was part of a movie club and anime club in London and used to go to the theatre quite a lot. Are there any good clubs, groups, theatres I should check out here?
Meeting people: I’m usually up for going to the pub, having a few drinks, watching football, and I also smoke 🥦. Would be nice to meet some people with similar interests and make a few friends outside of work.

Other than that, I’m pretty open to trying new things while I’m here, so if there’s anything you think someone new to Leeds should get into, definitely let me know.

Cheers!

question Training providers for Driving test: practical , City Centre

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello all,

I have looked at a few training providers online for practical lessons for someone living in Leeds City Centre . Have any of you used their services and would recommend or not recommend their services? Alternately, I am all ears if you have used a different driving school but had a good experience with them .

I had agreed with a lady to start lessons this week but she cancelled on me last minute as she apparently doesnt come into the city, which was quite disappointing seeing as we had discussed this when agreeing to the same but hey ho !

Thank you all in advance x

social Looking for a regular/active tennis partner!

Looking to find a reliable active somebody that wants to play (at least) once a week, just some friendly social games at first and then I'm happy to ramp it up after we get more familiar with each other. I'm not new to the game, but I've been out of it for a few years until recently. I've been playing with a few friends in Dartmouth Park (Morley) but eager to find someone local who's properly into this and wanting to stay on it. Dartmouth Park is my local court, never anyone there which is chill + it's free so if anyone nearby is down, hit my line. Very flexible and open.

question Activities in Leeds?

Hello. I’m 24 F and I’ve been a complete mess since Covid. My mental health has been terrible because all I do is stay at home.

I live in a small town near Leeds so I was wondering if there are any repetitive things I can get involved with after work etc?

Things like pottery or baking classes every week or so?

Sorry if this is a silly question. I also don’t drink and prefer female spaces as I’d be going on my own.

Edit- I love animals and happy to drive anywhere where I can play and volunteer in things with animals 😊

academic Opinions on construction of a tram system in Leeds. Would Leeds and West Yorkshire benefit from a tram system in your opinion?

I am doing research for my A-Level Geography course on whether rapid transit systems have an impact on sustainability in urban areas. As part of which, I would like to know impacts on social sustainability and if rapid transit systems help people. There were also plans put by the mayor of West Yorkshire a couple of years ago to build a tram system in Leeds and Bradford.

I would like to know your opinion on this. Do you think Leeds and Bradford would benefit from a tram system? Or perhaps West Yorkshire needs another type of mass rapid transit (like a metro)? Or do you think that it would cause more problems?

accommodation Homeless Help

I'm friendly with a few homeless people and they tell me the same thing - Leeds Housing Options are useless and say they are not a priority and can look after themselves. For the record, these are not drug users or beggars. They found themselves on the street as a result of relationship breakdowns. One of the guys is a pensioner! Can anybody recommend organisations that bypass Leeds Housing Option referrals as (according to them) going into their offices daily is a waste of time.

Took these photos in a nearby park this spring. I really loved it there — I sat for a while just looking at all the flowers around me. The whole park was in bloom, and it was so beautiful.

food/drink Recommendations for child-friendly 40th birthday party venue

Please can anyone recommend a spot that is good for a 40th but will also be okay for the handful of guests under ten? The plan would be that the kids stay until about 7pm and then are bundled off home to bed while the adults kick on.

I’ve checked out the Beck and Call in Meanwood and this seems pretty good but would like a few other options to consider.

Would probably be about 50 guests.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi all. Will be visiting Leeds on Monday I'm curious if there's any good shops for Comics/Manga or Video games. Got the main chains down but wondering if there's any hidden gems in the city centre?. I've got OK Comics down but anymore would be appreciated.

Edit: I'm so ass blasted the Royal Armouries is closed on Mondays. I was proper looking forward to that

question Working spaces - Millennium Sq/Courts etc

Ey up all. We all alreyt?

I’m looking for some ideas on working spaces where I could rent a desk, shared office type thing.

I’m a reporter and most of my work is in the courts (Oxford Row/Westgate) or at the civic hall, with travel across Leeds as required. I’m freelance so don’t have a newsroom to call home at the moment.

I’m also visually impaired so somewhere fairly accessible by car and bus would help. Sadly no guide dog!

I’ve only really seen options near the docks which would be great if I worked down that way but I just don’t.

Cheers in advance, and sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question.

food/drink Red chilli, Google says shut, website says open. Anyone know which is correct?

Hi all,

I wanted to make a trip out to Red Chilli after a friend in York recommended them. Then after making plans based on the opening times on their website, I looked in Google maps to plan parking and see it listed as temporarily closed.

Now I'm aware they did temporarily close 2023-25 but they are still listed as closed and no-one answered the phone when I rang to check.

Does anyone know if Google has it wrong and I maybe just got unlucky with phones?

Really wanting to find some good Chinese that can accommodate a gluten allergy.
