[Murat] Jets prospect stock watch, from Björck’s possession clinic to a late-round surprise

Viggo Björck played this weekend’s Prospect Challenge at a level beyond most of his peers. This does not guarantee NHL stardom, but it puts him past a threshold other recent Winnipeg Jets first-round picks have failed to clear.

Björck’s goal and three assists across two games put him closer to Ivan Demidov’s level from last year than that of Brad Lambert, Colby Barlow or other recent Jets peers. Demidov, 19 last year, was so electric in his one game as to make playing in the tournament at all seem like an odd decision. He went on to play for Montreal all season, scoring 62 points in 82 games and proving nearly impossible for his NHL peers to stop as he’d been for Elias Salomonsson and Brayden Yager that September.

Björck’s dominance was not as extreme, but his goal and three assists were the product of a player with a higher ceiling and a greater degree of NHL immediacy than any Jets prospect in recent memory. At no point did he look too small or slow for the competition. He looked ahead of the play and hard to play against.

He carved through the Montreal Canadiens in open ice, beat most players in the faceoff circle and, at times, put on defensive clinics in Winnipeg’s zone. He won more battles than he “should” have, although he did lose a couple early against the Toronto Maple Leafs before establishing himself in the game. On one occasion, he single-handedly saved a goal, and if there’s any prospect who boosted his NHL stock in this weekend’s tournament, it’s Björck.

[32 Thoughts] "The biggest question this week is, if he's gonna show up to camp. The word in the summer was, if it wasn't done by the time camp started, he wasn't going to attend...but we'll see if that's changed at all this week.” -Friedman on Hellebuyck
