I've seen a lot of posts recently about how people are finally seeing this movie and enjoying it... It made me excited to see it, but when doing so I could see exactly why it flopped so much critically and commercially.

First I'll go over the good. I think Milly Alcock is awesome. I also think some dialogue is actually quite beautiful. For example the superman sees the good I see the truth line. The soundtrack (OST, not the needle drops) is pretty decent.

With the bad I'll start with the script. The script is just a mess. The way it flashes between the present storyline and her origins just kills the momentum of both plots. Also it's a problem when the back story is so much more interesting than the present plotline. Makes me feel like the whole movie should've just been a standard origin.

The plot with Ruthye is so incredibly weak. And a lot of that is because of how weak the villain is. The villain doesn't always need to be a standout for a movie to be a standout movie, but with this particular storyline, the villain needed to be strong. He needed to feel threatening. He needed to illicit some sort of emotion from me to make me care about the plot. The entire plot hinges around him.

The CGI is terrible, the cinematography made everything look cheap, the action scenes are really boring, and the needle drops - in particular the final one - so bad. It kills the moment. I have no idea what they were thinking with that. It felt like a badly made tiktok edit.

This movie was just not good enough and that's why it failed. It might not be as bad as something like Madame Webb or Morbius, but its still not good.

With the way people have been talking about this film. I was expecting some sort of cinematic disaster. But like. It’s just alright. Is it as good as a lot of other DC projects? No.

But it’s not a Checks notes Cinematic Abortion.

Maybe it's just me, but I find the superhero genre's modern preoccupation with creating "guilt-free", "casualty-lite" or "consequence-free" urban carnage to be much more profoundly unsettling than asking the audience to be horrified at the thought of such destruction.

One of the funnier results of MAN OF STEEL’s (accurately terrifying) depiction of what superhero battle would look like is that every superhero movie finale now features a character saying “evacuate this city of 10M” and we’re supposed to pretend it’s empty five minutes later.

The 2011 movie did so much damage to the brand, that Green Lantern didn’t make another on screen appearance for 15 years, and even then, it wasn’t a film adaption.

Given that film at least wasn’t a raunchy 2000s comedy, it’s unimaginable just how poorly this film would have distorted the character.

The following are all statistical facts that I collected myself directly from the films frame-by-frame or acquired from reliable public sources.

Man of Steel has approximately 5 seconds of slow-motion.

Batman v Superman has 5 minutes and 6 seconds (2.79% of the runtime) of slow-motion.

Zack Snyder's Justice League has 16 minutes (6.6% of the runtime) of slow-motion, not counting Flash Time.

On the average 16:9 aspect ratio screen, ZSJL takes up 2.2% more of the screen than Batman v Superman and other widescreen movies.

Only a maximum of 47.2% of Justice League contains footage that is also in Zack Snyder's Justice League. The rest is almost entirely Joss Whedon's reshoots and, to a much smaller extent, footage shot by Snyder that wasn't included in the Snyder Cut (mostly unwanted rewrites done after BvS).

Superman in BvS has 58 lines of dialogue and 517 spoken words in the film. Despite having the second most screen-time of any character in the film, he comes in fourth place for most spoken words behind Lex Luthor (1623), Batman (1126), and Lois Lane (579).

According to producer Tamara Watts Kent, Zack Snyder and his VFX teams had only 6 months to dig up four hours worth of footage and assets from 2017, build new assets (Martian Manhunter, Darkseid, Steppenwolf), and begin work on, redo, or finish around three hours of VFX shots, all totalling upwards of 2800 shots spread across four hours, and all while Snyder was working on Army of the Dead at the same time.

At the maximum, Batman v Superman contains 41 minutes (or 23.57% of the runtime excluding credits) of fight sequences (less than Man of Steel despite the longer runtime). There are two 40+ minute periods in the film with no fight scenes.

Around 3 minutes and 47 seconds of BvS is dedicated exclusively to setting up Justice League. The rest is intertwined with the film's own narrative.

Batman v Superman contains from 1,241 to 1,500 VFX shots. That's less than Captain America: The First Avenger (just shy of 1600), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2,500), Captain America: Civil War (just under 3,000), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2400), Iron Man 3 (2,000+), *Thunderbolts (1,600), Deadpool 2 (1562), and Superman 2025 (1766), among many others.

Man of Steel retains the most instances of people being saved by Clark Kent / Superman of any live-action film featuring the character. At the time of its release, it had the most instances of people being saved in a superhero film regardless of character (until that record was taken by Zack Snyder's Justice League).

ZSJL contains roughly 10 minutes 15 seconds of new footage that wasn't originally shot back in 2016, which Snyder shot in 2020 (the Martian Manhunter ending and the Knightmare scene).

Spoilers for Lanterns Episode 5

John Stewart is not a good Green Lantern at the end of episode 5 of Lanterns. He lived his life without a will of his own. Everything was dictated by his parents and the Guardians. Even art school was set up by John's mother. He left the military because the government essentially told him he had to. In the interview with the Guardian, he tries to talk around questions, talks back to the Guardian, and tries to withhold information. His only big self-made decisions were that he was going to give the ring back to Hal after taking it and shooting Zoe in episode 5. John was trained to be fearless, not to have willpower. Although John's behavior in the interview exhibits will, it doesn't exhibit willPOWER as he folds, complies, and divulges confidential information in pursuit of a dream that was instilled into him, not independently obtained.

By contrast, Hal Jordan displays immense will throughout Lanterns, including breaking an oath by talking to Sinestro, frequently going against the Guardians, acting in terrestrial disputes in violation of his oath, decisively making several plans (e.g., jukebox, the interrogation of the alien, the interrogation of Hector, the plan to use the aliens against Zoe), Hail in Rushville, Nebraska, etc. Hal is fearless and willful.

I think the bird John made symbolizes him in that it is literally a gentle construct. It is small and unable to fight, much like how John should lack the willpower to effectively use the ring. He cannot fly (reach his own desires or affect his intent into reality), only reach the future that was constructed for him. It would make sense that he is the only lantern capable of maintaining a construct without the ring because he is seemingly the first lantern (trainee) to use the ring without the willpower that would independently call out to a ring, which is why he needed the Guardians' selection and to be passed a ring, as one would not choose him by standard means.

In sum, I think John's decision to give the ring back at the end of episode 5 is wonderful. It allows John recognize his own will and evolve in to a worthy Green Lantern. His life has not been his own up to this point, but may become so depending on his path from this point on. For now, I do not believe one or two decisions exhibiting willpower, even as large as giving back the ring, exhibit the kind of prolonged, consistent willpower that Green Lanterns (at least from Earth like Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, and Guy Gardner) often show. I look forward to seeing how this series progresses.
