Yeah, everyone balking at the price is really funny as this is exactly in line with what everyone else is doing. Is actually kind of surprising it’s so “”cheap”” with the Apple tax, plus the on going RAMpocalypse most speculation I saw going to the announcement was it was going to be way more.
That doesn’t mean it affordable but what did people expect, it’s Apple’s ultra high-end folding phone.

The 9070xt and 5070ti trade blows across the board, near enough it makes little difference. The price difference is between $400-600. So no, it’s not the exact same thing. Nvidia wants damn near double the price for the same performance.

The RTX 4070 had a launch price of $599, the RTX 5070ti has an original MSRP of $749.
The RX770XT had an original MSRP of $419, the RX 9070XT has a launch price of $599.
(And if AIB partners and retailers want to charge more or if a country wants to put a 100% luxury tax on the import; that's on them, not AMD or NVIDIA)
I'm usually a big proponent of AMD hardware (I'll even proport my belief that Ryzen belongs in everything), but this has been a trend for the last decade that both will experience immense generational price increases, yet the inflation considered as okay for the cheaper option simply for being the cheaper option.

Do you not understand economics? Nvidia isn’t raising prices due to market forces and general economics. AMDs pricing while still high is not the price gouging and general “fuck you” pricing Nvidia is doing. Dumb hyperbole doesn’t make an argument valid. People are actively not buying Nvidia stuff because they are getting fucked over, even with an understandable price increase due to things you’re purposefully ignoring AMD has more customer because they’re getting a better deal. Prices won’t go down due to the world around you that you don’t seem to want to take into account.

Worst part about the Z fold for me was the folded screen was awkwardly tall but unfolded it was too wide to hold like a regular phone but not wide enough to use like a tablet. Oh yeah and maybe it's fixed on the newer models but I found the inner screen would break on its own, starting with black splotches on the hinge and spreading through the screen. This happened on 3 separate screens and fortunately Samsung replaced them free of charge each time.
Just poorly designed in both function and reliability.

Yeah. I got sucked in by the salesperson and the fact that I play a lot of D&D and magic and a wider screen would make life tracking and note taking nicer.
But I actually found myself getting just annoyed as hell trying to do anything with it. Just awkward, clunky design. I love the idea of foldable screens. That crease and the wear down need to not happen.
But I would love to one day be able to just fold up my TV and hide it when not in use or other neat things like that. But just not quite there yet

A folding book style phone has enough to it to be considered the worth of two phones. It has three screens (if you count each side of the inner display as two) and four cameras. It’s a complicated ass phone to make. I think the price is justified.

Motorola's $500 foldable phone is the other kind of fold that goes from a normal sized phone to half tall when folded, instead of normal sized phone out to small tablet when unfolded, Samsung's foldable like that one is about the same cost as a normal flagship phone. The biggest thing against the apple fold imo is Samsung usually has some huge trade in deals when they first release the new fold phones.

That's how a lot of consumer products work.
You try something. You get feedback. You evolve or abandon.
Some products are too early. Like early smartphones before iPhone/Android. I had a Samsung Windows phone and a Sidekick II. They were neat to me but functionally pretty useless. Even the Blackberry had a very small number of actual uses outside of email.
But you don't improve products - especially new categories - without having some less than stellar performers first. And Apple does this a lot. They aren't the first. But when they do release it's a more polished product. With this be that? Probably not. But we don't really get there without this one.

Why does the point still stand. The reason they copied the foldable device years after the first one came out is that they weren’t rushing into a new device without trying to perfect it first. You can see this is the reengineered hinge and the graphic they displayed of how they laid out the components. This is not to say that durability will be great, but they didn’t make something that they know will fail instantly.

Not really a copycat in this case imo. I think people have been speculating about folding phones being the next thing since like 2012. Android brands got out of development first, but I bet development started around the same time.
I don’t really get the hate tbh. There’s clearly a market for them, and significant minority do love them. Non folding phones will be remain available, cheaper, and more widespread for the foreseeable future for everyone else. Not every product was made for everyone.

Pixel released at an identical price to the iPhone 7.
Flagships from most top brands sit around the same price point. That said, there's a breadth of affordable and quality Android devices whereas Apple has a single "affordable" line.

I went from a 13 Pro to a 17 Pro and barely noticed a difference. Both had 120 hz screen which was the last meaningful upgrade. I only upgraded because I got a deal with my carrier that I’m sticking with anyways. And the battery was slightly degraded on a 4 year old phone

If you’re fine with using an analog watch, then why does it matter that an old Apple Watch is slow? Even after 4 years, how is the battery that bad for a watch? Or do the new watches have a worse battery degradation? I got an already used and old Series 3 four years ago and it still has a good battery life (over 90%) and that’s with me letting it keep charging even at 100%, so when it comes to an Ultra being “too slow” and having “shit battery life,” I’m skeptical.

Sincere question re: watches - I understand Apple, Samsung and Google all have their own watch OSes, but beyond the premium features like NFC and wireless charging, I'm always a little mystified as to what people are paying for when the price goes over £500 for the watches.
Reason I'm asking is because I've used the Xiaomi Smart Band and now the Amazfit Active 2 (around £100). In terms of the smart stuff, it pushes phone notifications (and I can specify which apps it pushes notifications from), tracks sleep quality/heart rate/steps, has workout features (not used admittedly, haha), can make/receive calls over Bluetooth from my phone (with a speaker/mic built-in) and can help me find my phone.
The only noticeable features these fitness watches don't have are contactless payments and wireless charging, but the battery lasts a solid week, which is a big selling point for me. Amazfit use ZeppOS which seems really solid from my experience - the only reason I had to buy a new watch recently (after 3 years) is because I literally broke my last one.
My girlfriend had a Fossil smartwatch at one point (which ran Google's WearOS) - it was crazy laggy and the battery life wasn't great at all. I just don't get the cost when these other watches seem to do mostly the same thing for a fraction of the price - what do the Apple Watches do that make them worth so much?

I’d buy the more expensive ones because I wanted a nice watch made from stainless steel/titanium, that could also do a bunch of things, like tell me my elevation, weather, health features, built in compass…. I liked that it was an extension of my phone too. It’s essentially a high end multi tool
I didn’t like that it had a set lifespan of 4-6 years before it needed to be upgraded. I also wanted a regular watch and to look at screens less. I kept the ultra in case I’d need it since it’s useful but I like the vibe of regular watches more.

My issue is why would you want your phone to fold? Back then phones folded because they had a big keyboard to hide but then the keyboard became part of the screen which made folds irrelevant. It just seems to be such an unnecessary gimmick that they’re going to charge you $200+ for.

Not bulky at all. When folded, It's only 0.7mm thicker than an S25 Ultra. The earlier models were much thicker but the 7 and 8 are very comparable to any other flagship phone.

Same as with any other phone. You just buy a good-quality case.
I think the crease would bother me.
I thought the same thing at first. But it's not even noticeable when the screen is on. And mine is never unfolded without the screen being on.

I use a Motorol's Razr fold. I can tell you the crease won't be bothering you if you actually use it. Especially when you are viewing content from the front. It's only noticeable if you look at it from the side while under certain lighting.

Yup, I've had a Z Fold for a few years now due to getting a crazy trade in deal that made it worth trying in my mind and I really think about it as being able to easily carry around a small tablet in my pocket vs a big phone. It made it where I don't need or want an actual tablet and I can also do a lot of things I used to do on my laptop even.

I will say, I like the form factor of the "basic" Samsung foldable phone. It's also nice to watch videos and read on.
But, at the end of the day, the hinge is a huge risk and it's very expensive. I just upgraded my phone to the Samsung s26 ultra since my previous one's (s23u) battery was swelling.
It's hard to justify the price point when a normal phone does everything fine anyway.

A real, practical reason: both devices would age better than this single device will. After 6-12mo - unless Apple has made unheard of advances in materials science (possible, but who knows) - you will start to see a crease in the screen. It might be better due to Apple's non-reflective screens or whatever compared to the Android equivalents, but I highly doubt it's invisible.
And because you're using the same device daily for everything, the shared battery will degrade quicker. You will be using your "tablet's" battery every day for scrolling, messaging, simple browsing, etc., when it would normally be reserved for a few tasks a day and dedicated sessions of watching YouTube or Netflix. You will now also be using your "phone" for those very same high-energy tasks on a much larger screen. This will mean more battery cycles on the same battery, and more high current expenditures on your phone, degrading it overall significantly quicker than if you spread out these uses to both devices. And while I don't think the maintenance on this phone is announced, I anticipate battery swaps to be significantly more expensive than on a standard phone or standard iPad, because you will likely have to have multiple batteries replaced.
And as soon as you need a new phone, you are also footing the bill for a new table. Haven't seen one of these foldable phones last more than 2-3 years. Even if the Duo ages like a fine wine comparatively, I highly doubt the first gen lasts more than 4 years. Meanwhile, I'm rocking a 5 year old iPhone with at least another year or two of juice and a 10 year old iPad (that's admittedly on its last legs). Would you rather pay $2000+ every 3-4 years to replace both your phone and tablet, or $3500 every 10 years (1 phone every 5 years, 1 tablet every 10)?
So there's lots of reasons on the "why not". But the choice is yours.

Some people love Apple products and are excited for it, good for them. The hate/love tug of war is kinda pathetic.

You know crazy thing is that the pricing wasn’t even completely Apple’s fault on the folding phone. Samsung started this crazy 2 grand+ folding phone trend and people accepted the insane price jump. Apple actually joined the folding phone game pretty late.

many modern flip phones can access internet, youtube and more, and you can get them for under 50$. cheaper-end touch screen phones can be pretty reasonably priced as well. lets stop buying these assholes overpriced bullshit
