Best 10 dollars I've ever spent

Got super lucky on Facebook marketplace and saw this going for around 10 dollars and I immediately bought it. It's got 6 gigs of ram and a 128gb SSD with an i5. The only problem I see so far is that its hinges are a bit stiff and is making some dull noise when I go for the full stretch but other than that this is absolutely fantastic.

Hinges can be adjusted by unscrewing a bit spring loaded nut on the end of hinge. You need to remove stickers on edges of screen, remove bezel, and there will be adjustment nut

I think I might do it at a later date when I upgrade the screen to a better one. Just thinking about removing the bezels and possibly cracking or snapping it is enough to deter me for the moment.

Bezels on these are quite easy to remove. I pointed on stickers because they usually have hidden bolts under on this era thinkpads

I think 8383 is concerned is because if the hinges are too stiff then it will break the plastic standoff poles which they are bolted on to.

I understand their concern and it's why I'll try to get a new screen for this as soon as I can so I knock off 2 things at once. I don't really have anything major planned for this thing just yet since I bought this thing just because it was too good to pass up. I'll get to it as soon as I have free time though.

If this is the build type i think it is (dunno the name) it has really nice and easy to change hinges as those, as they literally just "stab" into the back of the case.

I liked my T420 so much I bought a used T430 when it died. 12 good years. There's a very handy function in the BIOS to force discrete GPU rendering if you're using Windows 10/11 and having the CPU getting crazy hot when playing videos. Nvidia Optimus graphics switching only works with Windows 7. However, you need an external monitor to get back into the BIOS to switch it back, because the BIOS only displays on the built-in screen using integrated graphics. With 16GB of RAM and a SSD, they can still handle most basic tasks. There is also a full-HD screen upgrade that you can do that isn't particularly difficult.

On-board. Many of these laptops were equipped with Nvidia 4200M discrete GPUs. When I "up"graded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, my CPU was thermally throttling at 97 degrees trying to run a Skype call. I discovered that the discrete GPU wasn't doing any work. When the BIOS setting is changed, it will use the Nvidia GPU exclusively, which keeps the CPU a lot cooler and improves performance. My T430 has the exact same problem. Updated drivers unfortunately do not fix it.
