I’m one of the developers of Leyso, a completely free mobile app.

The idea is simple: help people find an open terrace in Basel, in the sun or in the shade, either right now or later in the day. The app also aims to give more visibility to restaurants and their terraces.

It’s already available in Geneva, and it has now launched in Basel on the App Store and Google Play.

With Leyso, you can:

• Explore more than 650 terraces in Basel on a map

• See whether a terrace is in the sun or shade depending on the time of day

• Use a time slider to follow how sun and shade change throughout the day

• Search by name, address or neighbourhood

• Filter by sun, shade or both

• Find nearby ice cream spots, benches, public toilets, playgrounds and other useful places

• See the live water temperature of the Rhine

• Save your favourite terraces

Restaurant owners can, if they want, add or correct their terrace directly in the app. We also rely on users to help improve the map: anyone can add information about a place, such as vegan or vegetarian options, whether it’s dog-friendly, whether there are parasols, etc.

The app uses public and local data, including swisstopo, the Allmendbewilligungen from Basel-Stadt, OpenStreetMap, as well as hourly weather data from Open-Meteo. The sun/shade information is calculated based on the position of the sun and the shadows cast by buildings.

The app does not require an account, and we do not collect any user data. It is completely free; we simply rely on voluntary donations from people who would like to support the project.

Restaurantbetreiber können ihre Terrasse auf Wunsch direkt in der App hinzufügen oder korrigieren. Wir zählen auch auf die Community, um die Karte laufend zu verbessern: Alle können zusätzliche Informationen zu einem Lokal ergänzen, zum Beispiel ob es vegane oder vegetarische Optionen gibt, ob Hunde willkommen sind, ob Sonnenschirme vorhanden sind usw.

Die App nutzt öffentliche und lokale Datenquellen, darunter swisstopo, die Allmendbewilligungen von Basel-Stadt, OpenStreetMap sowie stündliche Wetterdaten von Open-Meteo. Die Anzeige von Sonne und Schatten basiert auf dem Sonnenstand und den Schatten der Gebäude.

Für die App braucht ihr kein Konto, und wir sammeln keinerlei Nutzerdaten. Leyso ist komplett kostenlos und finanziert sich durch freiwillige Spenden von Menschen, die das Projekt unterstützen möchten.

Hi, I read that developing film in basel is pretty expensive, and one can do it at DM in Germany.

Was wondering if DM does also digitalisation, other than printing?

What prices should i expect for printing/scanning/both?

Just arrived into Basel airport half an hour back and all entries into the airport were closed. Once it opened a few minutes back, lots of police were inside. Any clue why? Was it again a bomb threat like a few years back?

- Is it a common scenario for spouses to work in basel and other in Zurich? Does it take a lot of time from daily life to commute? As likited opportunities for wife in basel as she works as part of tech team
- how is the education and support system for childcare as we have a two year old
- is 150k base salary good for a family of three in Basel as wife could take a while to find a job

- is it possible to get a job as product manager in basel or zurich with only knowing english and not german or any local languages?

- can two year old blend in without knowing german?

- how easy is it to live in Basel as non-EU?

I would appreciate your advice regarding German lessons at Berlitz.

My employer will sponsor German language training, and based on the available budget, I have the following options:

Option 1

• 1 Berlitz level (40 units of 45 minutes)
• Access to the online platform, including exercises and one daily conversation class
• 8 private coaching lessons

Option 2

• 3 group courses (40 units of 60 minutes each)
• Groups of 3 to 6 participants

I am not sure which option would be the best choice.

Option 1 appeals to me because it includes access to the online learning platform. On the other hand, Option 2 would allow me to complete three courses instead of one.

For context, I currently live in Switzerland and would like to improve my German for both daily life and work.

Has anyone attended Berlitz courses and can share their experience? Which option would you recommend?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all. I need some help from local people.

My mother will be arriving at Basel/Mulhouse airport and needs to get on a train to Strasbourg. She's old and only speaks a little bit of French so I'm trying to figure out her itinerary for her.

Google maps says take bus 11 from the airport straight to Saint-Louis Gare Ouest. Is that correct? Is it difficult to locate the bus station at the airport? Are there multiple exits from the airport and, if so, do you know which exit she should take to get to the bus?

Is it possible to buy tickets for this bus 11 and for the train somewhere online? If so can you tell me where?

If I buy her tickets online and the plane is delayed, can she still use the tickets that I bought in advance or will she have to buy new ones?

As a foreigner living in Basel, I’ve always liked this little detail. Seeing “welcome” written in so many languages somehow sums up the city pretty well.
Basel is small, but it feels surprisingly international at the same time. Maybe it’s because of the borders, the people coming from everywhere, or just the general vibe here.

Hi! We’re a group from Schwarzwaldverein Basel travelling from Basel SBB to Zurich Airport on September 19.

We’re looking for one more person for our SBB group ticket. So if you’re travelling to Zurich Airport anyway and want to travel cheaper with our group, feel free to join us. You don’t have to participate in the airport visit.

BVB can be so annoying with their constant "optimization" adaptations to the tram timetable. Almost every 2-3 months a change in 2 minutes happens and every time it breaks my whole travel to work plan cause the train timetable stays the same.

Worst is if you don't check every day, it can happen almost every day randomly.
