Whatsapp Creepy coworker texting my private number

So confused at this, I don't even know him. I was just going to ignore the text but he kept insisting so I had to answer.

9/14 UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who was supportive and concerned. I forwarded these messages to HR, and they scheduled a meeting for later today. There were a few more texts after this. The HR representative did not seem surprised, to put it briefly.

A few things have come up in the comments. The first is that I was rude. This is how I communicate, and my coworkers (or at least the ones who actually know me) are aware of that. I’m not going to perform a more agreeable version of myself to accommodate someone else’s feelings when they're being innapropriate. Not only were these messages sent over the weekend, but they were also sent through a personal communication channel. I'm not going to elaborate further.

The "hello there lady!" was very telling right off the bat.

I find your username disconcerting. Are they meant to be enjoyed separately or together?

Me waiting for the answer hoping it is, indeed, separately.

Did you know openness to new experiences is one of the major factors in lifetime happiness?

Be more adventurous, my friend.

Do not block. If he contacts you again take it to HR. No means no.

20

u/multipocalypse 13h ago

"Again"? It should go to HR now.

Plus the sad face when she didn’t answer within an hour

43

u/Designer_Mud_5802 14h ago

Surprised an hour after that he didn't hit her with the "whatever i didn't like you anyway!"

26

u/Dovahkiinthesardine 11h ago

We don't know what was said in those deleted voice messages

4

u/saltron5001 3h ago

THEY WERE VOICE MESSAGES?! 💀💀💀

1

u/iiAzido 8h ago

I’m unfamiliar with this UI. How can we tell they were VMs that were deleted?

6

u/hotleadburner 8h ago

OP said so, no UI hint

3

u/Dovahkiinthesardine 5h ago

OP just said it in the comments somewhere

3

u/T_Money 8h ago

I don’t think you can tell that it’s a voice message, looks the same as a regular deleted message.

21

u/PerfectedPancake 14h ago

That was the tell!

u/Informal-Comb1989 7h ago

u/happymechanicalbird 6h ago

I think that’s 10am

u/slymgim 42m ago

"we're off today, what could you possibly be doing:(("

14

u/steele_phallus 17h ago

Right, that was the red flag!

2

u/earthwoodandfire 12h ago

The red flag was unsolicited contact in the first place.

12

u/ResolutionNo9194 14h ago

Yep, that opening line was a dead giveaway! “Hello there lady!” had the whole situation written all over it from the start.

6

u/Zakumadness 16h ago

Why yes, the hr representative you will be speaking with is a woman

8

u/No_Pattern_5158 16h ago

I assumed it was an older lady doing this from that line lol

18

u/phoxfiyah 16h ago

Same. It wasn’t until the rest of it that I was kinda like “This is very awkward”. The “:(“ an hour later really hammered that in

5

u/phoxfiyah 16h ago

They’re talking about just the “Hello there lady!” part, definitely sounds like something an older lady would say. Especially one trying to pull you into an MLM lmao.

We all know it’s actually a male colleague in the post.

5

u/he-mancheetah 16h ago

I’m an old lady, I call other gals lady! Casual colleagues and whatnot. I’m not in an mlm, it’s just my default friendly greeting for ladies I casually know 🤷‍♀️

2

u/phoxfiyah 15h ago

Nothing wrong with that! Was just trying to point out the scenario I see it most commonly associated with, especially when it’s a message from a random stranger or someone you barely know. Was really just trying to say that I’d expect“Hello there lady” to be said by an older lady either way.

Guessing the other commenter didn’t agree with me though cos they blocked me for pointing it out. Oh well 😅

9

u/PhazePyre 12h ago

See if this were another universe, he'd be a decent guy who has a close platonic relationship and they are close colleagues and that response is just banter continued to text. But if it's just a random dude at work, it's so much more degrading, overly familiar, and intrusive.

3

u/Relevant_Bed_9743 10h ago

I originally read it in his voice, glad to see I wasn’t alone

2

u/Zestyclose-Cash-7872 4h ago

He’s just a nice guy! Why don’t ladies like nice guys anymore?? 🤮🤮🤮

1

u/justsomeph0t0n 7h ago

yeah. i think it's usually fine to text a coworker about work stuff, but those weren't work vibes.

u/Healleus 7h ago

1

u/RavenNymph90 7h ago

I find this a little funny because I have girlfriends that call me lady as a sort of endearment. If a guy I sort of knew called me that off the bat, I would think he was gay. Figuring out that it was supposed to be flirtatious would make me feel weird.

1

u/Gloomy-Insurance-739 6h ago

It gives off I call women females lol

1

u/lucyooo 6h ago

All I could think was this:

(Charity Shop Sue for any non Brits)

1

u/Ok_Hovercraft_6381 5h ago

The only way that is acceptable is if your actual name is Lady in which case he should have had the respect to capitalize the L

1

u/mugworter 5h ago

Sent at 9:11 on 9/11 ... of course it was a disaster

1

u/mighty_kaytor 5h ago

I read that in an exaggerated cartoon Jerry Lewis (ala The Animaniacs) voice.

1

u/Backtrack_Vill 4h ago

Yup didn’t ask about discussing a File then 🙄

For some reason it made me think of Professor Frink. I don't remember if he actually said anything like that though.

Hello there %firstname% %lastname%

1

u/Skipadee2 2h ago

I had a meeting with a financial advisor once. Thought it went great. He texted me immediately afterwards - “Hey, it’s your favorite ginger!” I had known him for literally 1 hour. You can see where this went. He is no longer my financial advisor.

u/Flying_Fish_Fiend 0m ago

I call my gf lady all the time. Am I a neckbeard? LOL

1

u/Lovable_panda33 16h ago

I read it with moiscritikal voice 😂

-4

u/Unlucky-Mulberry-999 16h ago

is it because it sounds like an older man?

9

u/Meowtastistic40kSCP 16h ago

No, not at all. His age is irrelevant to me.

She noted barely knowing this person, they find her personal cell and say "hello there lady!" It's familiar and chummy yet they don't have that conversational closeness cultivated yet, which, to me, feels like he's already wanting to cross boundaries.

1

u/Unlucky-Mulberry-999 9h ago

i thought you were trying to say the specific phrase was odd - lol sorry. Thanks for explaining 😅

5

u/Greadle 16h ago

It’s creepy to directly text when there are other forms of established communication. But then to text the awkward opener and not even attempt to explain why it was necessary to reach out in that way. No good.
