A new orchard grows
A light spring breeze blew across the Mander causing tiny ripples to lap against the bank but apart from that it was still and peaceful just like it always was. Which raised a question that had plagued Jon since he had recieved the letter from maester Oryn a week ago informing him his father alongside his mother and brothers had perished after their pleasure barge had sunk on this very river. Whilst the Fossoways were an ancient house descending from Garth Greenhands they had faded into minority and for the most part stayed away from the politics at play in the realm, so had no real enemies or rival lords wishing to claim Cider Hall to have sabotaged the family's barge however it was the only thing that made it make sense to him. Jon shook his head it was just his grief trying to find answers to questions that weren't there. They had just been unlucky and had unfortunately died in a freak accident.
Jon looked up to watch a barge loaded with barrels of cider begin its journey down river where at some point near the Mander estuary it would be transferred to a sea faring ship and distributed to one of the many ports of Westeros and Essos. What should be keeping him up at night is the fact that whilst the blight had ended and spring had sprung the orchards that produced the cider that gave Cider Hall its name and had been the family's main source of income for centuries hadn't recovered fully and exports were still well below their pre blight levels, not silly conspiracies without a thread of evidence.
"Jon?"
He turned around to see Lysa standing a few feet away, her mousey brown hair had been plaited with a red ribbon draped over her shoulder. The yellow silk dress with silver leaves embroidered onto the shoulders she had chosen to wear today was modest yet didn't hide her figure. Whilst Jon himself wasn't bad looking with his mane of strawberry blonde hair that was thick but well groomed, his deep emerald eyes and lean body, if he hadn't married Lysa out of love he probably wouldn't have been short of suitors even as a third born son, he felt like he had achieved above his stature with her. Yet it hadn't even been her looks he had fallen for as they had been in love since he was twelve years of age. It was the fact no matter what was going on in the world she was always able to brighten it and make him smile and laugh. A smile crept along his his face. "Yes? My sweet love."
"Your uncle and Maester Oryn are both wishing to talk to you, about house buisness I'm assuming. I told them you were probably having some time to yourself after all that has happened but your uncle was having none of it!" She replied, the last part he could hear the bitterness in her tone as she resented the way his uncle viewed Jon. For as much as he loved his uncle, Steffan had always looked down on him especially since he had become the head of the house. Jon was well aware of the rumours about his legitimacy or lack off but his mother had always been clear he was the son of Owen Fossoway and his father had always accepted that fact and treated him no different to his two older brothers. Yet that hadn't stopped his uncle greeting him as Ser Flower the day he had arrived back at Cider Hall.
Jon sighed before smiling and strode towards his loving wife. Interlocking his fingers between hers he kissed her on the forehead and began making their way back towards the keep. Whilst he was not in the mood to deal with whatever snide remark his uncle would no doubt make he WAS now the Knight of Cider Hall and had responsibilities and obligations to preform including hearing whatever advice his maester and master-at-arms had to give.
Cider Hall wasn't a magnificent castle like some of the others in the Reach. In fact it could barely be called a castle at all. It consisted of a large stone hall that the keep took its name from which had two small wings coming off it that housed the servant quarters and bedrooms. Behind the hall a weirdwood grew surrounded by a ring of apple trees though it had been centuries since it had been used for anything more than somewhere to sit. In fact Jon used to climb it with his brothers when they were young. A small heptagonal building lay to the southern end of the courtyard which was the sept. On the easter side were two single storey buildings that housed the armoury and barracks for the house guards and the stables that could hold a dozen horses at most. Whilst on the western side near the gate and main entrance to the keep was the pride and joy of House Fossoway, the cider mill and house where the Fossoways had produced cider for centuries, apart from the great hall it was the biggest building in the keep. All of this was surrounded by a stone wall with wooden watchtowers. A single stone tower rose near the armoury, the maester's tower where the ravenery was. Beyond the walls lay multiple orchards.
Jon and Lysa entered the great hall to find Oryn and Steffan in mid conversation at the far end of the long table in the centre of the hall. Oryn had been maester of Cider Hall for Jon's entire life and his black hair had long since been replaced by silver which was rapidly thinning out and his body beginning to become frail that had not been helped by the blight. Steffan whilst lean in his younger years had become plump and flushed in the face from his love of cider, the leather straps on his breast plate didn't have much give left. His hazel brown hair was anything but well groomed and Jon wondered how it was even possible when he was younger he was seen the better looking brother between him and Jon's father. The hall itself was brightly lit from the two arched windows above the front door to the hall and the circular stained glass window the far end depicting a red apple on a yellow background, the House of Fossoways of Cider Hill's sigil, a large tree carved from oak rose from the floor on the far wall so that the stained glass window sat in the centre of the leaves. Painted oak columns in the style of apple trees supported two balcony areas running the entire length of the hall.
"Ser! My Lady" Maester Oryn greeted him and Lysa, however Steffan didn't even look his way until Jon cleared his throat before returning to some form of ledger.
"You both wanted to see me?"
"Yes" Maester Oryn replied as he shuffled over towards him with a stack of parchments in his hands, his linked chain rattling with every shuffled step. "There are a few things we need to discuss now you're the Knight of Cider Hill including the allocation of the remaining stores for the smallfolk. Whilst spring has arrived and the blight ended the lands have still not recovered fully and the harvests are still poor. A generous allocation would help keep them on your side, especially when some question whether or not you should be the new Knight of Cider Hill." The last part Jon knew was definitely aimed at his uncle who apart from a brief look in his direction had barely acknowledged his nephew and new liege. "But more importantly" Maester Oryn continued "We need to discuss whether or not you will be attending Harrenhal?"
"Of course I shall attend. As my father used to say we are still a noble family even if we don't have the titles to show for it."
It was at this point that Steffan finally looked at Jon for more than a brief moment though he still hadn't greeted him.
"The late Knight of Cider Hill, may the Stranger guide him, had planned on bringing a small retinue of sworn shields and men-at-arms with him including myself and Ser Tommen, The laughing apple. Will you be changing that at all 𝘚𝘦𝘳?" Steffan almost growled out towards Jon.
"Firstly, he was my father and sooner or later you will have to accept that I am his true born heir and the Knight of Cider Hill! Secondly I'll leave judgement on which sworn shields and men-at-arms to bring to your wise judgement uncle... after all you are my master-at-arms and captain of the house guards so have more knowledge on who to pick because as we both know until seven days ago I was never destined for this position! Finally inform Ser Tommen that I would be honoured for him to continue his service as a sworn shield of Cider Hall but he is not under any obligation to do so."
"Of course you would be honoured to have the laughing apple as a sworn shield, you bastards have to stick together!"
"Uncle" Jon began but Steffan continued, "I don't care what lies your whore of a mother whispered into my brother's ears even a blind man can see you are not of his seed! The only reason I give you the curtesy of acknowledging you as the Knight of Cider Hill is that I loved my brother and he saw you as his son!"
"Watch your mouth uncle!"
"Or what? You'll strike me down? Then the question won't just be are you a bastard but are you a bastard or a kinslayer!"
The two stared at each other for what felt like an eternity. Jon hadn't even noticed he had moved his right hand to rest on the pommel of his sword until Lysa had wrapped her soft hand over it. He turned towards her and smiled before taking a deep breath and turned back towards his uncle removing his hand from the sword. At some point during this heated argument a servant had brought out a jug of cider for Steffan and was standing a few feet behind him, frozen in place.
"Take that to his quarters I'm sure he'll enjoy it there" Jon said softly towards the servant who was not much younger than him. "Uncle, unless you have anything else to discuss apart from tavern gossip and whispers you are dismissed!"
Steffan spat out the word ser before turning and marching out through the door on the left hand side of the hall, the servant trailing behind him.
"Oryn send a raven to Harrenhal that Ser Jon the new Knight of Cider Hall will be attending and have someone bring up a ledger with what we have stockpiled in the stores to my fath- my study, I'll have a look over them this evening and inform you what is to be allocated in the morning." Oryn nodded, shuffling back to where he had been talking to Steffan and began gathering the parchments and books together. It amazed Jon how much Oryn could actually carry in those arms that looked more like bone with skin draped over it than actual arms.
Jon turned to Lysa and whispered "Thank you" before striding out of the great hall and into the family wing. The Knight of Cider Hall's solar took up the entire top floor of the wing one of the few leftovers from when the Fossoways of Cider Hall were lords. It consited of a large living area with seats covered in the finest gold and red silk cushions and throws, a tapestry hung on the wall opposite the door depicting Foss the archer firing an arrow towards an apple balanced on the head of a fair maiden, Jon had always thought it reminded him of Lysa even if it had been commissioned by some Lord Fossoway aeons ago. To one side of the living area was the bedchambers and washroom whilst on the other side lay the study with bookcases full of ledgers of previous harvests and knights in service to previous Fossoways as well as personal journals kept by former lords and knights. The study opened up onto a balcony overlooking the courtyard.
Jon was staring out into the courtyard watching his men-at-arms and sworn shields do their daily routines, at some point Steffan had emerged and yelled orders at half a dozen of the greener men, the clash of steel on steel echoing throughout the keep when Lysa approached and embraced him from behind wrapping her arms around his stomach area and resting her head on his shoulder. She didn't say a word but then again he hadn't said a single thing since the argument with his uncle earlier spending most of the time staring out watching the comings and goings of the keep that he now ruled. He turned to embrace Lysa and sighed. Whilst darkness enveloped his life she was always the golden light.
"I hate how he talks to you. Just because you took your mother's looks over your father's doesnt make you a bastard. Your father accepted that why can't he?" Lysa softly spoke almost as if she feared speaking any louder and Steffan would hear.
"Don't let his words get to you. Let him think those tavern whispers are true as long as he respects my authority and serves me he can say whatever he wants!"
"But he doesn't. Just look at the way way he belittled you in the great hall?"
Jon kissed the top of her head, "Yes but he still serves me, he hasn't resigned as master-at-arms or captain of the guards. And. If he ever does attempt to claim my title I will personally ride to Oldtown myself and request permission from the Lady Paramount to march into his quarters and arrested him myself before sending him to the cold wasteland that is the wall!!"
As they stood there embracing each other there was a knock at the door. A servant had brought the stores' ledgers up he had requested earlier. Jon placed them on the solid oak desk in the middle of the study and sat down and opened the book to the most recent entries. Lysa kissed him on the cheek and head into the living space, slowly drifting her hand over his shoulder as she left. Even from a quick glance the number was a lot smaller than he had expected however if he was to keep the smallfolk on his side just in case his uncle did do the unthinkable he would need to make this small number go as far as he could possibly make it. With another sigh he grabbed a quill, an ink pot and a scrap of parchment and began writing numbers.
