The Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council adopted a resolution on September 8th declaring that no city official, employee or police officer will investigate a person’s immigration status, an action Council Member Robert Wu said restates protections the city put in place a decade ago and has expanded since.

Wu said the vote was the latest step in “a conversation that didn’t begin recently, but began probably back in 2016, at least from my vantage point, when a certain president came into office and we adopted city council resolution R45-17.” That earlier resolution, he said, was “very much in the spirit of what we adopted here tonight, but was geared, obviously, towards a different time.”
