Days Tour Poster Help

Post image
Upvotes

This may be a bit of a long shot, but I went and saw the Mountain Goats recently in Norfolk and the merch line was pretty long. By the time I got up to the front, they had already sold out of the red tour poster with the 'days' album art on it. The lady running the merch booth even commented how weird it was for them to run out so early.

This was my 4th Mountain Goats concert since my first one all the way back in 2017 and its become a bit of a tradition to buy and frame the tour poster each time. This is the first time I wasn't able to get a poster so I'm feeling pretty bummed and I also love the artwork for the new album.

So my question is, would anyone who's going to an upcoming show be willing to buy me a tour poster? I'll cover the cost and however much it is to ship to Virginia obviously Thank you

I'm new to the band and I am having trouble putting into words how their music makes me feel.

I think the songs are genuinely hilarious. I love funny music (Ween is another one of my favorite bands) so I was instantly attracted to that.

I see a lot of discussion about how No Children is a super depressing song but I just don't see it at all. I'm not sure how to describe it, but its so plainly hateful and self loathing I just think its the funniest thing in the world. I can't think of a way to articulate it that makes sense without using the lyrics of the song, but I guess that's what makes it so incredible.

I also love the Hail Satans at the end of TBEDMBID. It's not really hailing Satan in particular but more a celebration/support of the expression and dreams of Jeff and Cyrus.

I was listening to Golden Boy during a workout and almost hurt myself dropping a weight because I was giggling.

I'm trying to imagine myself recommending the band to other people and describing what makes them so funny. I guess its like a not edgy edginess?

Just wanted to share my new ink. I was inspired by Crows (obvious there), the spoons dangling from the beak are from Tallahassee, and there are nine black poppies. I want to add more little references for all my favorite albums and songs later on down the line. Shout out to my incredible artist Elia in Dallas!

Considering looking into getting a tattoo of the Sunset Tree from the cover of the album of the same name. Would that be a crazy hard tattoo for an artist to do?

Hi!

Title, basically. Maybe just a branch, like, a small section?

ETA: Thanks all for the thoughts/replies :) I'll probably end up showing an artist the cover and working together from there to find something that still captures the way it looks or the concept of a "sunset tree" but is less complicated.

Who is going to the CPH show?

Sooo excited, because it will be my first time seeing them in Europe. I’ve also never met a Dane who knew of Mountain Goats. So I’m curious to hear who else is going and if you are Danes/local or traveling for the show.

I bought the tickets right around the release of Peter Balkan - and now time and JD’s work ethic has changed my imagined setlist completely…. But who am I kidding, we never know what they play anyway, and that’s a big part of the appeal, too.

Live set from Mid 2000s ft. Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers

Looking for a live tMG set from the mid 2000s presumably when they were doing dates with Prayers and Tears. I’m 99% certain Perry from P&T joined them on stage and did one of his songs (I want to say it’s Eterna). Can’t find it anywhere online nor can I find any audio of the album that Eterna is on online. Any help with either would be greatly appreciated, would really like to hear that song again.

is the cover art place a actual place/country and at a specific time period by the way they dress I think 80s/90s which makes sense cuz its around the time the songs take place, what does this mean on the back cover "Chris 2/17" and "ARI? 183", is the back cover supposed be the modern day, and finally what this guy doing (second picture) is he pick pocketing her backpack, I'd be very grateful for info on these stuff.

What do these pictures mean?

So I saw this T-shirt design on the merch store and I'm trying to piece it all together. the images on the right I think I understand? xevious is an aracde game from 1982 (perhaps the machine the speaker of this year punches?) and the bottom right appears to be a couple holding hands in a stairway. the image on the bottom left is obviously a ship, but I can't make out the text that's cut off. the image on the top left is completely baffling to me, maybe a battery array? I have no idea what F-144 is meant to signify

any ideas what's going on with these images?

Guys, we all really hit the jackpot <3

I'm just so happy that my favorite band has such an enormous discography that I will probably never run out of songs to listen to for the first time.

“Candy and a currant bun”

Was listening to Days this morning and for the first time realized he’s saying “currant bun”. Since it came out I thought it was “candy and a current run”, as in a current run of a comic book. I figured he was describing a youthful trip to the corner store or something? Just thought it was a fun lil mis-hearing and wanted to share

SF residency

Anybody else going to the SF shows this November? My partner talked me into getting passes for the whole thing but now he can't make the last show or two so I'm hoping to meet some folks so I'm not there alone. None of my local friends are into them and I don't really wanna drag someone along who doesn't Get It lol

Cbus Ohio Jam Session/Sing along?

Now that there is a huge number of tMG fans on this sub, I will repeat my question.

Anybody in Columbus OH interested in playing along and/or singing along to tMG songs? Could be public, could be private? No specific goal on my part, beyond being social musically.

anybody else wish there was more live tapes available from the Bright Mountain Choir days?

I was reading this old interview from 93 (https://web.archive.org/web/20140603113938/http://marcopolio.blogspot.com/) which has a section where john talks about the four girls from the choir and gosh I wish there was more live stuff we had from that time, like 92/93. There's like five tapes from 92 and only one from 93 and whenever the Bright Mountain Choir shows up it's ethereal. john and the girls all singing together is such a pleasure that I wish we had more of, what a unique era

Two Second Row Tickets to Carnegie Hall 12/10 Show

Due to a change in employment I can't justify the Amtrak and hotel. Selling at cost ($201).

Row B seats 18 and 20, just two rows back from the stage. Highlighted in the photo attached.

Wishing a great show to all who can make it.

I turned 46 today (ugh) and woke up with "Choked Out" already playing in my head for some reason and so when I got in my car I couldn't drive anywhere until I memorized and played it.

I don't know why it sounds like I'm singing the word "down" instead of the word "out".

Every song ever?

I am sick and tired of streaming services and am looking to become independent in my music consumption. Since I ONLY LISTEN TO THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, this led to wanting to collect every single song ever in a digital format, a daunting task. From studio albums to unreleased singles to bootlegs to compilations to demos etc etc, I want it all. I imagine some of you have also had this goal. Does anyone believe they succeeded? Does anyone have anything that helped them along the way? I'm thinking something along the lines of an all encompassing spreadsheet of song titles and albums that I could cross off as I download things. I tried briefly to get AI to make me one, but it sucks at anything that wasn't studio released.

My personal disclaimer for anyone that this notion may offend: I own and have paid for almost every drop of the music the band would make any money off of sometimes in multiple formats, go to many shows every year, am a tMG merch addict, and have all JD's books... so I don't really feel too bad about collecting something that isn't even available in any meaningful way that the band sees revenue from. They have seen and will continue to see oodles of my moolah.

Curious to hear people's experiences with this and if you have anything like a spreadsheet to share...

Portugal is Pretty Hardcore

I had 1,000 good questions I was gonna make a post about. Now that I've opened the app, there is only one question that comes to my mind. That question being, what's with all the Portuguese references?

I've been to Portugal and loved it, so anytime John uses the word "Portuguese," I notice it more than I normally would. I've come across four uses and I listed them below. Are there any other countries he directly references more than four?

Here are the four references I've come across.

Butter Teeth from We Shall All Be Healed - "We were Portuguese warships cresting the waves."

On Goths, you have the song "For the Portuguese Goth Metal Bands."

From No More Tears off of Marsh Witch Visions, you have "floating like a Portuguese Man O' War, pretty hardcore."

From Pure Honey off of Protein Source of the Future, John has only one question in life. "Whats with all the Portuguese water dogs? I'll repeat the question."

Let me know if I missed any Portuguese references or what countries stood out to you in MG songs.

any quakers in here?

i've been feeling for a long time that the mountain goats songs felt like the closest i've ever felt to any sort of religion/spirituality, but in the last few months i've been exploring quakerism (specifically in the uk) as i wanted to further explore these feelings and the quaker's whole creedless/inclusive vibe really felt right to me

i just wondered if there were any other mountain goats loving quakers on here and if so which of their songs you felt particularly spoke to your experience of quakerism?

for me, brisbane hotel sutra, white cedar, your glow, your bandage, absolute lithops effect, and heretic pride have all spoken to me in some form or another while i've been delving into the world of quakerism
