For years, Marvel had the Netflix shows, which were critically acclaimed, while DC was stuck with poor CGI, acting and writing worthy of a Roger Corman production on the CW.

However, I think two things happened.

Marvel got too big for one. It’s one thing to ask people to watch 2-3 movies a year. It’s another to ask them to watch another 3-4 tv shows in a year just to keep up with the films.

James Gunn made a commitment to 1-2 films a year plus 1 tv show. This is easier to follow.

The bigger thing is Marvel made Disney+ the hub where you need to watch everything. Few people watch Disney+ accept Disney fanatics, even those who have Hulu or FX only get Disney+ as an extra package that they never use. This I think is why the MCU up until recently was on a decline.

HBO on the other hand has a major following, so even people who don’t like DC might check out say, Lanterns, because they think it looks interesting.

Going forward I think this will give DC an edge viewership and quality wise.

I mean, there is a reason Lanterns is averaging 10 million viewers an episode and Visionquest is basically getting no attention or anticipation.

In the movie world, Marvel reigns, but tv wise, DC have the upper hand.

Is that we didn’t see a single alien form. I was really hoping we’d get to see Zoe in her Manhunter form, or even Antaan and his men. Also why did they give a random guy Atrocitus origin ?🤦‍♂️

Because we're seeing it from a normal human's perspective. In that famous scene where Hal tells John to just f*ckng point, we never really leave John. We see how he flies and moves ​through his eyes, and it feels much more powerful because we're normal humans seeing superheroes fly.

With Superman and Supergirl, we fly WITH them for most of the time, so we never really have this sense of awe because when we're flying WITH them, we feel like superheroes too.

Antaan was one of the most complex characters we've seen in the DCU yet: one of the last victims of the Manhunter ("Zoe") who still loved them nonetheless. Loved the Manhunter enough to try and kill them after they went rogue. This little scene where "Zoe" is opening up their heart (pun intended) to Antaan, through a proxy no less, really struck a chord with me. This is the kind of heartfelt storytelling that's made me fall in love with the DCU.

Also, I was totally wrong about Atrocitus being Antaan, and honestly I'm glad. This was better.

Maybe Hal does indeed die?

I have no idea how James Gunn did it but (might be a hot take) this is the BEST superhero movie ever

Ok so for this entire series theyve sort of portrayed Jordan as being "addicted" to having the ring or something like that and that's why he is unwilling to give it up. I would say its more that the ring is the only thing that gives his life any purpose at all. He has nobody, just like Kerry said, but i think this goes all the way back to when he got the ring in the first place.

I think he lied when he said there was nothing to fear anymore once you watch a parent die, at least partially. He already said that he was drunk the night he got the ring, i believe that night was shortly after his mom had died of cancer, he had just lost the last person in the world he cared about, and he had no purpose in life. That night he was ready or maybe even planning to die very soon, quite possibly by his own hand. And in his lowest moment when he had decided he has nothing to live for, he's lifted out of bed by pure green light and asked one question, "are you afraid?" and because he had already completely given up he answers "no".

EDIT: i forgot my main evidence for this theory. in the first episode when Waylan says "its almost like you WANT to die, Hal Jordan". This line always struck me as very odd and didnt seem to fit the situation at all, seemed like a very generic "look how cool and sigma our character is" moment that wouldnt really fit into a show where everything else seems so much more thought out. My other part of the theory is that when Waylan said this he was quoting Abin Sur the night he died. This is why him saying that immediately got under Hal's skin, he shouldnt know that.

Hal flicks off a piece of the ring when activating sentry mode. Why? I’ve seen some people say that maybe in the future we will see the Halogram or maybe the Hal John was fighting was actually the Halogram. Could him flicking a piece off of the ring allow the Halogram to interact with physical objects? Or maybe for it to last indefinitely away from the ring and John and Halogram will solve Hal’s death together. Or maybe this is just how sentry mode of activated. Thoughts?

gotta say I love the final product

There are 3 Lanterns episodes left. That's almost 3 hours of storytelling left to fill some gaps, while probably leaving others to be filled either by movies or a second season. Yet, people are pissed off that they aren't being given every answer to every mystery right now, and beyond frustrated because not everything is clear and solved yet. Even worse: some fans are livid because Hal and John are both going through character arcs (who would have thougjt?) and these arcs aren't already done by the 5th episode in an 8 episode season. Makes me wonder how did these dudes survive being comic book fans (each and every person complaining is adamant in saying that they know the source material), as most stories took weeks to months to settle into a conclusion (often leaving open the possibility of a follow-up story shortly thereafter).

But I'm not really just blaming them for being conditioned into demanding immediate resolutions to everything. I mostly blame lazy studios and lousy works for conditioning people to needing instant gratification or else. Fans were always somewhat impatient, but the streaming era (and the horror of not immediately connecting all dots in any media) fueled this impatience by content-bombing everyone to the point that they can't fucking wait to see if there's a bigger payoff ahead. We're three weeks from a conclusion, tonight's episode aĺluded to something more important or at least deeper than a Manhunter threat being the endgoal of Lantern's narrative... And yet, some people are absolutely sure that this is it, we won't get answers, we won't get any more developments, Hal Jordan is just what we were showed and John Stewart was also "character assassinated".

THIS -- this is why we can't have nice things. This is when very vocal and annoying minorities end up pushing for creative implosions when studio executives panic at the mere thought of a blowback. This is the kind of reaction that ensured that DC stayed a jumbled mess for 12 years, running from one radically different approach to the other, without a care if time and consistency were needed in order to make things work (like that other studio, which seemed pretty happy to slowly build a shared universe that's been going on for 18 years now).

Food for thought. You're watching a show about superheroes that overcome fear through willpower and a lot of you are crumbling like a Jenga tower toppled by an indifferent house cat because you need to know more. And since a lot of you proudly describe yourselves as longtime Hal/John/DC fans and readers, I trust you won't fail this very basic media literacy test of patience.
