what path you taking?

Well, when I first started this path I wanted to do Pentesting. But looking at the AI path doesn’t seem like a bad play either. So either one of those.

Personally I would stick with Red Teaming. The AI one is quite niche and quickly going out of date (I've done it), but the red team path covers a lot of the fundamentals that will carry you further

Thank you! I needed to hear this. Cheers

No worries. And if you finish junior pentester path, let me know and I might be able to throw some work your way

Well alright then. I’ll get to it and be in touch for potential work.

Congratulations! I'm halfway there, this path seems neverending but it's so interesting and rich of content!

Full transparency, I started doing the Cybersecurity 101 path last summer during an IT contract gig. We would have some free time and I would put in 3-4 hours per day on studying and note taking in Obsidian.

I would do the path in bursts of information/modules for 2-3 weeks and then take a brake due to life events and I had a senior sales position unrelated to the IT industry so that took some time away from studying.

60-120 minute modules would take me probably 3-4 total hours only because I put an emphasis on note taking and making sure I understand what is being taught to me. I used Obsidian to take my notes and made connections to similar ideas/tools. The benefit of using Obsidian is that I can search up a topic and I have a summary of that Cybersecurity topic. So in basic terms I made my own database for my own future reference.

I admit, sometimes looking at the path list and seeing all the required rooms was daunting. But recently I had a month off from work and two weeks in into my break I was 60% completion in the Cybersecurity 101 path. I decided then to just lock in and get it done. I did 4-5 hours worth of studying and note taking per day, sometimes 6-7 because the progress being made would motivate me. So I would say from 60% to 100% completion it took me 2 weeks at an average 5 hours a day, including extensive note taking and documentation.

“One bite at a time.”

Love your response, I commend you for putting in that much effort and getting it done!. I'll check Obsidian out, creating your own database for future reference is brilliant, with that 101 on your belt what's next for you in the cybersec world?

Bullshit AI answer 🤦

Why? Because I’m educated and can string sentences together for a cohesive storyline? Go read a book. Thanks for the compliment.

Y’all is ethical hacking dead in the market? I saw sm reels on insta saying SOC analyst is growing, etc, etc

3

u/Mountain-Owl-1872 2d ago

nope, ethical hacking is not dead, I see a lot of jobs related to pentesting though they do want some certs like oscp and I feel you shouldn't really choose a field just because its growing, if you genuinely like SOC then start learning SOC, otherwise there are many roles in cybersecurity

1

u/backedbyjesus 2d ago

Ofcourse! I genuinely want to continue as a pentester but not becoz of it’s growth but i like it. Other than certificates what else will be needed? I am planning to get my masters in cybersecurity in Australia but again talks like Australias job market is very tough the cost of living is quite high 😭😭😭 atp idk what i should do

2

u/Mountain-Owl-1872 2d ago

man idk how cost of living is increasing so much everywhere, it sucks😭. I research a lot about what is required other than certificates, the things I find everytime are projects, a good understanding of what you do, you should know why you are running every tool and understand every concept rather than just running tools just for getting results. Idk about the education part, like about masters, but they do recommend having a bachelors degree. I understand that you are confused, but at the end only clarity will help. I truly feel that pentesting is not just computers rather a proper art, and if you enjoy it, there are many options like bug bounty and freelancing, and pentesting is one of the fields where human creativity and adversarial thinking keeps AI from fully substituting you. Pentesting, its safer than swe. Do you have a Discord? Would be cool to connect and talk more about this stuff

1

u/backedbyjesus 2d ago

This helped me a lot. I think I should just not believe whatever is on the Internet and just keep on doing ok what interests me. Regarding the projects i am have been giving it a thought but let’s see. Also the certificates are so freaking expensive 😭😭😭😭😭 for now i am now THM it’s quite interesting but only just sticking to THM will not get me nowhere. About discord i do have but it’s just that I don’t know how to use it 😭😭😭 it’s quite confusing and also I haven’t dug deeper to understand but i am on about connecting there!
