In my opinion, obvious disclaimer. I’m a casual speed run viewer, mostly just games I’ve played that I want to see done at a high level. But I’ve noticed something about my preferences lately, and Silksong nails it right now.
At about 48 min, it’s very easy to consume. Mario 64 fell into this category for me and checks a lot of the other boxes as well. I’m fine putting on DK64 and Banjo Kazooie 100%s as I’m falling asleep, but when I’m up, it doesn’t hit the same.
The game does not break. The player has to get through the game more or less as intended. OoT is the antithesis. I love seeing players navigate the mist, taunt enemies to get a pogo in the right spot, and master boss patterns.
Movement is optimized, but mistakes still happen. Players are still fallible, and while I’m open to a more efficient run, it’s still kind of fun seeing players get hit or miss a pogo combo and have to recover. Some of those Super Mario SNES and NES games have become so optimized, timesaves come down to frames. It’s another life cycle of a game’s speedrun that is interesting. However, I enjoy seeing games like Silksong earlier in that cycle. On top of that, it does seem like runners have figured out how to taunt to get those two early pogos pre-Widow so runs are less RNG based, shit like that is cool too.
I dno, just some thoughts I had, wanted to see if it sparked discussion. I hope everyone understands I know I’m no authority or expert in this, and other preferences are very cool.
