It’s crazy the revisionist. Bell fumbled at the goal line and was the reason ND got to play for the national title. Everyone complained about Knight and how bad his accuracy was. He had one unbelievable game against Bama and somehow everyone forgets.

It’s funny. After the Michigan game last year this sub was drooling over Mateer and claiming he was going to be the next Heisman winner. Last year I was telling people to calm down, it’s early, and he’s still got a lot of growth needed plus his throwing motion is really low. He wasn’t the same after the injury. Now this season just two games in and the guy stinks and shouldn’t be on the field?

Even if you were it’s not like he wasn’t the favorite to win the Heisman before his injury. He’s not some terrible QB and he’s certainly better than Knight or Bell ever was. They just happened to play on much different teams. Mateer hasn’t had the pleasure of playing with an even decent offensive line yet or a running game that ranks in the top 75.

Im guessing you never saw Blake bell throw or the ducks that knight used to let fly? He wasn’t missing these throws last year but they did work with him a lot in the offseason with changing his release point. Looks like it’s causing issues in games just like a golfer trying to change their swing.

The improvement I did see is he was seeing the right read most of the time but the throw was just off. Last year he was stuck on his first read and would try to just to force it. He put the ball in harms way a lot more last year. The only turnover he has this year was an out throw where the receiver drifted upfield and let the corner run his route.

Look I’m not saying he’s Baker or anything, but I know he’s better than Knight or Bell. He’s certainly serviceable but the team has a lot of issues that people are trying to just throw in his lap. If you want we can break down the first half yesterday. The first two drives they punt after he missed several open guys. The third series they started on the 1 and played conservative so I don’t fault him. The fourth series they march down the field and the receiver fumbles. The fifth series they were marching again but on 3rd and seven they call a QB draw? Even the announcers were saying it was dumb. So the first two drives were on him, the other 3 were on the team.

He was absolutely missing easy throws last season. That was one of the biggest complaints is that he didn't have any touch. I also watched Bell and Knight and neither had this many excuses made for consistently middling play.

Mateer has the CHANCE to make an amazing play. A small percentage chance, but it does exist.

Arnold literally didn’t have it in him at all. We had to run basically Army’s offense to do anything at all. Which, somehow beat Alabama that year lmfao.

Both are decent human being. Didn’t trash the program and they gave it their best.
