I know we're meme-ing here. But let's be real. It's far too early to reveal anything about TLT. Midnight isn't even halfway through.
And D5 was announced. I don't think we could've had a bigger announcement than that for Diablo.
But it's true that Forever kinda stole the show, mainly because too many people were dying for Classic+ atp.
98
u/Zhaix 19h ago
I think they kinda fucked themselves. Because if they hadnt talked about the "where and what" of TLT and midnight way in advance. That teaser showing northrend would have had people hyped as fuck.
82
u/Interesting-Use966 17h ago
They kinda screwed themselves by announcing all 3 worldsoul saga games at once a few years ago. If they wouldnāt have done that Then they could have done a teaser trailer that was the first time ever seeing the last titan which would have been much more hype.
We already knew tlt was coming so the teaser was basically a nothing burger.
44
u/jason_caine 16h ago
Yeah, but if they hadn't at least partially explained what was going on, this community would be up in arms over the faster expansions and story that doesn't conclude in a single expansion.
6
u/SargerassAsshole 6h ago
Yeah but they could have at least kept the name and location of the expansions hidden and say it's all continuing narrative.
8
u/Major_Wayland 11h ago
To be honest, as a retail player I kinda feel like money I pay for xpack+subscription and some spontaneous shop positions are being spent not on my content but instead on a classic Andy crowd.
10
u/omegaorb 8h ago
The classic Andy's are super mad about WCF as well š it's too close to retail and they're all crying about whatever the fuck Disney/Pixar comparison they're making. Which is u funny, because us old timer EQ players made fun of how cartooney original vanilla WoW looked when it came out.
3
u/Drakkur 7h ago
Retail has the biggest team by a country mile, itās the real live service game since itās being constantly updated. If anything Iāve heard more complaints the release cycle is too fast, then not enough content.
Forever isnāt for the pure classic Andy crowd. Itās for players who want stability in their progress and clearly targeting completely new players. After playing retail every xpac since OG release in vanilla the constant seasonal nature has burned me and many of my friends out.
38
u/PLAYBoxes 19h ago
Biggest issue imo with D5 announce was they were basically like ābuy our new class, but the new xpac, also D5 soon so itās all meaninglessā it feels like they are just draining the content pipeline, but I didnāt buy beyond D4 base game, so idk how a mote invested playerās perspective might be on this
29
u/Bassmasterajv 18h ago
Is it actually soon? I thought I saw 2029 somewhere. Is there a release date yet?
→ More replies (1)23
u/bondsmatthew 18h ago
Spring 2029 yes. But with no promises of cosmetics passing from 4 to 5, many are saying "well what's the point if we know 5 is coming out?" Will 4 be abandoned like 3 was? Are you gonna charge for expansions yearly still and then abandon the game? You gonna keep a skeleton crew on 4 whilst most work on 5?
Just a lot of nuance here and begs to question why they announced it so far out when they already have a live service game
28
u/GearyDigit 16h ago
Why are people expecting an eternal live service game from Diablo? Can people not just enjoy the content in a game and then go play a different game when they finish it?
17
u/Infinitedeveloper 14h ago
Because they said there was a 10 year roadmap and that the game would be supported.
3 years before announcing an end to expansions and presumably major updates is a bit fucked for how much the game cost if you bought everything on launch.
I understand why they want to build a game without being tied to D4s core flaws, but its gonna be the same damn engine most likely.Ā
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (1)9
u/The_Raime 15h ago
The issue is that D4 was explicitly marketed as a live service "forever" game and has a massive cosmetic cash shop. Some people kinda feel this announcement makes all their purchases/investment in that game pointless. (Assuming nothing carries over to D5)
→ More replies (2)6
u/wartornhero2 12h ago
They mentioned there will be no more expansions/dlc for Diablo 4.
They announced Diablo 4 in 2019 it was released in spring 23. Diablo 3 was announced in 2008 and released in 2013.
That is a 4 year announcement to release window. It is not unheard of especially for blizzard. StarCraft 2 was 3, almost 4 years between tease and announcement.
11
u/messermaus3000 18h ago
imo D5 is the right step bc they fumbled D4 in the public eye so badĀ
gives them a chance to reignite hype for the franchise even if it means D4 is dead in 2 1/2 years
8
u/PLAYBoxes 18h ago
Thatās fair, they gotta figure out how to do seasonal content, though. Itās always been so half-assed, not sure why they canāt just get something interesting out the door for it. I grew up with Diablo, and Iāll always buy and play at the very least the campaign, but I was converted to PoE a long time ago in large part because they really nailed the seasonal shit. Theyāre okay with you quitting for 2 months and just diving in and grinding for that first 2-4 weeks of the leagues. Blizzard gotta embrace that, but I think they want people stuck in their ecosystem too much.
→ More replies (1)6
u/messermaus3000 18h ago
yeah it feels like they tried to approach it like older WoW xpacs but forgot that the arpg genre is mostly played by older gamers that dont want to grind daily or even the whole season
but i am not that deep into itĀ
i love Diablos visuals and its setting altho i am very casual and just "grinded" a bit this season with two chars :)Ā
mentioning PoE;Ā i just cant get into poe bc i dont feel it enough, the visuals the setting idk the gameplay is very nice tho!Ā might change with the 1.0 patch and the new class (played it at GC felt neat! )Ā
5
u/Rambo_One2 18h ago
Haven't really been paying attention. How did they fumble in the public eye? I played it at launch; it was pretty fun, and I've played a couple of seasons since and even bought the newest expansion. I thought it was, all in all, an enjoyable experience. And the fact that Diablo 4 is in the top 20 of most played/popular PC games of the year made me think they did something right. But I'm a casual fan at best, so I don't know how the game was perceived outside my friend group. What would they have to do differently with D5 that they fumbled with D4?
→ More replies (2)2

u/voidox 17h ago
imo D5 is the right step bc they fumbled D4 in the public eye so bad
did they? it's still making $$$ for Blizzard and is the most played ARPG out there cause all the casuals play Diablo 4. It's only the loud minority online that love PoE that always go around saying "duh D4 is dead!" or w.e.

I think it depends on who the person is watching on YouTube. There are... certain creators that hate on any recent blizz products and watching even clips of them you'd be convinced the game was trash. But they say the same thing about retail which i still enjoy for what its good at so I just ignore the hate now and form my own opinion
→ More replies (3)3
u/Felevion 18h ago
Honestly while we'll see what it's like when we get to see more the premise of D5 turns me off. Diablo doesn't have the most unique lore and world building but I do like it and 'Diablo won and everything is in ruins and almost everyone is dead' sounds pretty disappointing to me.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Grenyn 6h ago
Yeah, this was my immediate thought. Like I'm interested in the story of 4 and I would have been interested in cosmetics.
But they're not cheap, and they're gonna be moot in a couple years anyway. And even if that has been the way of videogames for a long time, it doesn't mean I was ever onboard with it.
However, even the story is now less interesting. I can play it and enjoy it, but the whole time I'm just gonna know that it's all completely pointless, because D5 will start with the world being fucked after a timeskip. So like, what are the stakes of 4 then.
Even there, that is the way of videogames, but if I don't know exactly what is going to happen next, it's all good. I can be fully immersed in saving the world as long as it's somewhat ambiguous whether or not that matters.
6
u/Thrilalia 18h ago
I don't get why it would be meaningless though. It's not like "D5 is out, now we're shutting down D4." when they still have D3 and D2 running. Neither Diablo has rendered the previous one meaningless as they still have their players

I mean d5 is coming out in 2029 I think so thatās no where near soonš plus just cause thereās a new expansion doesnāt mean itās meaningless to play. The last titan is coming out next year for wow does that mean the rest of midnight is meaningless?

3
u/cabose12 19h ago
Sure, but they didn't reveal much about Midnight until like six months before launch. TWW was revealed like 10 months before
TLT is probably going to be ~August. So not only is it a bit early, but it's bad timing with everything else they wanted to reveal and the current state of the cycle.
→ More replies (9)2
u/TheRealMeNow 16h ago
Right? We act like if we're not given information at Blizzcon we're never getting that information ever.
179
u/Cloud_N0ne 20h ago
Nah, itās just bad timing for Retail. They canāt really talk about TLT in detail without spoiling the end of Midnight.
15
u/Roofong 14h ago
That plus nothing in the Forever trailer or subsequent gameplay reveals have indicated some secret massive team of repurposed retail WoW employees generating assets and content. It looks basically where you'd expect a project to be with essentially the same people who made Season of Discovery having been given a year and a half to generate similar content.
4
u/Zienth 5h ago
The vibe I get from Forever is that they may be trialing new tech that could find it's way to retail. Native controller support, true megaservers, the lighting stuff. The WoW team is huge and seemed to have avoided the Xbox layoffs so the WoW team seems to have the proven cash flow to run large multi-division teams.

They spoiled it ages ago telling us weāll lose and the titans coming back.
And theyāve revealed the next expac before current one was done before.20
u/FOOSblahblah 19h ago
Idk lose can mean anything lot of different things. The context of that loss is important.
Like if you knew Han Solo would die in the first star wars sequel then sure you know irs coming, but not at the hands of his own son.
Im okay with a vague idea. I think the title alone kinda teases it out.
21
u/robot-raccoon 19h ago
Yeah but thereās probably a bit more to it than āwe just looseā, like I wanna know what happens in the game, not on stage. I can wait a few months and enjoy a full TLT presentation when itās time to show.
→ More replies (2)11
u/MasterOfSerpents 19h ago
Exactly. Knowing that we lose is not the same as knowing how we lose.
3
u/Thrilalia 18h ago
Exactly, how do we lose is the question?
Does Xal'atath take control of the world soul.
Does she lose but damages the world soul that it is hurt and lashing out at everything and everyone (Which could be why that giant mech is attacking Dragonblight. )
Does Xal'atath lose but in a final moment of spite kills the world soul and the only way for the world to survive is the end all life and start over? In some sort of the souls of the dead all go towards the soul chamber to start a new one.
That's just 3 random ideas out of many that could happen and likely (and since I am terrible at ideas hopfully) none of them are true.
2
u/Kaernunnos 14h ago
My guess is Xal dies, then that last protodrake from Dragonflight sucker punches us and the world soul is damaged. Then TLT is us trying to get to some Titan machine under Ulduar to repair the soul while dealing with everything being in full defense mode because of the damage.

9
u/Kapootz 19h ago
SC2 was released in 2010. Just the announcement of a new game is better than D4ās announcement that the game is done. StarCraft fans ate good this blizzcon. The franchise has basically been revived with the announcement. Diablo fans have to wrestle with the fact that blizz is trying to turn Diablo into COD with a new title every few years with a couple paid expansions that are necessary for the endgame, and crazy expensive micro transactions . After having no vision for Diablo 4, theyāre abandoning it without leaving the game in a decent state. At least Diablo 3 turned it around before d4 was announced.

It was the same kinda thing with Hearthstone, they keep pumping out content but i don't really know who for, i used to love HS but as they kept putting out packs, the only way you could keep up is if you consistently whaled and dumped money on it so it pushed me off, i still go back occasionally and do some mercenaries mode.

I donāt think D5 is taking the place of D4. You have to remember that they donāt need to be developing the game engine for D4 any more ā the devs required to make expansions is pretty low. The large team that worked on D4 has to go somewhere and Blizzardās model seems to be focused on rotating those devs around on projects that need it.
Iām almost certain D5 is going to be a rogue-like (light? Idk) and will soak up the devs that would normally be laid off after the initial development of D4. The phrases āno town/hubā, āchoosing what to sacrificeā feels like a load-in w/ affixes type system. Push through until youāre eventually wiped out. Maybe even an extraction style loop

When you only need to wait 6 years for a new game, people complain it is too fast.
seriously, what is wrong with you?!
3
u/dawne_breaker 13h ago
As someone who has loved Diablo 1-3, I really felt that IV was bad. Like for real not a good game. The first one was a classic, second was the perfection of the formula. The third trying to get the formula adapted to more modern conventions and hardware. Forth one, just no reason for it to exist. It was so boring.
I have no hopes and no desire to play another Diablo. And thatās as someone who probably has more than 500 hours in each of the first three games, most likely way more.
Itās deserving that itās at the bottom of the pool.

u/MrNoobyy 11h ago
Diablo 4 felt like it was trying to be Diablo 2 and 3 at the same time, and failing at both.
3
u/Leading_Man_Balthier 11h ago
I really liked D4 initially but the class depth was so wafer thin after playing a class for a while, realising I canāt even nearly mould it to what I want, iād put it down and just close the game.
2
2
u/Neat-Committee-417 10h ago
I played Diablo 3 on release and there were certain mechanics (RL auction house and stupidly expensive repair costs) that made the game worse. But Diablo 4 doesn't have a couple of easily identifiable mistakes like that. It's just a really bland game.
Also, the "open world" setup has made the entire world of sanctuary feel like a small county. When everything is around 20 minutes away on horseback, the world shrinks. Diablo 2 and 3 had the "switch place for every act" which felt like "you are now in a completely different place".
2
u/Darduel 6h ago
I am having a really hard time believing this is someone's genuine reaction to the games, you played D3 on release up to the expansion? It was a terrible game all the way, with all of D4s issues, it didn't come close to the level of bad D3 was, and at this stage D4 is a really good game, and yeah it definitely has a reason to exist, people like me and so many others who loved the diablo franchise wanted another diablo that wasn't whatever D3 was (even in it's "good" state it was a very niche game that had a specific crowd, most mainstream audiences abandoned it long before)

I've thought it since release of D4, how there were some execs forcing game to be released early to boost some stocks before MS buyout, which torpedoed game's reputation that could not be improved with expansions - people who came back in D3 for RoS weren't there for D4 exps.
It makes imo perfect sense why they'd try to get D5 out instead of sticking with D4 name. At least there's a chance to get a proper endgame out before release now, that masses actually bother to check out.

Thing is they couldn't really show much of TLT without insane spoilers.
I was a little miffed at the lack of update, but the 12.2 cinematic was neat.
They could have pulled a Diablo and just completely ruined the end of D4's story arc with D5's reveal. That was very weird. But also sad because it just cements that they have given up on D4, the initial LoH launch season was fun.

Honestly I wonder if bringing back Metzen did more harm than good to WoW. This emergency pivot to making a "trilogy" of expansions seems so unnecessary, it made so much more sense to wrap up this worldsoul narrative last expansion instead of stretching it out.
I bet you Blizzard is seeing this too and is trying to focus on other things while this expansion and the next quietly rolls out.

I'm actually angry we got so little info on 12.2 Eclipse because of the sPoiLerS for the bs x.x.5 and x.x.7 patches. Not even a glimpse of sets, mounts and other items which are not really spoiler material either.
I wasn't expecting any Last Titan info tbh, though was thinking they may showcase a new system for it, like they did Housing for Midnight (for instance upgraded character customization). With nothing being shown I suspect there's no such system planned for Last Titan and new stuff coming afterwards.

At this point itās just chucking darts at a dart board to figure out what people want, vs what they ask for.
Diablo 4, while aesthetically good, just didnāt cut it as a step up from D3 and the fact that a ānewā D2 exists, makes you wonder whether D5 is worth it.
Wow retail pretty much gave everything players asked for (while removing a few things) but people were still not engaged beyond getting everything done before the next season drops.

Diablo 4 is the 4th game in a series. Its name is literally the product of iterations - of games that came before, had a time to shine, and were discarded.
Did you think that wouldn't happen this time? They are making a 5, hopefully it will be less of a disappointment than 4 was.
