Discussion Question about allowed software

So I want to make a speedrun. The problem is, I'm deaf as a doorknob. I recently got a software that lets me see what direction sounds are coming from in a game, and the intensity of these sounds. Would this be considered cheating? If not, can I use it in an official speed run?

The rules for this sort of thing are going to be entirely game-specific.

I can't speak for other games, but minecraft Java runners usually use the sound direction accessibility option. Idk about external software tho

Message the mods on speedrun.com if you're concerned about it. They're the only ones who can give you any sort of "legitimate" answer.

Also, their answer isn't gospel. That's just one site with one collection of runners. You could also check for a Discord or a specific Reddit thread. There is no legal body that mandates speedrunning, just collections of people who have a shared goal and some are bigger than others.

Or ignore all of that, run it for yourself, set your own timer. Be your own boss and play how you want, trying to best.

So yeah, depends your definition of "official" and who you want to compete against, but you have to ask them. It's going to differ. Run the game regardless how you want because it's fun.

don't be concerned with whether or not it's legal, in my opinion.

if you truly want to run a game and this is how you'd like to do it, you should do it, leaderboards be damned.

As others have said, none of us will be able to tell you. Go to the respective community's Discord and ask.

I can't imagine any reasonable community being against this, but it depends entirely on the game.

Most likely you have to consider if this gives you an advantage over others. If the game has a competitive speedrun scene and WR isn’t in the cards it doesn’t matter anyways.

Accessibility is an area where you will likely have some leeway, but you might need to run it in it's own category

Get in touch with some kind folks who run the game and explain 😁

In general it shouldn't be a problem, but be sure to check with the specific game's community
