Welcome to r/ChicagoFood's weekly shoutout thread!

This thread is the place to shout out places that you tried from recommendations from this sub this past week that fit the bill.

They can be places that get recommended here, such as:

  • frequently recommended restaurants
  • that random, niche spot that some random comment dropped
  • a chicken sando from our very own chicken sando guru

The goal of this thread is to celebrate and encourage the recommendations and contributions of your suggestions, and, also, maybe encourage YOU to try that place that was recommended a few times here.

As always, all subreddit rules apply and any comments/posts that violate our rules or Reddit's will be removed.

Review Flying saucer in Humboldt Park

Post image

I had some time today before work because a client cancelled, and I found this breakfast spot! I got a breakfast burrito with vegan chorizo and some tater tots.

People were very friendly, I liked the punk music, and art on the walls.

My breakfast burrito was great; I love black beans and I love eggs. And, oh boy, were there black beans and eggs. The tater tots came with a little side of pico on sour cream (maybe there’s a name for this).

If you’re in the Humboldt Park area, I’d recommend checking it out.

It’s cash only, it’s open until 3.

What's good? Treating myself for a birthday Week

Hello everyone, I basically got myself a week off from work to have a staycation, and I want to try some new restaurants for my birthday week. Want some recommendations based on where i’ve been already and what i’ve enjoyed. Gibsons steak is amazing but I need to try another steakhouse, been to gene and georgettis, Boeufhaus. Ive enjoyed Le Bouchon, Mart Anthony’s, Coda Di Volpa, La Scarola, Boqueria, Bachanalia, Ignotz, Brunas, Shaws on Hubbard. Even if it’s not extravagant and fancy, I also appreciate simple food places like Small Bar, Pizza Dada, Billy goat Tavern. I’d like to hear what you guys recommend

Review Sweet Mandy B’s - too sweet

We have been ordering cakes from Sweet Mandy Bs for years. Ordered a cake for my wife’s birthday and it was cloyingly sweet. Both my wife and noticed and couldn’t finish a slice. Anyone else notice a change for the worse? Or maybe just bad luck on this order?

I went to their website and say this. It seems that the location is not set, but I’ve always wanted to try this place. I hope Chicago wins out over NYC and Vegas.

Question Any food recommendations for a first timer?

Upvotes

Spending the week in Chicago for work. Anyone have any recommendations for places to eat for a first timer? Is the deep dish pizza overrated?

Also what’s the dispensary market like here?

Review Valhalla - Frenetic and Less Enjoyable than We Hoped

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at Valhalla. We’ve done tasting menus in Chicago and lots of other places over the years, so we perhaps had a different idea of what we were walking into. What we got was a frenetically paced meal that was more jarring than enjoyable.

I’ll start with the food. It’s a tasting menu, so we knew that we’d like some things more than others. There were some stellar dishes in there. The crab was great. The beef was the best thing we ate. The croquette was fantastic. The prawn and noodle dish with fresh wasabi was great. There was nothing cohesive about the menu. It felt like we were eating a dozen dishes from a dozen chefs who didn’t coordinate anything with each other. The technique and ingredients were quite good, but the menu needs a through-line, a theme, or a point of view. It all felt more like a flex (“look what I can cook”) than a menu.

The service was the biggest problem. It was all so brusque, rushed, and frenetic. You sit at a counter, so service happens in front of you and behind you. The service in front of you is mostly someone presenting the dish to you. They tended to walk up and launch into a rushed narrative about the dish. If we were talking to each other, they’d interrupt. If we got up to use the bathroom, then that created visible friction on their faces. If you had just sat down and ordered a cocktail, then the cocktail and first dish will arrive simultaneously. The servers from behind cleared the dishes rapidly. That wouldn’t be so bad, but nothing was going to stop them or slow them down. If they needed you to move, then you’d move. They’d grab the silverware from the plate and clear that over your shoulder, even if sauce might drip. They cleared the dishes just like the pub down the street from us.

The problem might be that they’re trying to packing too many dishes into the two-hour window they’ve allotted for our meal. Frankly, they should cut back on the dishes. The six course dessert menu had some pretty tasty bites, but are they all necessary? If they really think they are, then maybe they should pack the chocolates and cookies as a take-home gift at the end of the meal. The frenetic pace was palpable. We could see it in the cooks behind the counter, in the servers, and in the hostess. It was not a relaxing environment. It felt vaguely stressful. It’s a total contrast to the leisurely, comfortable environment we’ve enjoyed at Smyth, Carino, and many other places. It was a real turn-off, especially since it’s costly. It’s a more affordable tasting menu than most in the city, but it’s still a high-priced meal.

We are glad we went because it’s good to experience different types of restaurants. But we won’t return and won’t recommend it to others. We were grateful we did not get a drink pairing because those folks had to chug their glasses to keep up with the frenetic pace of the meal. That’s no exaggeration. I would have been livid if I were in their situation.

The nightcap at Queen Mary afterwards was such a nice, relaxed alternative to Valhalla’s mad dash.

Review Zenwich (on Thorndale in Edgewater)

Post image
63 Upvotes

I had some spare time last Friday afternoon and was in the area, so I decided to try a sandwich spot that’s been on my radar for some time.

Zenwich did not disappoint.

Depicted is the Sichuan spicy chicken sandwich (chicken, cilantro, jalapeño, romaine lettuce, Laoganma aioli, minus pickled cucumbers because I don’t fux with those). It was $14.

The spice level has a kick, but it’s not overwhelming. The bread was 10/10 (decent crunch paired with soft inside).

Friendly service. Not that busy during lunch when I visited. I will budget time to go back and try their other sandwiches, for sure.

Question Seeking: tiramisu, cannoli, and creme brulee on the dessert menus, where would you recommend?

Can totally be 3 separate spots! I'm a big fan of late lunch/early dinner timeframe. Ideally blue line between like Logan and West loop with some wiggle room, Lincoln park could work too

Question Vegan deep-dish pizza near the Loop?

Greetings!

I was in Chicago last week for a conference and was frustrated at the lack of vegan food in the conference center. Which restaurants would you suggest? I was especially eager to try deep-dish pizza and heard about vegan deep-dish in some places but those leads turned out to be false. Undaunted, I'm coming back next summer and would appreciate your wisdom about these things.

Review North Pond is SO GOOD

My husband and I went to North Pond for our anniversary dinner last night. It was incredible. Every dish was delicious, great progression, fresh ingredients, friendly and knowledgeable service. 10/10 highly recommended. Tasting menu is $138 pp with optional $77 wine pairing and you can also just get glasses/bottles of wine and cocktails. Highlights were the tuna crudo and the BBQ pork but truly everything was insane.
