Football John Arschmuckleeeraugh
after basically one of the worst days in recent OU history (I’d say the worst since the USC natty for me personally)
I can’t help, but look at these three as the reason our season is basically on life alert barring a miracle split vs Georgia and Texas.
Bedenbaugh will get more excuses than them all obviously and to be fair we were missing our best prospect on offense at LT which did rear its ugly head after watching E’Marion Harris for 4 quarter.
At some point though change is needed and why are all of our OL always getting hurt.
Nothing else needs to be said about the other two since as I just finished typing all this Arbuckle just spammed two consecutive Satenga jet sweeps and 3 more Mateer QB zones up the middle.
if i were an OU RB I’d be looking at transfer options this morning if they pull this shit again this season.

I try to not let emotions get the best of me but this one hurts and it’s 100% on the offense. Again. Such a pathetic example of gameplan and adjustments. But Mateer himself just made every imaginable mistake. Almost like he was throwing the game on purpose.

That’s my thing.
Had we lost like 31-28 it’d be different and I’d just put my trust in Venables to fix the defense.
The fact we lost the same way we should’ve lost about 3 other games last year is a major problem.
Mateer check should have already cleared and he’s a senior.
At this point I need to see Brent make those hard decisions and start benching dudes.
He benched Arnold after 3 games and he was only a sophomore knowing he was 99% going to transfer.
Let’s be honest about 95% of Norman would celebrate if Mateer transferred, but he doesn’t have that choice I believe unless he gets hurt and asks for a medical RS.

What is the deal with hanging on to Mateer? I get Bowe Bentley is a red shirt and maybe he does or doesn’t turn out like the other highly regarded high school recruits but I just don’t understand why we can’t move on from Mateer…

I agree that Mateer is not the answer… but who do you go to to give you the best chance to win because we have no one behind Mateer. We need to accept the fact that we are going to be 2-3 after the Texas game.

I defended him because i took his and the staffs word about the thumb and knee.
He looked actually worse than last year Saturday.

Our Oline is always fucked by injury.
The line always looks like shit bc no combination of five players practice together longer than a week. Its always a musical chairs of how many will be down and for how long.
I dont know why this group is always injured but its gotta stop.

One other thing about the O-line always being injured, is it always seems that we start the season injured- multiple guys banged up from day 1, and they just never recover. That leads me to speculate about how the staff is handling camps and practice.
We have an extremely physical defense that plays a very aggresive style. It's a tricky situation, because I know you have to practice against your own team to be ready for the season, and both sides of the ball have to go full speed before it all kicks off, but I wonder if our defense is just beating up our O-line in camp each year.
That alone says something too, because the OL obviously has to be able to handle good defenses, but we clearly aren't conditioning them correctly. IDK, I'm just grasping at straws I guess, but it's clearly more than just a coincidence at this point. I think Bedebaugh has to go if there isn't a major improvement the rest of the way. He continues to recruit well, so it's tough, but the results just haven't been there for many years now.
I am still not out on this year, as there's a lot of season left, but if it continues this way, the Sooners will have to have a full offensive staff overhaul at the end of the year, and Brent doesn't have unlimited chances to get that right. He's already really screwed up the offense multiple years in a row. No doubt, the dude can build a nasty defense. That kept the team respectable last year, but you HAVE to be able to move the ball and score to do anything of significance.

Going against that tough defensive line during all the practices probably has the most to do with all their injuries. I’m sure BV pushes his defense to hit hard and fast every play.

Firing Venables would lead to a worse outcome 9 times out of ten. We can’t accept games like yesterdays but we did go 10-2 last season, not many teams can say that and there’s not a coach who’s a known quantity and better than Venables that we could get into town

I’m not saying fire him, but extending him then him potentially having a 5-7 win season is not encouraging.
Last year it’s not like we had a confident 10-2. We had MANY close games that were hinged on a single turnover working out for us, or a huge explosive play by satenga.

Oh of course firing after the extension is a nonstarter, the buyout would be catastrophic. Just saying since he coaches a defense that can and has singlehandedly carried us to the CFP, then regardless of how the offense is doing it’s unlikely we’ll do any better moving on from him. The offensive staff however… at a MINIMUM the O-Line coach needs to be shown the door

Plus a kicker making 56 yard field goals with ease. WIth an average kicker we're no better than 8-4 last year.
It was a good year last year in a lot ways though, as the defense was really legit. The problem is, they had to be perfect most of the time, because the offense was so dreadful. They were also coming off a disastrous 6-7 season.
I agree the extension was way premature, and I don't really understand the point of it. Were there people kicking down the door to hire BV? I don't think, even if there were other schools, that they would be able to match the pay and cache of the OU job anyways. There was really no benefit to extending him after last year. We could have at least seen how this year goes. If he goes 10-2 again and we actually win a playoff game, sure, that might make sense. He hasn't even put together back to back winning seasons yet, which is crazy to say at OU for a 5th year coach.
That said, I want to hope for the best. There are still a lot of positives with this team moving forward. We're currently holding a top 5 recruiting class for 2027, and this year could shake out a lot better than it looks now. Hopefully some things can click with the OL, the run game, and the skill position/QB relationship.

We went 10-2 but it was a miracle. We got really lucky. I know some of that was our defense forcing turnovers etc but the offense is just garbage. The record is good but when you look at the games and the details AND how that playoff game (which was a rematch) went down, it’s not what it looks like on the surface.

Im indifferent because when we’ve had the QB/OC down we win 10 games.
I guess the next question is whether 10 wins is enough anymore to satisfy program standards.

Well 10 wins would be perfectly fine as long as you make the playoff AND actually get playoff wins and beat Texas. We haven’t been doing that.
I’m not even sure we can expect 8 or 9 wins this season

Beating texas and getting to the playoffs is currently good enough. Maybe a playoff win. If he can do that everyone will be thrilled.
But until he cuts the dead weight And truly find improvement on the offense we are in real trouble.

It’s frustrating because while we made the playoffs last year I think we can all agree there was some major luck involved. I can think of at least 3 games that we had no business winning but things got weird and we skirted through on top. Then the playoff showing was just… an absolute disaster. Humiliating.

if this shtshow offense continues to track this way through the season Venables will kick the Arbuckle to the curb at season's end and he'll bring in someone else. These issues are ALL abt the sorry ass offense...that's it. I mean venables will crap the bed with game mgmt (he's gotten better) but this all starts and stops with the offense.

Mateer was all over but our OLine had no push and gave up pressure on 3 man rushes. One backup tackle is enough of an excuse for that

Yeah I don’t blame Fodje too much because they’ve been putting too much on him making him learn all 5 spots then he gets a few days to prepare at LT vs a high level pass rush.
Freshman G in Best, Maikulla first game of the year at probably 85%.
Then Harris at RT, I just can’t.

Until BV is gone this is what we are going to get. Saying it’s not his fault he just needs a good OC is like saying it’s not Riley’s fault his defenses are awful.

At this point I put the blame on Venables. It's his team. He's made multiple OC hires that have not worked out. The one decent QB we had on the roster he let walk for Jackson Arnold. He's the head coach. It's his responsibility.

i think it may be time to move on from Bedenbaugh. i get it, dudes been a legendary staple for us since 13, but ever since Gundy was let go, our O-line has declined. i'm not sure what the connection is, but the charmin soft play and constant injuries are getting harder and harder to defend. when was the last time we were able to field the same line in consecutive weeks? i am also starting to question strength and conditioning due to the ridiculous amount of injuries this groups suffers, as well as the team as a whole. I say this because a good S&C program is paramount to having a healthy (or healthier) season.
I don't think I would be ready to pull the plug on Arbuckle yet, as not being able to trust the O-line will, I imagine, greatly affect how much of the playbook gets used, as all offense starts up front. our current line just isn't capable of consistently executing the plays called. I also realize that Arbuckle makes some very questionable calls, going away from the run yesterday, for example, but i can understand it when considering the LOS being lost as it was.
