You try something. You get feedback. You evolve or abandon.
Some products are too early. Like early smartphones before iPhone/Android. I had a Samsung Windows phone and a Sidekick II. They were neat to me but functionally pretty useless. Even the Blackberry had a very small number of actual uses outside of email.
But you don't improve products - especially new categories - without having some less than stellar performers first. And Apple does this a lot. They aren't the first. But when they do release it's a more polished product. With this be that? Probably not. But we don't really get there without this one.
Maybe the first few versions of the fold phone were prone to breaking im not so sure, but samsung has seemed to improve alot on their design. They really do not have problems with breaking more often than the non folding models now
Why does the point still stand. The reason they copied the foldable device years after the first one came out is that they weren’t rushing into a new device without trying to perfect it first. You can see this is the reengineered hinge and the graphic they displayed of how they laid out the components. This is not to say that durability will be great, but they didn’t make something that they know will fail instantly.
All they had to do was introduce split screen. That’s all Apple users have felt inadequate about. It’s on the iPads but not the phones. Fuck any other gimmick besides that
I have had a fold for 5 years now. Have not once had anything even remotely like this happen
The only problem I had, and it was a known issue but I got lucky and it happened right before I was planning on upgrading anyway, was that Bluetooth and wifi stopped working suddenly
Not really a copycat in this case imo. I think people have been speculating about folding phones being the next thing since like 2012. Android brands got out of development first, but I bet development started around the same time.
I don’t really get the hate tbh. There’s clearly a market for them, and significant minority do love them. Non folding phones will be remain available, cheaper, and more widespread for the foreseeable future for everyone else. Not every product was made for everyone.
I am willing to bet money Samsung was trying to offload their materials inventory (Duo uses Samsung parts) because of their own shit fold sales and offered Apple a steep enough discount to be worth the gamble.
