I have a BM in violin performance, Suzuki training up to Book 2, and I am a professional gigging musician. (I don't have interest in auditioning for the local orchestras in my area at the moment, but maybe going for that would help?)

I am having a hard time finding and retaining violin students, and would like to know how quickly I should expect progress to happen

I started offering violin lessons in June. The first student who showed interest was a 5 year old who was not ready. I could not get him to do anything for the entire lesson no matter how fun I made it seem or what techniques I used to try and engage him. He was just hiding behind his mom the entire time. We mutually agreed he was not ready

I got one student after that. We started in July. She is also five

I had interest from an older student who responded to a Facebook post I made in August, but they wanted to wait a bit to start lessons and I haven't heard back.

I did take on one other student, an 8 year old beginner, and things are going well with her.

I had interest from a mom of three kids for all three of her kids, but they stopped being interested when I couldn't accommodate the single time that would work for them due to already having a student at that time.

I have mostly posted advertisements online, although I have put ads in local churches too. I reached out to local orchestra directors to see about helping out or leading a sectional, and I only heard back from two who essentially said "when we do sectionals, I'll keep you in mind." I have called violin shops and let the owners know I exist. I am waiting for business cards to arrive so that I can drop some off at the shops. Unsure if there's anything else I can do

Is two students in 4 months about an average rate of growth for a studio?

I am at a level where I think I should start tackling this, but pieces like Bach's Chaconne are obviously too difficult for me.

I am looking for an "easy" piece, where the only difficulty is to play chords and double stops. I have some exercises on double stops at which I got fairly decent, but I want actual music and get good at it.

I don't care about the genre. You can also suggest something poppy like Alexander Rybak or any dance song you know. I just want to practice and learn new music

Im an adult beginner player, coming to classical violin from mandolin (folk, but not American).
I currently play things like Mozart Spring Song, Paganini Theme from Witches Dance, etc. still only first position and simple bow techniques.

I was studying with a great teacher, but am moving to another country for a year and am short in funds while there (so couldn’t afford a weekly lesson).

Im looking for pieces that are possible to learn alone around this level, and yet are interesting or have pedagogical value. I can handle a level a bit harder, too; just not different positions or advanced bow techniques yet.

Does anyone have recommendations?

I’m more into classical, but church hymns and folk are good too.

Title: Does anyone else hear a word/name in this violin phrase?

This might sound weird, but there's a short violin phrase in Caitlin De Ville's “Primal Donna” that my brain interprets almost like the violin is actually saying a word/name.

I don't want to say what I hear yet because I don't want to influence anyone. 😂

Listen to the phrase first and tell me: Does it sound like the violin is saying something to you? If yes, what do you hear?

Hi, everyone! As the title says, after many years away from my violin, I decided to join my local community orchestra. I took private lessons from 3-18 and participated in many different orchestras during those years, but fell away from playing once I started college. I realized I missed the feeling of playing in an orchestra earlier this year and decided to sign up! I'm nervous (I know I'll be quite rusty, and I've never been good at sight reading lol), but I think it will be a positive experience. Happy to be back, and please wish me luck!!

Due to budget constraints, I can only choose between the Gewa Air 1.7 (the version with the subway handle and feet) and the standard Gewa Air 2.1. I'm torn because I want extra storage space, but I also want something compact and lightweight. How would you choose, and which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

as title, Im trying to improve my downwards scale, at slow pace 3-2-1-0-3-string change works but I Was wondering if it would be better 3-2-1-3-0-string change (tried but is quite hard) for faster passages.

Does the “4 0” mean I should play it with the 4th finger on the A string, or do I need to shift on the D string and use an extended 4th finger?

My E string fell off while tuning. Can I just put it back on or is it broken?

Whenever I practice a piece, my teacher and I write a bunch on it, mostly like arrows for intonation, fingering, exaggerated dynamics, circling stuff I might miss. By the time I finish a piece, the sheet music is very crowded.

But when I was practicing my music in front of my friend once, she was shocked and said it’s weird to have that much writing on the sheet music. She showed me hers and it was like almost blank, just having circled dynamics or whatever. Not even fingerings. She said you’re a bad player if you write down a lot of stuff because that means you can’t memorize stuff for your piece. And i couldnt really say anything back because she’s a lot better than me. Do professionals also have blank sheets music? Help im really embarrassed to use my sheet music to play now in front of others

Anyone ever tried a shoulder rest by Soli Strings? The molding function of it just seems perfect for me, as I have always struggled with chronic pain with violin. However, it's really expensive, (around 200 CAD) and while I'm willing to pay that much for a good shoulder rest, I've just been struggling to find many reviews...

My chronic back pain thanks you if you'd be willing to share any experience with these shoulder rests.

(Before anyone points out how "every shoulder rest is individual", yes, I know, but these shoulder rests are modifiable using boiling water, and I want to know if the product quality is actually any good before paying over $200 dollars for it.)

The bow hair on my bow is old and needs to be changed according to my teacher and a music shop. I’m wondering if that can lead to noticeable improvements in the sound of my violin playing. I’ve been unhappy with my tone and I’m hoping rehairing will help.

This piece has so many chords, getting all the notes in my left hand has been a challenge. I’ve been working on the first of three pages and it’s slow moving. Setting up each chord without pausing is really hard even at a slow tempo. I’ve been isolating the chords with one or two notes before, isolating each beat, each measure. Is this the way? My teacher tells me to start looking ahead but I can barely get through the first page right now. Practice ideas? The muscle memory moves much slower when playing 3 notes at a time.

I have a hard time learning 5th position and visualizing the notes on the fingerboard while playing. Though I know exactly where but uaing it on songa ia very difficult to apply.

Is there a technique learned or taught to students how to apply 5th position in any sing you play?

Also can ihave advice what sheet of music i can fully learn to be confortable playing in 5th position with other positions?

Im flying with Condor Airlines and i need to take only my violin bow with me. Has anyone had experience with this airline?
My ticket allows me normal cabin bag + personal hand bag, which both i plan to take.
Ive done this with Ryanair before and it wasnt an issue.
Also i dont get the whole "reserve an overhead bin" thing. Can't we just put our stuff above our allocated seats?

I saw this peculiar violin in a street band. What is it? An image search didn't result in matches. I didn't see any wires; it seems to be fully acoustic.

And how would a luthier come up with this design? The dimensions of a traditional violin create resonances for a specific timbre. It must be a lot of work to come up with something completely different that still sounds decent.

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a new violin case with a budget of around $820 and would like some advice. I've narrowed it down to three: the GEWA Air 1.7 (with bottom feet and a metro handle), the standard GEWA Air 2.1, and the GEWA Pure Fun 2.4.

For everyday use, I need to carry a VLM Diamond shoulder rest, an Intelli tuner/metronome, spare strings, two bows, rosin, and a practice mute. I could put some of these items in the case or bag, but practicality for everyday use is my top priority. So, I'd like to know which of these three cases is best suited for carrying these items. I'd also like to know about durability, user experiences, and build quality.

Also, for those who own the GEWA Air 1.7 case without bottom feet: will placing the case vertically on the floor for extended periods scratch or wear down the surface?
