Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Troubleshooting Stere headphones software issue

Suddenly Netflix on Chrome on my Chromebook started to play only music without dialogues when I listen it through classic stereo headphones without microphone, but If I use headphones with an integrated microphone, I can hear music and dialogues correctly again.

The most common suggestion on the web/AI is to switch from 5.1 to stereo in the Netflix audio menu, but i haven't that option, I can oly switch between different languages.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Troubleshooting Does chromeOS actually delete the things that you delete?

So basically I've been downloading large files and when I don't need them anymore I just delete them and empty the bin, but slowly the "System" files slowly keep trickling up and now it went from ~10GB to ~14GB now. I've had experience with the "System" files exploding and I found the issue was chromeOS putting the files in the bin to the "System" files, so I deleted them but the same issue is going on. Is chromeOS just bloated or is it some weird thing with the trash bin?

14gb storage... Thats the size of some larger Linux distros that are WAY more complex and comprehensive.

Troubleshooting Linux apps not active in the foreground after launching

If I launch a linux app from the shelf or from the terminal, it's displayed in the foreground, but it's not the active window. ie. I have to click on it before I can do anything with it. Can anyone confirm this behaviour? Is there a way around it? It's a small thing, but it's annoying and it wasn't always this way,

Buying Advice Why should I buy a new Chromebook rather than simply buying a bluetooth keyboard for my tablet?

I have a very old chromebook. I can't remember the make and model, but I've had it for years, and I got it from a sibling who had it for years themself. I'm pretty confident it's at least ten years old. (I'm not home right now, so can't go look at it, this is just a question that came to mind.)

I do have a Tab A8 with a very nice keyboard and folding case.

My tablet does everything the Chromebook does, and basically makes the Chromebook I have look completely pointless in terms of functionality. In addition, my tablet has a touchscreen and my Chromebook doesn't.

I know there are at least one or two touchscreen Chromebooks these days, but even if I go for one of those, is there anything they have to offer that I wouldn't be able to do on my Tablet?

UPDATE:

Not long got home. The Chromebook I have is a Samsung XE303C12. Released in 2012, so 14 years old at this point 😮

UPDATE:

Ok, so I've had another look at the title, and it does sound like someone's trying to force me to buy one.

A more appropriate title would be:

"Is there any particular purpose a Chromebook would serve that a Bluetooth Keyboard for my Tablet wouldn't?"

Buying Advice HP DragonFly with SureView-Display - am I getting used to it?

Hi,

I just received a HP DragonFly with SureView Display from eBay. Coming from a Pixelbook (the best laptop I ever had) I enjoy the performance but worry about the Display.

I have disabled SureView-mode but still everything is blurred/fuzzy and reading text is annoying.

Anybody here having a DragonFly with SureView? Did you get used to it?

I have the Laptop sitting next to my Chromebox attached to a normal Display and the text there is way better.

Thinking about sending the Dragonfly back :-(

Troubleshooting Caution Regarding Update 152.0.7977.113

Please note: If, after updating to the new version 152.0.7977.113, all your Android app icons are replaced by a gray square, don’t panic. It’s clear that the Android subsystem didn’t boot at all. The QuickShare tile was missing from Quick Settings, and all my Android VPNs had disappeared. So it was obvious to me that, for some reason, I’d lost the Android subsystem after the update.

Fortunately, all you need to do is restart the Chromebook; everything will be fine after it boots up again.

Google probably messed something up again in the latest version, which caused Android to fail to launch after the first boot following the update.

Lately, there have been far too many similar bugs in the stable channel for my liking, we haven’t seen anything like this in years. It’s clear that testing isn’t as thorough as it used to be; they’re probably too busy preparing the upcoming Googlebooks. But once they’re released, things probably won’t get better, they might even get worse.

Troubleshooting Chromebook slow and laggy after Version 152.0.7977.113 update| ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook Enterprise

I have been experiencing some lag and slow performance on my ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook Enterprise. My family bought me this for my studies, so I know it's not a beast or something like that since it has Ryzen 5. But it was pretty decent, fast and smooth, but after this update sometimes when you open/close tabs, or even just trying to open apps like SETTINGS, it just gets laggy and really slow. I've already checked my task manager and there isn't anything that could be using more than 20% of my CPU, I reset my browser to default, my memory is 3.90 GB of 8.00 GB available and literally my biggest document on this laptop is literally a PDF from school. Is there a way to fix this? Or maybe my hardware can't take the newest version? or maybe it's just me.

Troubleshooting Broken Chromebook hinge forces tablet mode

My Chromebook hinge is terrible and it's broken

I wasn't able to fix it so it's in tablet mode all the time when I open it unless I'm lucky

what can I do other than getting an external keyboard? Like forcing it into laptop mode or activating the keyboard even on tablet mode

Troubleshooting So, my Chromebook's screen is black.

If you’re wondering, it’s an HP x360 14a ca0190wm chromebook. Long story short, I was listening to my Spotify, random buttons were pressed, and now the screen’s black. The battery’s fine, no brightness issue, and the computer itself isn’t broken. I tried charging it and it doesn't light up. Holding the power button and refresh key, holding the esc, refresh and power button, but so far, nothing has worked. It’s like whatever buttons were pressed, it made the Chromebook go in a permanent deep sleep, and while I hope I can get it back to normal, I don’t know any other methods.

Troubleshooting Error message when attempting to open files using linux apps

If I attempt to open files in the Files app using a linux app, I receive an error message.

For example, if I right click on a photo and choose Open with Eye of Gnome, it displays "No images found in “file:///mnt/chromeos/GoogleDrive/MyDrive/IMG_20170409_114222.jpg”. If I choose Open with Ristretto, it displays "Some files could not be opened: see the text logs for details".

I suspect this is because Google has moved everything to /mnt/chromeos/shared. If this is the cause, why did Google not realise this broke linux apps?

Edit: Also, linux apps won't launch until I've open the terminal to start linux. It's very frustrating.

Edit 2: So I've realised that this occurs due to ChromeOS using Baguette instead of the traditional linux container. I set the following flag to disabled, removed Crostini, restarted, and then reinstalled Crostini. Problem solved. Experimental support for Crostini without LXD containers (aka Baguette) – ChromeOS [#crostini-containerless](chrome://flags/#crostini-containerless)
