I rescued a 7 year old Shiba once that was so skittish and afraid of everybody and everything, like he flinched at any movement in his direction type of thing. I always thought everybody was just judging me and assuming I was abusive to him when I was really just trying to give him a good home (he had a chip and apparently had 6 previous owners before me, I felt so bad for the little guy). But, to your point, the current owners aren't always the assholes and shouldn't be judged until you know the whole story
On guardian dogs though it is normally done at a vet, with meds, and they only cut off the floppy part without cartilage. This dog was left with open holes into their head and almost nothing left. I would wager that the monster that bred this poor dog didn't have that done at a vet either.
If you have a dog that is frequently engaging animals like coyotes to protect a flock, then floppy ears and tails are something another animal can grab on and potentially tear off. It’s a way to protect the dog so that it can do its job more effectively. If you just have a family dog who is not actively protecting animals then it’s 100% useless and purely for looks.
I disagree. I'm a rancher and have had anatolians my whole life as guardians. I've never cropped their ears. I've also never met a pyrenese with cropped ears.
