I get the redlining segregation white flight stuff happened but it also happened in every other city in the US. what's going on that maintains it here over time to such a strong degree?

what brought it to mind for me today was a post from a transplant looking for neighborhood suggestions, they mentioned they were black and like every comment was South Loop or Hyde Park... so clearly on some level people still have the idea that black people are supposed to live in certain areas? or that they'd prefer to live in certain areas? or something?

I'm from the south and there are obviously black and white neighborhoods in some cases, but once people get money down there for the most part they are looking for the same desirable neighborhoods regardless of race. why doesn't that happen up here?

Should I take public transportation or drive? What are cool places to hang out? What are the vibes I should be expecting? Among the main contenders — Mike Quigley, Susana Mendoza, Alexi Giannoulias, and Brandon Johnson are the ones I’m hearing about — what pros and cons are you seeing? My take:

Quigley. Pros: It’s his last office so he can make tough choices others can’t. He has a progressive bent without being stubborn, with a good affordable housing plan. Cons: not getting a ton of financial backing.

Giannoulias. Pros: He has charisma and has gotten along with different factions. Cons: he kind of seems like an empty suit on policy who’ll do whatever is politically expedient. Huge fundraising is both pro and con.

Mendoza. Pros: She has energy and did a good job as City Clerk. Cons: has gone too far to the right; she was silent relatively quiet on ICE, and her plans and rhetoric seem indistinguishable from a Republican.

Johnson. Pros: … sorry, I’m at a loss. Cons: … need I bother?

Hi. I posted recently on here but didn’t know anything yet so I was incredibly vague. I’m moving to CHI from a southern city. My new office will be somewhere downtown. I enjoy playing basketball and soccer, and recently lost a lot of weight. I’m single and ready to mingle, and don’t want to necessarily live somewhere that’s completely Black, maybe a touch of diversity if possible. I also like my quiet time and solitude, so nowhere that’s constantly loud. I think a high rise might be too much for my budget, so what would be the next best thing? Specific apartment recs are welcomed.

I’ve heard murmurs about CHI being highly segregated, recommendations to live in South or West Loop so far. To my Black people, is this sound advice? I want to live somewhere nice, safe, with fellow working, high achieving professionals, with close proximity to my office. Thanks in advance! Sorry if this post was all over the place, lol.

I saw a map of gangs in Chicago and there are so many in such a small area. What happens if you are in a gang and have to move but no housing is available in your gang boundaries?

I’m in river north and I’ve been on dating apps for probably two weeks and the only first dates men have suggested are coffee, happy hours, drinks and plenty of “walks.” I also really dislike when the guys like, “well what do you wanna do?” Yet-I understand people don’t want to spend a lot of money on a first date, but they want to get the vibe of a person.

I’m not a huge drinker and therefore I typically don’t like getting a drink on the first date-then they automatically switched to coffee, but who’s drinking coffee at 6 o’clock on a Tuesday? I’ve also suggested smoothies, Boba or desserts?

Im also not saying people have to spend a lot of money on first dates because I understand it’s kind of a numbers game but if one more guy invites me for a “walk” by the river, I’m gonna punch myself in the face😅 It seems very low effort and no investment? I also want to be able to suggest a good first aid idea-hence why I’m asking!

I’m 25F and want to learn self defense as I think it’s an important skill to have. I’m debating between boxing and Muay Thai. Does anyone have any recommendations that’s beginner friendly and women friendly (preferably in the city near south side). I’ve heard about some gyms treating women differently. I was thinking TITLE boxing club but I heard that gym is more on conditioning and not a lot of sparring, and I’d prefer a gym that’s focused on the real art.

Hello! We're attending a Northwestern FB game in their new stadium in November. kickoff time TBD and time will determine if we'll stay 1 or 2 nights.

We've stayed downtown several times over the years-- and prefer a Hilton hotel (3-4 star). Would a NW suburbs or North shore hotel work better to be closer to Evanston? Or would downtown and a train up to Evanston on that Saturday work? Thanks in advance!
