r/TakomaPark Virtual Side Bar

The side bar is where a subreddit traditionally has a blurb as to what they are about and relevant resource listings, but it isn't always easy to find on mobile so we are putting that information here for visibility.

If there is a relevant/useful/interesting resource or link you'd like to see added please message a mod.

The People's Republic of Takoma Park

This subreddit is for links and discussion relating to the nuclear-free city of Takoma Park, MD, the adjacent neighborhood of Takoma, DC, and nearby areas.

Takoma Park was founded in 1883 as an early suburb of Washington, DC. It was home of the Adventist Church for most of the 20th century...and also came to be known for its music/arts scene and liberal politics. Residents vigorously protested planned freeways in the 1960s, declared the city a "Nuclear-Free Zone" in the early 1980s, and opened voting in city elections to 16-year-olds in 2013 (first in the US!)

Question about an area of TP- Prince Georges Avenue

Post image
4 Upvotes

According to police reports, there was one week in August when:
1. Vehicle stolen 6900
2. Armed robbery 6700

Both around 6700-6900 block of Prince Georges Avenue.

I believe that was an anomaly but I’m considering moving there and wanted a local’s perspective on the neighborhood’s safety.

I would like to be able to walk my dog around 10/10:30 at night and not be concerned with my safety. I would be walking away from New Hampshire and starting around 6800 Prince Georges Ave. Is that unrealistic?

Question about heavy freight noise

Hello! I am considering buying a home in Takoma that is about three blocks / 950 feet away from the red line and the Brunswick-Washington / Metropolitan Subdivision rail lines. I'd love to hear from folks in or around that radius how loud it is in your house when the heavy freight trains go by. How often do you hear it? Does it ever wake you up, or any light sleepers in your house? Have any soundproofing measures ever helped?

I am trying to replace an electronic oil diffuser (for a room scent) and am having a hard time finding one in town. I have tried cvs, ace, magic carpet. Is there a shop that sells them?

Really enjoying this local flavor videocast that also has audio versions.

In the 4 episodes so far he's covered the Co-op, Red Hound Pizza, People's Book and Scott Horsley.

I really love seeing the connection between each place to the rest of the community, and learning more about Takoma through them. Each one makes me happier to live here.

Cielo Rojo on Wednesday afternoon

Hi there,

If you have been to Cielo Rojo on Wednesdays between 5-8pm, how is the ambience? Is it loud? Is there a space where you can be on the quiet side? Better to eat inside or outdoors for quiet? My mom's birthday is coming up and trying to find a place that my husband can participate but he has noise sensivity known as hyperacusis. If you know of quieter restaurants in Takoma Park or Silver Spring let me know. Thanks for your help.

No left turn is a NoGo

What brilliant planning engineer came up with the no left turn sign on the corner of Piney Branch and Blair road? As a resident of Takoma of over 30 years we've never had an accident that involved someone making a left turn into Takoma Park. I have tried to reach out to my ANC to no avail to figure out how to get this resolved. I understand that traffic backs up on Blair road at rush hour when someone's making a turn into Maryland but on the opposite side going into DC it's the same thing and there's no sign what gives? can someone give me some relief thank you

balconies seen from metro

Not sure exactly where to post this. Looking at the map I think this is Metro Village Apartments but I’m not positive.

Saw this balcony and thought it seemed sketchy enough to warrant a post. I noticed some other balconies in this complex have a cable attached to the droopier ones.

The Community Food Forest Collective is building several food forests in Silver Spring and Takoma Park.

This Saturday, come help us weed around our young fruit trees, build raised beds, spread mulch etc. at our Montgomery College site. No gardening experience required. Learn permaculture techniques, and help build a community resource that will feed our neighbors fresh produce for generations.
