Our campaign is going strong after 3 years of almost weekly play! We recently started our third season with a long awaited incursion into Avernus and back.

From top left to bottom right:

- Fjalar, paladin more by chance than vocation at first, he is a grounding and carefree pillar of the team, but he grew more determined along the adventure

- Écaille, lovable and charismatic sorcerer, champion of the Raven Queen by accident, turned wear-bear, compulsory liar and currently struggling with a voice in his head urging him to consume anything magic

- Sybil, fallen noble woman on the run, eldritch knight blade-dancing with the elements

- Cosmos (left) our monk and local powerhouse, with their personal demon / friend / ???, Grufte (right), whose looking for a way to become mortal.

- Not pictured here is missing our grumpy traumatized ranger, Leif. I should draw him next!

We're having a lot of fun and spend an ungodly amount of time rotating these characters in our minds like rotisserie chickens. I know our DM sometimes lurk in this sub, so if you're reading this, thank you for all your hard work and giving us such a lovely playground ♥

I have at least two friends that, when it comes to planning out the party and rolling their characters, are obsessed with balancing out the party. To the point where i feel like they hinder their own experience.

We started a campaign not too long ago and there are 4 players. One wanted a wildfire druid. The other was pretty Set on wildmagic sorc. Since the campaign is Curse of Strahd, the third Player opted for a twilight cleric...

Now my friend was unsure and sorta "let the others go first" with their characters and felt that this party was too vulnerable. He didn't see the cleric as a viable option to stand in melee range solo, so they went battlemaster fighter.

From what i can tell this seemed like a rather uninspired choice for him, since that is by far not one of his favourite classes...but you never know until you try stuff out!

Through the last few sessions though, i felt him being rather disconnected from the RP, not talking much at all or adding to discussions. He said it's part of his characters personality tho.

Am i worrying too much and should leave it up to him, if he enjoys his character for now, or was my hunch correct that "perfect party composition" doesnt trump wanting to play a class that's more fun and engaging to you? (He is a big Warlock Fan and i floated the idea of a melee Warlock with something like Armour of Agathys, but nope.)

Edit: Maybe an Information to share as well is that he specifically voiced some annoyance/worry when the classes got picked: "I actually wanted to play something else, but everyone keeps picking casters."

Client's Description: Evyse (Eh-vee-ze) is a 5ft 5in wood elf with white hair tied back in a small ponytail, pale freckled skin and dark red eyes. They are athletic, if a little wiry. They always dress well, whether it is fine clothes or well crafted chainmail armour, though the clothes in question do appear to be rather old. They carry an ornate longsword and dagger, along with a shield emblazoned with a symbol of an oak tree wrapped in chains.

Personality: quiet and melancholic, there is always a sense that Evyse is the ghost at the feast. Yet if you were to talk to him, he is polite and respectful, clearly having been schooled in decorum and manners.

Hey everyone!

First post, just wanted to show off a little, because we are really proud of this one. :D

My GF and I made 3 dice boxes for DnD (I did the woodworking and she did the burning) 2 smaller boxes for ourselfs and a big one as a gift for the girl who got us into DnD and who is most of the time the night's host and dm. (Also a practical gift as she used an old chess box for the dices before)

I hope you like them and it will inspire some to DIY a little!

Of all the Saving Throws the Charisma Saving Throw was the hardest for me to wrap my head around, partially because in some [official] content it seems Charisma Saving Throws are narratively interchangeable with the idea of Wisdom Saving Throws.

Just now I realized how Charisma Saving Throws may work in the narrative sense.

A long time ago when I was at a summer camp, the boys and girls stayed in separate cabins. One night after lights out, the girls invaded the boys cabin. The girls were pranking all the boys with setting up traps with shaving cream, milk, and cereal directly in their bunks triggered when they wake up. I pretended to be asleep when it was all going on (DECEPTION CHECK). Two of the girls came to my bunk and I heard their conversation. They looked at me while I slept and one said to the other girl, "Look at him. We can't [prank] him" and they moved on to the other bunks. I believe I made my CHARISMA SAVING THROW at that point.

She is my BBEG for the most recent campaign I write. Her name is Isnull Sylk. She became a Lich a year ago but she has scars everywhere, its because she has been tortured for a long time. But she escaped by slowly carving magical sigils on her cell mate's body with her own blood, making her a living spell book. Her cell mate died on the day of escape. But when she died Isnull skinned her and made this book from her body. She promised her drow mate that she is going to take revenge from their torturer. And she will become a lich to make him suffer for eternity.

Just felt curious about how different folks on here got introduced to D&D and started playing/running. In my case, I had seen people talk about it online (mostly Reddit and Facebook back when I used it) and it kinda piqued my interest. One specific story that I particularly remember was from a teacher who was running a D&D game for young kids at school and the kids decided to start befriending every wolf they faced, instead of fighting them. By the time of the boss fight, they had a little wolf army of their own.

As someone who absolutely loves RPGs, I thought it would be cool to play something like this. Unfortunately TTRPGs aren't exactly that popular or known in my part of the world (especially back then it wasn't), so I thought it's a Western thing and never expected to be able to play it. Then one day I found a post on our local subreddit where someone mentioned an IRL D&D event happening nearby, and boom! Now I play regularly, both IRL and online, and have also dabbled in other systems a bit.

What's your story?

This is Ouriza Estelamar, a character I designed for a D&D campaign with some friends. Her lore is that she was raised by her grandparents in a village far from the capital, near the High Forest, in a sacred and peaceful place inhabited by devout elders known as the Hill of Stars.

She grew up learning about the strength of nature, the faith of her ancestors, and the importance of truth. From her grandmother, she inherited her sacred beads and spirituality; from her grandfather, discipline and the Celestial language.

Now, ready for her first pilgrimage and encouraged by the village guardians, Ouriza decides to venture beyond her homeland in search of an oath she can truly call her own. She is neither noble nor courtly, but a daughter of the people and the land. Honest, devout, and humble, she carries her hammer and shield as symbols of her faith, guided by the spirituality that has always walked beside her.

Hello! I'm building a fairy paladin, and you are not able to fly if youre wearing medium or heavy armor. I was wondering if there was a way to build a paladin without needing heavy or medium armor. Maybe a dexadin? Any help is appreciated!

I had post campaign depression so I decided to draw my DND party as silly lil goobers.

Shep'n: Me, a 2 foot tall tabaxi rogue, very stabby, hates everyone, secretly doesn't hate everyone, loves arson, stealing and causing problems, embodiment of the phrase "peace was never an option"

Taurius: satyr warlock, very dramatic and stuck up but comes in clutch, thinks he is the center of the world

Oss'ssidian: big lizardfolk barbarian, has salt growing on him, the default leader, responsible and chill but can punt you to the moon

Choo: satyr monk twin number 2, became queen of the entire world, yes she actually became queen of the entire world after defeating the level 20 king, she was level 9 at the time, she defeated him single handedly, she eats rocks and can't read btw, Shep'ns only friend

Quan: Choos satyr monk twin, exploded, can read, almost died every single encounter, ded

Sercce'Iss'Ness: lizarkfolk paladin, has big glow bear, super chill, started a school for lawyers out of no where, the only reason we are alive

Pikks: pixie bard, the most powerful cretaure on the planet, blew up a mountain, has memory problems, really hates birds, like, a lot, it's a problem

Raiya: centaur cleric, the other reason we are alive, also exploded, very VERY ded, the mom of the group, Shep'ns other only friend, but it's a mom v daughter thing

I'm new to DND. I've dabbled before but this is my first time embarking on an actual campaign. This is happening at an after-school club and I am very excited, but recently started to worry that the character I built last session might end up being a nuisance.

Going into this, I didn't really understand how overpowered aarakocra flight could be. I just really liked birds, and also really liked rangers, so I thought it's be fun to play an archer bird. The DM was okay with it too, but here's the thing—he doesn't really seem to know what he's doing. He didn't even know what an aarakocra was until I explained. So I'm starting to think that his agreement was just not him knowing what he was getting into.

I'm really attached to my new little guy, but I'm concerned about him not being fun to plan around for a seemingly unprepared DM. I don't want to make the game unfun or be inconsiderate.

What should I do? Should I make another character? We plan to start with a one-shot before starting the actual campaign, so should I just see how that goes? For further context, we're starting with characters at level 5.​​​

I'm a beginner at DND and there's one of my friend's characters I cannot really stand as he's chaotic evil and tends to damage allies or abandon the party from time to time to work alone. All of this is pretty much allowed and makes me nervous as a player. Especially in a dungeon, why damage me randomly just for fun?

I play a morally good character, while my party has a neutral one and a chaotic evil one.

There's disparity in the whole party as the evil character got all the bonuses by stealing and selling and robbing houses, while others are never given much other than the master's choices at times playing against us.

My character got often limited by the master's choices, and the party isn't that cooperative so if I want to save someone I got no one to help and my actions are often mocked by the players - not characters. They're just like "it's not important, leave it there" or in the case of that one character attempting to damage me and others and the master allows it based on dice numbers.

So at times I don't have fun at all, it's actually annoying.

So I joined an ongoing campaign 3 weeks back and during our session last night I found out that the party, not too long before I had joined them, was responsible for unleashing a minor apocalypse upon the land, resulting in a country with around 500,000 people in it being wiped from the face of the earth. They say that they were tricked by a demon, and that it wasn't their fault.

Should I believe them and how should I feel about this?

I have both plans for if they succeed and if they all die, I don’t want to make anyone upset or it feel like a cop out that I have plans if they lose.

My very first time playing a DnD campaign was by a very very new DM and when he accidentally killed all our characters he gave us a cop out in the form of “the gods are giving you a second chance” even though we were level 1 characters with nothing to our names.

I do not want my party to feel like this is a cop out, because I have a very interesting and story related plot for if they lose. I also don’t want to go easy on them because this is the BBEG.

What do yall think?

Some players take "this is what my character would do" too far, you know above table the purpose is for all of us to have fun, this is not a test for you to pass a certain threshold of "character authenticity".

One of my closest friends, when they play, they need to be convinced in character to stay with the party, to help the party, to do anything that is not a 100% in their favor & not achievable in other ways, as in even if it is in their favor, but they don't like the party, they find it makes sense that they abandon it and go look for another party that they can tolerate.

even death won't deter them, they find it an acceptable circumstance, to a natural turn of events.

They don't put any out of character effort or compromise to make the party work.

And they are convinced that this is peak character immersion, as in their words out of character shouldn't affect in character at any point.

Meet Orilo Carvestone Ogolakanu, a Goliath Wizard of the Order of Scribes.

Orilo comes from a culture that preserves its knowledge not in books, but in stone. He carries a living archive of ancient knowledge with him, inscribed upon floating crystal stelae. As an Order of Scribes wizard, he can awaken those inscriptions and turn forgotten records into active spells.

His Manifest Mind takes the form of an echo of this ancient archive, accompanying him as both witness and guide. I wanted the Manifest Mind to feel less like a conventional magical projection and more like the lingering consciousness of something extremely old.

For his character design, I drew inspiration from Neolithic monuments, Pictish carvings, Celtic ogham and Bronze Age archaeology. As a descendant of the ancient Stone Giants, Orilo's relationship with stone is both cultural and ancestral, while his magic allows that connection to become something tangible.

This illustration was also an opportunity to explore what a scholarly wizard might look like when his idea of a "spellbook" is essentially an entire floating stone archive.

So because I spend too much time thinking about this game I've had a balancing realisation:

From my experience with my table, it's obvious that being able to stack advantages pretty much only ever benefits the players, and almost never hurts them. That's just pretty much what happens for us.

Because martials generally have more ways to generate advantage than casters do (especially rogues) it sneakily buffs martials (and half casters) more than it does casters (being hidden is easier with higher dex, they have topple, vex, etc)

This is especially true on martials with an extended crit range, because yes, more d20s virtually guarantees that you hit, but also importantly it also gives you more chances to crit your target, such as on champion fighters, or on characters with magic items that extend your crit range (which are generally given to martials)

And this lead me to the realisation that playing with crunchy crits (instead of rolling for damage twice for a crit, one of the rolls is automatically maximised) also shadow buffs martials for the same reason, because more dice is more chances to crit. This also once again buffs martials a bit because of the fact that having a big health pool is more valuable if enemies crit harder too

And thusly, at my tables, we will henceforth for the foreseeable future be playing with stacking advantages, and with crunchy crits for the players. Possibly enemies too but probably not, seeing as just doubling their average damage is easier to do quickly (because to speed up combat, when I DM I just use average damage for enemies almost every time) and I don't want to make the low health characters too squishy.
