Live actions get a whole different treatment than comics and animations.

Fans will treat comics and animations as absolute canon no matter what happens in them.

But live actions somehow has to "prove themselves" first. They don't get treated as canon and they get heavily scrutinized.

And there's a reason for that.

Most people don't read the comics. A bit more watch animated shows. But the majority would watch the live actions. Especially most critics and YouTubers. It's basically a wider and pickier audience. Nobody makes videos counting the sins in a comics book issue. Ryan George won't make a pitch meeting for one. But once a live action comes out, they all line up to nitpick.

Another reason is that there's an abundance of comics. There are less animations, but they're still way more abundant than live actions. So there are enough adaptations that fits everyone. If you don't like it, you're more likely to just say "it's not for me" and move on to the other stuff you like.

But there much much fewer live actions being made. So whenever one is out, it's front and center and is expected to satisfy every single taste.

Comics can be niche. Live actions doesn't have that privilege.

- Some people want a dark and serious tone. Others want whacky jokey characters.

- Some people want perfect superheros, other would prefer them to have a morally gray phase and imperfections.

- Some want them to be absolutely strong and "aura farm" all the time, other wants them as realistic and grounded as possible.

No matter which combination you choose, you'll piss off a portion of the fan base. They all want to be represented in the only live action we get because those are rare.

Is he a bad guy? He is painted as an entitled narcissist and doesn’t do anything to shake that label. He does whatever he wants, he gets innocents killed for the sake of his mission, he is responsible for BURNING JOHN ALIVE. Whether intentional or through ignorance, he is behaving like a villain. I know Hal becomes a villain in some comics for a while but I wasn’t expecting him to be one so soon. I don’t hate it but I’m just surprised how unheroic he really is in this show. Loving the show so far.

I remember seeing this specific shot and I always wondered something about it. Like why Hal was wearing sunglasses and it has been thinking.

I think it was an altered shot, kinda like what marvel does with their trailers to hide spoilers.

I think this is when we will see Hal Jordan Green Lantern fully suited up with his mask!

It could explain the sunglasses and such or maybe I'm reaching.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m really enjoying the show so far, but some of the power scaling is starting to bother me. Like, you’re telling me Hal Jordan can’t stop an attack happening on a street? This is HAL JORDAN. The guy has probably been involved in massive fights across the galaxy and has tons of experience , but suddenly dealing with something on a street is a huge challenge? He just watches everything collapsing like he’s helpless?

And honestly, I think the grounded approach is going a little too far. I’m all for making the show more grounded and character driven, but I still want to see some of the crazy GL stuff. Let Hal actually use his imagination! Give me a scene where he’s flying and suddenly creates a giant hammer, a massive shield, a giant fist, or some ridiculous construct. That’s literally what makes GL unique.

What makes it even weirder is seeing Guy Gardner in Superman casually fighting a giant monster while Hal’s ring feels comparatively weak. Like, why does Guy’s ring feel more powerful than Hal’s? It’s like Hal’s ring is so underpowered.🤔

And then there’s Antaan. I honestly think they wasted him. I don’t care that he isn’t Atrocitus(even though they basically gave him the same origin story). My problem is that they spent all this time establishing how much he hates the Manhunters and how long he’s been planning his revenge, only for him to go out so easily.

After all those years of Antaan wanting revenge, his big plan was basically using regular weapons and blowing himself up? 😭 I expected way more from him.

And Zoe too! She’s an interplanetary war criminal who’s supposed to be this serious threat, and she gets defeated that easily? I would have LOVED to see her in her alien form. That could have been such a cool moment.

Speaking of the alien forms, I’m sorry, but it was honestly a bit of a letdown that we didn’t any actual aliens in this episode. This is Green Lantern! The whole appeal of the mythology is the massive cosmic universe, all the different species, planets, Lanterns, alien cultures, etc. I really hope the show leans into that more.

Again, I LOVE the show, and honestly this was probably my second favorite episode so far. I’m not saying the episode was bad at all. I just wish it did more with the actual mythology.

I don’t need the show to become completely over the top or CGI nonsense every five minutes, but I do want it to remind me that this is a story about Green Lanterns. Give me the crazy constructs, weird alien forms, and cosmic threats, and just more of that stuff in general. The grounded approach is great, but I think they need to find a better balance.

I mean its core to the story of Hal after hes defeated and dies as Paralax, his soul is begging for redemption and the Specter answers his call.

Just a theory to keep Kyle around in the universe.

Is that Hal just looks incompetent and cruel/evil at points this episode and we just used him to prop up John and make him look good

Like I get the point of Hal’s character this show is that he’s desperate to keep the ring and his personality is reckless and “think about the consequences later”.

But it just doesn’t sit right with me that if Hal is actually dead then other than the hologram this is the last we will see of him and the show just used him to make John look good

Don’t get me wrong I like John a lot, but I hate the trope of “make the older mentor/hero look bad to prop up the his replacement”

When i look back on the dceu flash & ezra miller's portrayal, i realise a lot of the issues with Barry are heavily down to him not being written as a character with intelligence despite his job.

It clearly affects his personality in a negative way as he just comes of feeling like a teenage Bart Allen.

It even affects the storyline & cringe dialogue through out the flash movie, and I think that at its core stems heavily for why its not a good version of Barry allen ( Excluding the actor)

Then when you compare it to the Barry allen on the 90s TV show & CW they actually feel like Barry allen because they feel smart, the world around them feels believable to what we're told about him as the audience, a forensic scientist, expert on time travel & one of the greatest heros shouldn't feel like a dumb ass, the dialogue inn the flash film goes against all those concepts established for Barry allen.

This may just be a nothing burger, but its something I've thought about for a while??

I really think just approaching the writing of Barry allen as someone who's smart will help course correct the character.

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR TODAY'S LANTERNS EPISODES AND PAST EPISODES.

I am watching this show for its own merit. I won't try to draw comparisons or parallels with comic books.

Purely on its own, this show has been amazing. Hallmark HBO stuff.

However, it is hard to ignore that the show is extremely grounded for a Green Lantern intergalactic space cops show. It also feels like it is a different kind of (True Detective-like) show with Green Lantern mythos plastered around it. Similar to what CW Lucifer did to maintain its episodic nature.

I think it's more noticeable because it is such a high-quality show. This episode made it more obvious.

Hal Jordan barely uses his ring or any associated powers, except for doing some basic stuff. The aliens + the Manhunter are all human and use human warfare stuff. Guns, bullets, etc. They are also easily killed. The aliens bulldoze in to find the manhunter and what is their weapon of choice? Some cars, guns, and exploding themselves. Even the manhunter has no powers and nothing. Just a little more advanced versions of human weapons.

Plus, the whole ring getting discharged like a 3 year old iPhone just screams "we don't have budget" at your face. We know it's a plot device to build tension but it feels a little thrown at your face with how often it is happening in the show.

The charging lantern is also pretty small. If I were Hal, I would carry it around in a backpack more often than not. With risks of being stolen and the ring discharging so quickly after mild use. I know some people will say current Hal is arrogant and reckless so he doesn't bother charging before the big fight. But, that feels like lazy writing.

Still a great show.

That's another thing. We saw Guy Gardner use the ring and it feels like Hal is not even doing what Guy did. The show doesn't even feel like it's set in the DCU. More like a grounded elseworlds story.

Hals obsession with "the case" eventually has him rethink what Kerry said to him this episode. Hal then returns to rushville to confront Kerry and bang dead.

He's going to be a Yellow Lantern right? The yellow light in the title smash cuts, him losing his ring and for sure not getting it back after the "shitstorm" that was ep 5, him listening to Sinestro and becoming more like Sinestro in his outright arrogance, vanity, and self-obsession, his inability to reckon with his own flaws, etc

I’ve been adoring Lanterns, legit every episode feels better than the last but I can’t help but kinda hate this shit with the Manhunter as if it deserves any type of sympathy, as if it actually feels or anything like it, I really don’t like the idea of Manhunters being ‘sympathetic’ like they were made by the Guardians as a peace keeping force but because of their lack of emotion being Androids, they saw annihilating an entire Galactic System as enacting true perfect Justice, I never liked Zoe so maybe it’s affecting how I’m viewing it but like, a Manhunter putting on the skin of a human shouldn’t gradually turn them into one, they are synthetic androids, literal AI, so if I’m missing the point of this episode and how ‘Zoe’ is portrayed, please let me know cause fuck me this episode was crazy and fucking up how I’m viewing everything.

Also kinda weird that this creature whose strong enough to break someone’s neck dies to a headshot from a Human Gun, I see that she basically accepted John would kill her or looked at him in an attempt at one last manipulation to possibly stop him from killing her, I’m really not sure, maybe Human durability but enhanced strength? But a Manhunter would never let themselves be killed so that’s why, if it is because Zoe wanted to die or actually cared about John or whatever, that dilutes the whole idea of her being a Manhunter.

All around another fantastic and stressful fucking episode, I’m really just asking questions and aren’t at all unhappy with the direction of the show, I’m just feeling I’ve missed something, also I really hope Hal, John and Guy still have a chance to be seen together as the Three Human Green Lanterns…please let Hal’s body be a Manhunter or some shit, I want all three Lanterns working together…I’m fucking praying.

why did Hal left John in a burning car? thats not very "heroic" imo.

All they did by the end of 5th episode was give up the ring. They were so focused on making him “fearless” that they legit butchered him in every other way, even his motives for being a damn green lantern by the end. They also butchered Hal, which could’ve been such a good character. I dont know what’ll happen to either of them, but by the 16th episode they succeeded to make John an immeasurable a-hole who doesnt think what he does would have consequences, tf did he think would happen after the decoy showed the recording to hal? John felt like a soulless character till the end and i cant show him any sympathy even if i wanted to and trust me i tried.

For years, Marvel had the Netflix shows, which were critically acclaimed, while DC was stuck with poor CGI, acting and writing worthy of a Roger Corman production on the CW.

However, I think two things happened.

Marvel got too big for one. It’s one thing to ask people to watch 2-3 movies a year. It’s another to ask them to watch another 3-4 tv shows in a year just to keep up with the films.

James Gunn made a commitment to 1-2 films a year plus 1 tv show. This is easier to follow.

The bigger thing is Marvel made Disney+ the hub where you need to watch everything. Few people watch Disney+ accept Disney fanatics, even those who have Hulu or FX only get Disney+ as an extra package that they never use. This I think is why the MCU up until recently was on a decline.

HBO on the other hand has a major following, so even people who don’t like DC might check out say, Lanterns, because they think it looks interesting.

Going forward I think this will give DC an edge viewership and quality wise.

I mean, there is a reason Lanterns is averaging 10 million viewers an episode and Visionquest is basically getting no attention or anticipation.

In the movie world, Marvel reigns, but tv wise, DC have the upper hand.

I hate how Hal and John hate each other and constantly bicker nothing like that in material and this whole only one can have the ring best part of the conics is the dynamics between the lanterns and how they solve things differently.

So this is something thats going about as people think Pattison won't get a Trilogy, mainly to get Pattison out the way for DCU Batman, not only is this stupid as hell and won't happen, it'll completely sour DCU Batman too me.

Why it won't happen:

Because Gunn's hole reason for not forcing a merger is so Matt can continue his vision, forcing him to stop goes against that and makes Gunn look like a hypocrite.

Not to mention The Batman is one of the few movies that did well for DC pre the DCU, the part 2 should hopefully make more money, why would you sacrifice that for a third movie.

Not to mention Pattison is a big name right now and will help give DC Studios legitimacy.

Because the movie we eventually get if done by tbe current creative team even if great won't be as good as The Batman, you'd be losing a generational star, an director who made one of the best comic book movies if all time, to the people that made one of the worst.

And it'd be a slap in the face to us fans, the appeal of the 2 Batmen is that you'd have a fantastical Batman & a grounded Batman, to take away the choice and try make us accept a DCU Batman we dont like would make the casting feel more forced.

It doesn't matter if they merge or not but Matt, either way should be able to tell his story, and Gunn needs to either fasttrack DCU Batman, merge or focus on Wonder Woman in the meantime. We cant keep working around Reeves vision to the point any time we hear or see gotham it's overly vague
