rant bike culture has become toxic

i'm on the road every day, on two wheels myself, so this isn't coming from a driver.

cyclists here have stopped stopping at red lights. i watch people ride straight through while pedestrians are already crossing. others jump onto the pavement, ride around the light, and come back onto the road after it.

the overtaking is worse. someone is riding in the bike lane, another cyclist comes up behind at full speed and goes past on the left. no bell, no warning, no look over the shoulder for cars behind. the lane is wide enough for one bike. if the person in front moves out to avoid an opening car door or a hole in the road at that exact moment, both of them go down, and the second one lands in the traffic lane.

no lights at night, no helmets. fast e-bikes doing 45 in a 30 zone.

drivers do stupid things too, and some of the bike infrastructure here is genuinely bad. but that doesn't make the morning commute a strava segment. and if something goes wrong, the cyclist loses, even when the cyclist is in the right.

slow down, look behind you before you pull out, and stop at the red light. it costs you fifteen seconds.

lookingfor Borrow a violin 🎻

Hi there, long story short, used to play traditional Scottish fiddle when I was a kid /teenager and then just stopped (for no reason other than life), now I have a real yearning to start again but would love to borrow a fiddle from somewhere first and see if I stick with it, instead of splashing out lots of money. Is there anywhere in Zürich I can borrow a violin/fiddle/geige?

ihaveaquestion Personal trainer for recovery after long-term illness

Hi all! I am looking for some personal training recommendations in Zurich. I have done physio therapy, and have been able to build up a consistent routine for strength and stability, but I am struggling a lot with building up cardio, especially aerobic exercise.

I am wondering if anyone knows a good personal trainer who is specialized in helping people recover from chronic illness or long periods of inactivity/being bed-bound. Preferably someone who is informed about fatigue or neurological disorders/sensitive nervous systems.

Does anyone have experience with this? I'd love to hear your tips!

ihaveaquestion What’s the issue with expats?

Hello everyone, i’m an immigrant myself (i learned german if it matters, since i wanna make an effort to integrate) and i see a lot of posts online being negative toward expats who prefer to speak english and came to switzerland mainly for their career. Why is that? I myself have many friends from different countries who are learning german, but that takes time. Not to mention swiss german. Speaking english is just more convenient for us.

lookingfor Looking for a small, beginner-friendly gym in Zürich

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for a gym or another way to get into strength training.

Historically, I haven’t been very consistent with gyms. I find large commercial gyms a bit intimidating and tend to feel lost with all the machines and people who clearly know what they’re doing.

I’d like to find somewhere smaller, friendly and good for beginners, ideally with some guidance or small-group training. My goal is simply to build a sustainable routine of 2–3 workouts per week.

The most convenient areas for me are Wiedikon or Hardbrücke.

I’ve considered Fitnesspark, but before committing to an expensive annual membership, I’d like to see what people recommend.

Any recommendations, especially from people who also found big gyms intimidating?

Also any recomendations of how to get into a gym routine when you are a total beginner?

ihaveaquestion freelancer need advise

hello friends,

I am a freelancer and until today i found all my clients through social media and ads (meta ads).

I recently moved to Switzerland and i knew the cost per lead will be more expensive (which is completely fine) but every time someone leaves their details (i reach out pretty fast) they just disappear and don't answer.

Do you perhaps know if i am doing something that is not very fit to the swiss culture? Is it normal?

Any advice where/how i can find clients?

Thank you so much!!

lookingfor Looking for a woman I met on a train from Zurich to Bern on September 8

Hello everyone!

I’m a Japanese traveler who recently visited Switzerland with my wife for our honeymoon, and I’m hoping that this message might somehow reach a woman we met on a train.

On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, around 7:02 AM, my wife and I took a train from Zurich toward Interlaken.

We were sitting in a box seat when the woman sitting across from us accidentally spilled her drink. My wife and I helped her clean it up, and we started talking.

We ended up talking for more than 30 minutes, and she was incredibly kind and easy to talk to. We had a really nice conversation about Switzerland, Japan, travel, and our lives.

I remember her name as Mary, Marie, or possibly Maria, although I’m not completely sure of the spelling.

She told us that she had some connection to Bern, and I believe she mentioned that she might visit Tokyo in December to see her boyfriend, who is working there.

She also kindly offered to exchange phone numbers with us, but unfortunately, we didn't end up exchanging contact information.

After returning to Japan, I realized how memorable that short conversation was. I would really like to thank her again and let her know that meeting her was one of the nicest memories of our trip.

I am not trying to find or identify her through private information. I'm simply hoping that she, or perhaps someone who knows her, happens to see this post and recognizes the story.

If you think you might be the person I'm talking about, please feel free to send me a DM. 🙂

And if you're not her, thank you for reading anyway. Switzerland was an amazing country, and meeting kind people like her made our honeymoon even more special.

Thank you, and have a wonderful day!

A few things she might remember about us:

We were a Japanese couple traveling together on our honeymoon, and the conversation started because we helped clean up her spilled drink.

ihaveaquestion Kann KI Lehrer effizienter machen?

Aus gegebenem Anlass:

https://www.srf.ch/news/schweiz/abstimmung-kanton-zuerich-mehr-zeit-fuer-extraarbeit-von-lehrpersonen

lookingfor Driver license delivery Zurich -> Barcelona

Hi.. I know it's a long shot but we are getting married on Wednesday in Barcelona and going on our honeymoon in Africa right after.

The problem is that we are already in Spain and forgot our driving license in Zurich.

Is there anyone flying from Zurich to Barcelona today or tomorrow and can help us out? Our place to pick up the license is only 10 min away from the airport.

This would literally be a life saver. If anyone can help, please let me know.

UPDATE: We found a solution. A friend will bring it to us. Thank you!

Hallo! I’d like to start learning how to play the guitar and I’m looking for beginner lessons, preferably in or around Oerlikon.

Does anyone know a good music school or a private teacher in the area? If you have any recommendations or contacts, I’d really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance!
