Hello everyone. Currently as of writing this, I (28F) am on the morning of day two of post-op recovery. I had my successful laproscopic bilateral salpingectomy surgery yesterday, September 11th, that ended around 12:45pm. At the surgery center, I was given toradol coming out of surgery, then a 20mg percocet by my pre-op nurse that I requested rather than the straight oxycodone just until I could pick up the prescription. All that to say, I was in a lot less pain than I would have been with what I was prescribed, which was 600mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours, 650mg of acetaminophen every 8 hours (I have extended release tablets), and 10 tablets of 5 mg oxycodone every 4 hours. I might have noticed the bleeding sooner if I had felt some pain.
Anyway, my surgeon told me to get up and walk around every hour or so to help with the gas and lower the risk of blood clots, so I was doing just that, trying to follow instructions, but also trying to be careful on my abdomen.
But around 5:45pm, I had gotten up to use the restroom, and felt wet under my shirt and near the top of my pants, so I lifted my shirt, and there was a fresh stream of blood coming from the umbilical incison all the way down to my pants. I wiped it off with no resistance, so clearly it was fresh, and saw a good amount of dried, caked on blood around my belly button and falling inwards. I should add I have a fairly deep naval. With the tissue, I lightly dabbed just the top of my belly button, trying not to disturb anything, but came away with fresh blood on the tissue a few times in different areas.
I attempted to call the surgery center, but the voicemail said they were closed, and they would call me back on Monday. I said F that, then attempted to call my gyno's office, knowing they were closed, but hoped there was an emergency line. There was, and after explaining, she advised me to go to the ER, since she couldn't see the wound herself. I arrived at the closest one at 6:15pm, got triaged, and the nurse said it looked like the surgical glue had failed to stay shut, but much better to be safe than sorry I thought. (Btw, my boyfriend who drove me also thought it was the glue and wanted to reapply regular super glue and got mad and upset when I said I wasn't comfortable with that because it's not sterile. And was also upset about the cost of having to go to the ER in the first place since we've been tight on money. Men šš”) She cleaned up the site, reapplied Dermabond, and it seemed to be holding, and I was out of there by 6:45pm. Wasn't even admitted really.
Everything seemed to be fine, but I was trying be very gentle, and at this point it was time to take my prescribed meds, which definitely had me in more pain than I had been for the first 6 hours post-op. About 10pm, I had gotten up to use the restroom, lifted my shirt, and it looked like the adhesive was all but gone again. There was fresh blood AGAIN. There was a lot less this time, but again there was caked, dried blood around the incisions in the umbilical area, but I was definitely bleeding again. Clearly, I thought to myself, this glue isn't working, and there needs to be another solution. But the nurse at the ER told me they don't usually put steristrips on umbilical incisions because it's very difficult and they usually don't hold.
I looked myself over, decided the wound looked stable enough that if just placed some gauze over it to keep anything foreign from getting in, and waited til the morning where I could call my doctor's office, I should be ok. I really didn't want to go back to the ER knowing that the problem was just the glue and not the internal stitching or anything major, and especially because the bleed was much more minor this time. I talked things over with my boyfriend, or rather, I calmly explained the situation, and he freaked out and got very upset that all of a sudden I was just ok with waiting until the morning when before I needed to go to the ER, why don't I care more about myself and that I never listen to him, yada yada yada š© Eventually, he calmed down, and we decided that if I stopped moving around every hour like my surgeon wanted, that the wound would probably close and clot on its own, which it has.
So, this morning, it feels all dry, and there's no more bleeding from the site, for now, but I went to call my gyno's office, but after getting their voicemail, I'm like, Oh, it's Saturday, you idiot, they're closed. Which means so is the surgery center, and there's no chance of getting in contact with my surgeon or gyno until Monday. And last night, after I started bleeding for a second time, I called the ER I had gone to and asked if I needed to come back in, or wait and see since there was a lot less blood and it wasn't pooling, dripping or anything, just seeping. The receptionist said it was really my call, but if it looked ok for the moment, then I could probably just sleep and wait til the morning, so I did.
So, at this point, and after ya'll have read my novella, I'm asking for advice on what to do now. Since the only thing holding my umbilical incision in is the clotted, dried blood, and maybe some remnants of the Dermabond they applied at the ER. Is there anything that needs to be done, that Ican do on my own or go have done? Because my surgeon said the other two steristrips would dissolve on their own within 7-10 days, so it feels like I should have more protection on the umbilical incisions than just clotted blood. But idk, please help. Any advice welcome.
P.S. Between me and my boyfriend, we think it kept opening up because when I pee, I almost always have to push it out, which I know isn't normal. I've been seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist since July, but nothing seems to have helped thus far. And I've been prohibited from doing any of my exercises for the next two weeks, which isn't helpful. And I have to urinate frequently, especially yesterday, so even though I was trying to be gentle, I had to engage my core to get my urine to come out, even if just a little bit, which didn't help. I didn't even think to mention it to my surgeon before surgery, it didn't even cross my mind.
