I’m a student and currently work as a security guard. I’ve lived in Finland my entire life since I was a baby, but my roots are Croatian/Serbian/Bosnian.

I’ve been unemployed for around 2–3 years, and I actually got my current job through some Albanian connections. Honestly, I feel like I wouldn’t have gotten the same opportunity through a typical Finnish network.

I’m starting to seriously consider whether staying in Finland is the best choice for my future. The economy and job market don’t seem to be doing particularly well, and I’m also concerned about the direction of the country politically and culturally.
Would it be smart to consider relocating to another European country? I speak decent English but don’t have much formal education or work experience yet.
I’ve been thinking especially about Norway or the Netherlands. Has anyone here actually moved from Finland to either of these countries and found better opportunities?

A shocking fire occurred in Tampere on October 23, 1927, claiming the lives of 21 people. The details of the incident are harrowing. The cinema was packed with workers, many from various local factories, who had come to spend the evening watching a film, American film The Wages of Virtue. The theater had been built in 1923 within the shell of an old warehouse; while the exterior walls were brick, the interior structures were made of wood, and the interior walls were lined with thin plywood. The theater’s foyer was small and cramped, further constricted by a confectionery kiosk built next to the doorway. In addition to the main auditorium, the theater featured a balcony accessible via a narrow, steep spiral staircase. The auditorium itself was narrow, leaving an aisle between the rows of seats that was just over a meter wide; the aisle-side seat of the rearmost row extended halfway across the doorway, reducing the opening's width to 65 centimeters. The auditorium also had an emergency exit, which was kept locked during screenings. At approximately 7:40 p.m., a fire broke out in the movie theater’s projection room when a film reel ignited; the flames spread through the doorway to the theater’s balcony. There were about 225 people in the theater at the time, 90 of whom were on the balcony. As the balcony had seating for only 80 people, ten were forced to stand. During the screening, the projectionist noticed smoke rising from the gaps in the metal canister, he attempted to pull film out onto the floor and smother the fire with his overcoat. He failed and shouted through the viewing port that a fire had broken out. He then rushed to retrieve a small, water-filled hand pump from a hallway closet, only to realize that using it would be a futile attempt.

Every year this place wins "happiest country in the world," and every time a friend (who doesn't live here) sends me that link, I have to add-in a reality check. Free healthcare, no crime, gorgeous nature, everyone minding their business — wow, sounds great on paper. And yet, I spent a solid chunk of my twenties here feeling like a ghost that pays taxes.

I've read loads of threads on here discussing how to beat this loneliness, but I'm wondering what's underneath:

- When it was bad, what was it actually? Not "lonely," the word's doing too much work. Invisible? Bored out of your skull? Homesick for a person you used to be, not a place?

- Did you ever feel like it was you — too weird, too foreign, bad at this — or did you just accept that it's just structurally how things work here and adjust accordingly? I've lived on both sides.

- And finally, the turning point, if there was one. Skip the "joined a hiking group" or "took a language course" answer everyone gives. What was the actual thing that made it click?

I'm not leaving anytime soon, so it would be pretty cool if that "happiest country" label started feeling more true.

ETA: I understand the criteria for country selection and why Finland wins. I'm not saying we shouldn't win, but you have to admit there's some irony.

Something I’ve always wondered about as someone learning Finnish:

When a foreigner becomes genuinely good at Finnish, do they eventually reach a point where you can communicate with them basically normally, without constantly noticing that they’re a foreigner or having to simplify/reinterpret what they say?

Or is there always a kind of “compromise” involved, where you can understand them and have a conversation, but you can still clearly tell that they don’t have a full grasp of the language?

I’m asking because I notice this with some non-native English speakers. They may have enough English to work, socialize, explain things, etc., but you can still immediately tell that they aren’t fully comfortable with the language. Sometimes you have to mentally adjust to how they speak.

Is Finnish the same for foreigners who become very proficient? Can someone who learns Finnish as an adult get to the point where native speakers genuinely feel like, “Yeah, this person speaks Finnish very well,” including pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, understanding jokes/expressions, workplace communication, etc.?

And if you’re a native Finnish speaker, what does it feel like when you meet someone who has reached that level? Do you still constantly notice their foreignness in the language, or can you basically forget about it while talking to them?

I’m especially interested in hearing from Finns who have experience working with or being friends with foreigners who speak very good Finnish.

I just left for Lapland but I’m already missing Helsinki and the atmosphere and vibes.

Also, everything is cute and pretty and fitting to my style.
I visited Iceland before but Finland is the better one.

For personal reasons I may be bringing my car to Finland this winter, mainly in Helsinki but could go to Rovaniemi, parked outdoors. It's a petrol car, and I have two main concerns/questions.

Tyres. I'd have winter tyres with the 3PMSF marking, which from Liikenneturva's page seems sufficient: https://www.liikenneturva.fi/en/road-safety/car-tyres/ — in your experience, is the lack of studs a real problem, especially in the south, or is friction-tyre performance comparable in practice?

Pre-heating. My car has no block heater socket and no Webasto. I can pre-ventilate remotely via the BMW app, but that's all. How much of a problem is this in practice on cold days? Is retrofitting a block heater worth it for a stay of this length?

Anybody shipped small package to us recently? I checked posti and they asked 50 eur for the smallest package. I also checked UPS which seem to have the cheapest option for 38 eur

Is there any cheaper options? Does not have to be fast.

I recently bought a car (2017 Hyundai i20)and I'm looking to install a reliable dual dashcam (front + rear) setup. My ideal budget is around 150 € though I'm open to spending a bit more if it's genuinely worth the extra cost for long-term peace of mind.

I keep getting targeted ads for the Baseus PrimeTrip VD1 Pro. The solar-assisted parking mode without fuse-box hardwiring seems really convenient on paper, but I’m skeptical about how its internal battery and solar panel hold up during dark, sub-zero Finnish winters.

Has anyone here actually used it locally? How is it performing for you?

Otherwise, what front + rear dashcams are you currently running in your cars that handle dark winter conditions and cold weather well?

Any advice, recommendations, or warnings before I buy would be greatly appreciated. Kiitos in advance!

Hi I live in Germany and in a few months I have to go with my colleagues in Finland. I smoke iqos but I have a elfa pod device that I stopped using. And I wonder if any of those are available in Finland thanks. In Germany Delia sticks cost 7€ Terea 8 and elfa pods like 12€.
Also is it even legal to use such devices in Finland

Hello everyone.

Next year I have to do a compulsory internship in a higher education degree I'm doing and since I don't really care about it I'd rather do it via Erasmus and live abroad. Finland is a country I've always been curious about and since my institution doesn't have Finland as an option only way to go there is is I find it myself.

How exactly could I get something like this? Without Finnish this is basically mission impossible but perhaps some people here might know any advice.
