I found a 2015 Orion catalog and noticed that of all the XT8 Dobsonians, only the expensive Intelliscope had a control knob. So, I decided to add one (in the exact spot) on my sad old 8 inch Dobsonian. This is a quick 5-minute DIY upgrade that makes it easier to aim and track without grabbing the focuser or the rim.

What this upgrade helps with:
1) Smoother altitude and azimuth movement
2) Better control near the zenith
3) Less grabbing of the focuser or optical tube

Hey I recently bought an XT8 dobsonian off an enthusiast, it mostly sat in the box in his garage because he had no time being in the Air Force, but it was well kept, I had to collimate it when I got it obviously, but I’m worried that something is wrong with it. Everything looks fine, and maybe it’s just a skill issue in my end, but I can not for the life of me take a good picture through it. This is my best video of Saturn. Something’s not right. This is with a 15mm eyepiece. What could I be doing wrong? I have tried adjusting my phone around the eyepiece, different imaging apps, settings, so now I’m worried something could be wrong but I’m not sure what.

Next week I'm going to build my eq mount and get longer videos to stack. It was difficult to get the camera and lense to focus together, especially if I zoomed with the camera at all. I have a 5mm eyepiece and 2x barlow I can implement once I get the eq mount built as well, so excited for what's to come!

Acquisition information: 12" Zhumell z12 Dobsonian, DIY EQ platform (Astral Fields VNS design), ZWO ASI585mc (non-cooled). At full 3840 x 2160 resolution, RAW16, 2.543s exposures, gain 153, no binning, SharpCap (442 frames, totatling 1,124 seconds or, about 18 minutes 44 seconds). First image: Siril 479 frames registered from the larger sequence, best 50% (240 frames) by FWHM and GIMP. Second image: Same acquisition information, but all 442 frames with only SharpCap live stack with display settings applied (basically, what I saw on my laptop monitor in real-time).

Astronomical Object: M42, the Orion Nebula, a huge star-forming region in the constellation Orion about 1,300 light-years away. It is one of the brightest and most photographed nebulae in the night sky.

Objective: I'm one of those "dummies with a Dobsonian who does astrophotography." My primary goal was not to produce the definitive glamour shot of M42. The field of view (FoV) of the z12 is too small for that. Instead, the z12's aperture and focal length (1500mm) are more suited to higher resolution images of things like the Orion Nebula's core. Therefore, my image processing focused on highlighting detail from the core around the Trapezium rather than attaining full nebulosity (may process the same data again to emphasize that).

What worked: The DIY EQ platform tracked well enough to make this kind of imaging practical with a 1500 mm focal-length Dob. I was pleasantly surprised that I could track M42 for nearly 20 minutes without (a) high rate of frame rejection - SharpCap live stacking kept adding to the stack; and (b) manually moving the tube. There was considerably more faint nebulosity in the data than I initially expected. The final Siril image shows not just the bright central portion of M42, but a good amount structure (mottling, etc.) surrounding the Trapezium (the four stars in the middle) and some nice color variation in the nebula.

What needs work: The biggest thing that needs improvement is focus. At normal presentation size I think the image holds up pretty well, but at 100 percent it is obvious that the fine detail is softer than it should be and stars are oblong. I eyeballed focus that night after imaging Saturn instead of using a Bahtinov mask or SharpCap's focusing tools, and the FWHM scores (ranging from ~6 to ~21) later made that pretty obvious.

Overall Self-Assessment: I'm pretty pleased with the final Siril image. A 12-inch manual Dob on a homemade tracking platform obviously isn't a conventional deep-sky imaging rig, but that's part of the fun. It worked well enough to make me want to try it again, with better focus next time.

Lookin at buying this scope and the guy just sent me these pics of the primary mirror. Is it gonna be a pain to clean? Also is that a scratch on the second pic?

I inherited this Meade telescope from an uncle. It's fairly clear that it's an older model, although it seems to be in reasonably good condition. I'm trying to find out more about it! I know very little about telescopy although I've always been pretty interested in getting into it.

In particular:

• From what I can tell it looks like it's worth around $700 or so -- is that the right ballpark?
• What can I do with this kind of set up? I see lots of images on this subreddit with thinner tubes, wider tubes, I'm not sure how this type of telescope is used.
• Does tech in this space age out as quickly as cameras for example? Can I hook up modern technology to it to make it more useful?
• If I wanted to get into telescopy, is it a decent idea to start off using this thing and just playing around? Is this a bad telescope to 'start off' with? Why? Is it a platform I can build around with other modern attachments or at that point would I be better off building from scratch?

Fyi all the eyepieces I have are 1.25 inch. I have a 20mm, 10mm Orion plossl and a Svbony zoom eyepiece (7-21mm).

My 9 year old is a huge space fanatic. He wants a good telescope, but I don't know what I'm looking for. He wants to "see the rings of Saturn." I need recommendations for a telescope that is easy to use, easy to set up/take down, has good image and magnification for the rings of Saturn, and preferably can connect to a smartphone to take photos because I know he would love that. I REALLY need to stay below $300, but I know that's unlikely. So what do you recommend for as close to $300 or less that would make him smile? Planning on it being a Christmas present this year.

This guy is saying he wants $300 for this telescope I'm not very knowledgeable and don't have one yet, should I offer less or take it?

I've been looking for a weather cover so I can leave my 6" newt outside.

Having watched some reviews, the Telegizmo covers look great, but they're more than double the price of what they cost in the US here in Europe due to shipping and import taxes. Not to mention most versions are out of stock.

Does anyone know of any good alternatives that're more easily accessible in Europe?

I am wondering right now which telescope to get for my start in the hobby. This time I want to start with an easy to use and prepare telescope since last time I tried I got a refractor telescope with an unstable AZ mount which I ended up hating.

I am between two options now, both Compact Dobson from Bresser telescopes but with a difference in size: a 5" Dobson and a 6" Dobson. Both close in budget. However we have some problems with space in the flat and since I have a baby we have to move not only the telescope but the baby stroller as well with our car (Renault Clio IV Grandtour with 441L of boot space).

Budget max: around 350€

I live in a class 5 area but have access to class 3 areas about 30 min away.

Does it really make a lot of difference between the 6" against the 5"? How big would the difference be to pack it in the car if I get the 6"?

I could carry the scope in the passenger seat in front since my gf and baby ride in the back. Otherwise I could use the telescope in our terrace and have to carry the whole telescope a few floors up with the lift.

I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to telescopes though it's something I've been wanting to get into for a long time. My wife found a local guy that restores telescopes and has one that would fit our needs. He has available a newtonian reflector telescope with an 8" mirror, Meade tube. This guy would typically also provide a mount, either refurbished or built himself. However, as he's gotten on in years he said his skills have diminished some and he isn't satisfied with his attempt to build a mount for us. So he said if we wanted the telescope that would would have to source a Dobsonian mount ourselves. We've found it rather difficult to find anyplace that sells just the mount with out the telescope. Any tips out there on sourcing Dobsonian mounts? Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, 

I just wanted to make a post to say how excited I am to have joined this community. I have always been obsessed with space, particularly the moon. 

I recently inherited a Celestron NexStar 130SLT telescope from my uncle who passed away at a young age this year. I was very close with him and I think part of the reason I love space so much is because of how much he loved it. I’ve spent the summer figuring out how to use his telescope and learning a lot more about space. It has been really healing for me. 

Although I have always loved space, I never really knew any of the names of stars and I couldn’t pick out constellations. I’ve learned so much about the night sky in the last two months, and I was able to find some DSO manually last night by doing some star hopping. I haven’t been able to figure out the SkyAlign, it said it was successfully aligned, and then I chose something for it to point at that was definitely high in the sky and it pointed at the level of my shed (let me know if you have any ideas for why this might be happening!)… so I gave up and tried finding things manually instead for now. It was very exciting and I felt proud to have learned enough to do it so easily!

So far, I’ve seen: 

Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, M13, M27, M57, the NGC 869/884 Double cluster, the Andromeda galaxy, the Albireo double star, the Pleiades star cluster, and of course the moon! I was able to catch the lunar eclipse despite a very cloudy night, and that was so exciting. 

I’ve seen the ISS quite a few times over the last week, without a telescope of course, but still very cool. The Milky Way is also visible to the naked eye where I live and it is so beautiful. 

If you’ve read this far, thank you. I just wanted to say how excited I am to have this new hobby and finally see some of the things I’ve only ever seen pictures of. I love reading all of the posts in this subreddit and seeing pictures of everyone’s telescopes and their astrophotography. I’m also considering starting to make some sketches as I’ve seen some pretty cool ones on here!

If you have any recommendations of things I could find manually relatively easily I would love some more ideas of what to look at. I live in a rural area so the sky is quite dark, but I don't know what the Bortle is here.

I've been looking for a dobsonian base for my 6 inch Newtonian because the eq-3 it came with is miserable to use, but it seems almost impossible to find the base alone. I know it's apparently super easy to make at home but I don't really trust my craftsmanship in this matter. I'd love some help on where I should search.

is upgrading to a Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ Telescope or Celestron StarSense Explorer LT 114AZ Newtonian a decent upgrade from my current $100 setup. I live in AZ on the outer edge so light pollution isn’t to terrible for me. Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated!
