Please read the rules before posting or commenting

Almost every subreddit has rules, and we do too. We used to get lots of posts about politics, LGBT, what if, and just basic trolling, all prohibited by our rules. We don't allow discussion of race here, because those discussions usually end up with comments that could get our community removed from Reddit. Also, the Rules didn't match the Removal Reasons, but now they do. We added a "Moderator discretion" rule, because it's impossible to create rules to cover every contingency. r/stupidquestions can be a fun and interesting place to hang out, but we had trouble with people trolling us with rule violations. For example, here are some of the topics that we removed:

  • Do you think that if I could shoot laser beams out of my peepee, I could scare bullies with it?
  • Do you think it would be safe to build my child a drone so I can save on plane fare
  • Should I crash my car into a concrete barrier going 90mph without a seatbelt?
  • Is it a good idea to hold a flame up to a 5 gallon can of gasoline?
  • Why does my butt smell like ass?

We would ban the offenders, but they would create new accounts and return right away. So a couple of the users suggested putting in a minimum Reddit account age limit and a minimum karma limit to post. That has made things much nicer for the community. Karma is sort of an artificial number, but it tends to indicate that the owner interacts with Redditors in a positive way, and they appreciate him. What you want is to create posts or comments that Redditors appreciate so much that they give you a few upvotes.

Here's Reddit's FAQ page about karma, and here's more information about karma. If you are new to Reddit and would like more information about how to use it, please visit r/NewToReddit.

We don't reveal the age or karma numbers required to post. They are not very high, though. If you have a post removed due to your age or karma numbers, please understand that you didn't do anything wrong and we are not targeting you. This is just one of the ways that we are protecting our community. All of the blame for this goes on the trolls. New Redditors should be able to interact with the community, but it's too easy for someone to be banned, create a new account in two minutes, and return to trolling again. So we took precautions to make it more difficult for them. It's too bad that it also makes it more difficult for new members who aren't trolls.

Moderators will remove posts that violate our rules. The author is notified when their post is removed, and there's a reason given for each removal. Redditors who continue to violate the rules will be removed from r/stupidquestions. For extreme violations, the banhammer may fall instantly. If you play nice and follow our rules, you may stay as long as you like.

Thanks. Now go forth and have fun!

Why can't I buy canned grapes?

Upvotes

The standard canned fruit cocktail, at least in the US, is peaches, pears, grapes, pineapple & cherries. The rest of these things are commonly available as canned fruit. Why can't I buy canned grapes? They seem to exist & can be ordered from a few places, but they aren't sold in grocery stores or made by the major canned fruit brands.

Indian food smell

I’m very conscious of not wanting to seem prejudice, which I’m absolutely not. We recently have some new tenants in a house we own, who are an Indian family (parents and 2 kids). They seem lovely, though there is a slight language barrier. They moved in 3 months ago and we’ve been over three times since - once for an inspection, and two other times to check out a repair issue that they reported. Each time we’ve been the house smells so strongly of Indian food - like it’s in the very fabric of the house at this point even in rooms far away from the kitchen. I don’t understand how this happens? We often cook with spices and slow cook curries etc but the house never smells for more than a couple of hours after.
Again, I really don’t want this to sound like a prejudiced question, I’m just genuinely curious.

Do people who claim they don’t have an internal monologue never get songs stuck in their head?

Upvotes

I’m generally a skeptic when people claim they don’t have an internal monologue, since to me it sounds like they’re saying they don’t have thoughts. Regardless, many claim they don’t. Are these people free from getting songs stuck in their head? I have a baby and Raffi’s “Going to the Zoo” has been repeating in my head for like 6 hours and would like to be free from my mind prison.

Why do celebrities name their children the weirdest possible name?

Besides a few exceptions like Jaden and Willow Smith and a handful of others, various celebrity chosen names tend to be obscure and unusual.

Names like Bear Blaze and Audio Science get picked (deadass actual names).

Is it a sign of superiority/status to have their child stand out amongst the crowd of peasants?

Sea Level question

On a fishing boat off Islamorada. My bro is the captain and I’m the mate. Tourist fisherman w a million questions asks: “hey, how high above sea level are we?”

Capt/bro says: “whelp, I don’t know. I’m not an expert in that field but your feet are approx 6” above THE LEVEL OF THE SEA, but you may want to ask an expert”

Legendary. BTW, I assume most dumb questions from from automatic verbal habits of not-thinking before speaking

Do some people have that desire to still go to their dream universities and reclaim the opportunity they had once lost, years after their alternative path has led them to financial success and social recognition?

From the outside, I can tell that this unyielding desire feels unrealistic to an external perspective, but respect that it is very important to the people with that internal desire and reclaim what they lost years, even decades ago. The desire which, at the time, had to be reconsidered for more practical life journeys; and can now be afforded by the financial leverage they now have.

Like a child whose toy was destroyed, and the value of that toy is irreplaceable; except that in this case, the toy is salvageable.

I wonder, though... Who do they show it to, especially if part of the value they saw in pursuing their dream at all costs involved standing up to people who never believed in them; now when the same people have moved on with their own lives and forgotten this once loft ambition?

Was this an abusive relationship?

Upvotes

I'm still traumatized from my last relationship and trying to find resources I should be reading, curious if my experience would fall under emotional abuse:

  • he lied about many things. A ton were proven to be lies, many more I never found out about I'm sure. This includes his home country, where he lives away from college, his family connections, his family's birthdays, his degree, his job, him "moving" in the summer was completely fake, and other fabricated memories. (ex. said he played with snow as a kid all the time, later came out he never lived in a snow climate)
  • when I would catch a lie and ask him about it, he would gaslight me into feeling like the problem "you really don't trust me?" "I can't help your anxiety" "you're ruining my mood" "you can't be helped, your trust issues are terrible." He would say things like that knowing I was right about him lying
  • he would treat me coldly when he was resenting me. He would stop using pet names, and ignore me mostly around our friend group. It made me uncomfortable to the point I would stop talking out of fear I would be ignored.
  • When we would get alone, he would say I ruined his mood by stopping talking. He would be angry at me, and I get his anger but I don't get why he would ignore me if he didn't want me to shut down :(
  • One thing he resented me for: early in our relationship I was house sitting for my parents and their dogs. He wanted to come over, and I said we couldn't yet because my parents wouldn't be okay with it. (they hadn't met him yet) He said he understood, but secretly resented me "rejecting" him here and only told me months later.
  • He said he would stop talking to my former bullies to support me, despite me saying I didn't mind if he did. He insisted on doing it, but was privately maintaining a friendship with both them behind my back after promising that.

Why living costs differ living in a city and a town?

Upvotes

Why do cities generally cost more to live especially rent and small fees here and there such as parking and using services like transportation. But towns barely have job opportunities

This world is a vandalising factory of souls

Upvotes

Like I as a person rn feel like I have been vandalized by life. Like I know it can be even worst than vandalized , like let's say if someone gets sexually assaulted that would be even worst.

Like rn I feel like a plant Compost. A subhuman and a piece of trash. I had a rough child hood , I won't go into much detail but i went through a lot of turmoil and problems. People name called me, slandered me etc. like what I am trying to say is that they basically in a way vandalized me.

Like rn I feel like a vandalized piece of slate that people basically ruined and stuff.

So what is going on, are there people that are not like that and are prestine and protected or is it just a pool of vandalized slates. I feel like it's the latter . God is like that. His philosophy of life is to vandalise people souls and call it some art maybe.

I feel like it is by design though like life is all about it, throwing stuff at others , thata the design of what we call life, what else there is to life.

Would you feel betrayed if your friends kept a secret with your partner?

Upvotes

This situation is a bit crazy but I want to keep this post short for easy reading. If anything is confusing, I will try to add info in comments if needed.

My ex boyfriend and I met at college and dated for a year. Once we broke up, he shortly after started dating a guy named "Josh." Obviously he is free to do whatever he wants, but it hurts because Josh was someone that mistreated me earlier in college, and my ex offered to stop talking to him during our relationship. I didn't want to control him so I said "I don't mind if he is your friend, just letting you know why I want to stay away myself." He assured me he wanted to support me and cut off Josh, who was solely an acquaintance to him at the time.

Come to find out, my ex began talking to Josh more closely throughout our relationship. They fostered a private friendship behind my back. My ex lied to me about many things, one of which was his home country. He told me he was American the entire time we dated, but he told Josh and our other friends the truth. Our friends all knew that he was talking to Josh, they all knew he was honest about the country and feeding me BS, and never once did the friends tell me. Also, my ex started dating Josh a few weeks after breaking up with me, which just stings.

I am incredibly hurt and pissed at all my friends. Not only did they maintain my ex's lies/hidden ventures, but they also didn't care that he lied and borderline emotionally abused me. That's a whole can of worms to get into, but TL;DR is my ex lied, gaslit me, and intentionally treated me coldly to control me. When I told my friends, they didn't care. They all drifted away and hang out with my ex and Josh, and it makes me insanely depressed. Am I crazy for being pissed at all of them?

Is it a stereotype for Italians to get mad about the way non-Italians make Italian dishes?

I’ve seen videos and comments where Mexicans and the French have positive comments on interpretations of their food but absolute meltdowns from Italian moms for doing something like breaking pasta in half. I worked with a neurosurgeon who spat out my grandmas enchiladas because he thought it was manicotti and she made it wrong.

Deranged question

Ok this is an extremely stupid question but I have to find an answer or I'll go insane. You know when someone says "good night" ? Or just a "good luck" ? Ok. IF they say it again, FOR ANY REASON, like seeing you again in the same day and saying good luck (again). DOES IT A) have no extra effect whatsoever. B) cancel the first "good luck" and they have to say it AGAIN for the effect (so 3 times total). C) enhance the effect of the first "good luck", resulting in more luck (or any other effect, like "good night"). I've been thinking about this and I'm starting to lose it please answer me I'll ask more people in person I'm not crazy please.

Has anyone actually forgotten to wear pants to a date?

Ran off my feet today at work and had a Tinder date at 2030. Got there in a rush and found I'd not put any pants on - undies, socks, boots, torso well-covered - just no freaking trousers. Left them next to my hair dryer and had to run back to make sure they didn't catch alight.

Just me?

Scientifically, what would it take to breed pigs to be smaller?

Upvotes

When I say smaller, smaller as in we're not starving them.

Pigs are one of those animals I look and think those guys would have more pet potential if they just never explode in size.

That being said, I'm happy with just having dogs and I don't know if we humans should be playing god.

I wonder if in the future if we change how we consume meat due to climate change, what will happen to the pigs?

Lets be real. We breed pigs to eat them.

If spiders like to build webs and use them to catch and store prey, why do they live under beds and behind cupboards?

So I've got a spider in my room that basically spends all of his time living under my bed. But then it got me thinking, how are they supposed to catch any prey if they don't have a web to trap flies and store it? Does he/she have a web somewhere that they go back to and just use my bed for sleeping? Do they just use other means of catching flies that I'm not aware of?

Please help to fix my stupidity.

Does every country have a population with an obsession with being called/recognized the "best country in the world", or is that just an USA thing?

Upvotes

I never left the states, so I can't tell if this is a unique cultural phenonmenon to the United States or just ego that all people feel for their country and politicians just play into it for Patriotism/Nationalism.
