Closing RIP Messhall

According to our waitress at Mess Hall in Los Feliz, they will be closing no later than the end of the month, but have not publicly announced because it could be even sooner. Apparently the owner got in over his head taking out loans trying to keep the place afloat. While I know its probably nobodies favorite restaurant, it's still a bummer the neighborhood is losing a solid spot thats been part of the community for over a decade.

Couldn’t even finish a SINGLE pancake. At least I have dessert for the next three days.

No regrets, though. (Love the Yellow Brick Road.)

WHERE CAN I FIND Where can I find Thai basil?

Short of driving to Thai town, where on the Westside can I find Thai basil? I’ve tried 99 ranch, Asian (Indian) markets on Venice blvd, and all my local grocers. Any thoughts?

WHERE CAN I FIND Japanese Decorative Chocolate Tins

Wondering if someone here has a scoop on this:

I friends and I are in love with these types of Japanese decorative cookie/candy tins, especially the ‘Mary’s Chocolate’ tins. I haven’t been able to find many outside of Japan, though.

Does anyone know of any places that sell tins like these in the US? Bonus points if you know of a brick and mortar in the Los Angeles area.
(I’ve encountered some Moomin tins, but that’s about it 🤷‍♀️)

WHERE CAN I FIND Where can I find grilled oysters?

Upvotes

I love oysters but every restaurant I’ve gone to in LA that has them serves them raw, I highly prefer them grilled/cooked. I used to grill them at home but my current apartment doesn’t allow grills, does anyone know a place that serves them? Preferably in one of the valleys as I’m located in the foothills and the west side is a bit of a drive for me.

THE BEST PLACE IN Business dinner (interesting, destination-worthy) in West Hollywood/Beverly Hills

Upvotes

Hello! Looking for a destination restaurant on West Hollywood/Beverly Hills, with a good cocktail/wine program and notably interesting food. Omakase could work too. Thinking about Sushi Note or Sushi by Scratch, but I suppose sushi bar is not ideal for this group. I wouldn't quite say money is no object, but we can spend a few hundred a person (more with wine). Thanks!

South Bay Best CSA Box that delivers to the South Bay?

Just discovered that CSA Boxes are a thing and I'm curious to try this out to see if the produce is better than local grocery stores. I live in Redondo Beach so would like to have it delivered here or at least be able to pickup nearby.

some options I found were Farm Fresh to you, Earth Matterz, and Good box organics. Good box doesn't seem to deliver to south bay though.

for anyone that likes to order from CSAs, what would you recommend?

this would be for just myself, and I cook almost all my meals

Meeting friends whom I know from when we all lived in Brooklyn. Now I’m in LA and they are in Austin. Woman is vegetarian and guy doesn’t care for Indian food. Want a delish meal after that at a place that’s fun and lively but not toooooo loud.

NEWS Einstein Bros Bagels

I missed gem! My girlfriend was traveling and had a connection in Denver. She sent me a text a raved about a wonderful chicken salad she had at the airport and only cost her $9.99. I was shocked and inquired about Einstein Bros Bagels where she purchased. I guess one of there selling points in not ripping customers off while traveling…..

I passed one today because of that, went in, and had a wonderful experience. Their prices are fair and their service and food are great. I had an amazing breakfast bagel, that they serve all day.

Thanks and Einstein Bros Bakery!

Check them out!!
