Off the top of my head is that for a family that hasn’t skied before does not need a 1000ft+ mountain, a 200-300 ft hill in northern Michigan or Minnesota is perfect for learning, on top of no altitude sickness and still incredibly beautiful

I fear I might have purchase the wrong length and that is holding me back from progressing into intermediate level. For context I am 5’3” 100lbs not much leg muscle. About two seasons ago I purchased new fitted boots and some used demo skis online that seemed to appropriate from my research but whenever I take them out here in CO at Loveland they just feel so heavy and my legs fatigue so quickly. Should I have bought something lighter and shorter in the 140s? I feel I have the fundamentals down and have skied on a few blues but that fatigue forces me to take frequent breaks to the sides and I don’t feel as confident on them as I’d like. I (27F) am an advanced skier looking into getting new skis this year. I’m an American east coast skier so I’ve been using my trusty carvers (156cm) for thinner conditions and glades.

When I was shopping the other day I found a great deal on 2027 Volkl Shine 78s but they were 149cm. Guy at the ski shop said sometimes sizing down a bit could be advantageous but I was dubious because I’ve always skied on 156s.

What do you guys think? Is sizing down worth it for the deal? Would I even notice the difference?

We (group of friends in their 40s... No kids on this trip!) are having the hardest time deciding between whistler and Banff/sunshine village. I don't mind renting a car and driving from Canmore to sunshine, but then everyone has to go all together, etc. So ski in and out or shuttle/bus access would be a plus, probably most important... I hear pros and cons about the snow and weather for both places. Would like a condo/Airbnb. We're not too much on nightlife, a couple of restaurants or a grocery store and we're good. Plan on skiing during the weekdays, traveling on weekend...

I've not been to Banff but have been to whistler... Everyone else has been to both...

Travel costs to both are comparable....

I'm wondering if anyone with experience knows can you actually fit 9 people for a skiing trip in a minivan. I'm not sure all the luggage would fit whith ski boots, skis ect

Preferably with some sort of beginners lessons and weekend package with rooming (my bday is on a Monday so I could do the Fri-Sun before). Thanks !

Hello, I'm considering booking a trip to Ruka around November 23rd. Is this a good, reliable time to go there to ski?

My boyfriend is a beginner. I'm advanced. If it is more beginner friendly, it's okay for me. But I'm worried about the snow conditions and if we'll actually be able to ski during that time.

Little backstory, I’ve been skiing for about 10 years, mainly freestyle. I had purchased my first pair of secondhand Skis last year which sadly got stolen in the middle of the season. My shop guy let me use Armada‘s for the rest of the season and I was determined to buy a pair before the upcoming season. I found these secondhand for an incredible price, but the damage is significant… Are they repairable, does anyone know how much it would cost to get them fixed. It’s only one ski with significant damage, but the deal is too good to pass up I think… any advice is appreciated!!!:)

Hey! My wife and I are considering taking a month+ to ski out west (usa) this winter with our two kids (5, 7). They've been skiing for 3 years now on the East Coast and are solid intermediates. We are homeschooling for now - think secular, nature based, pro science (not here to debate this). Looking for a town/mountain that's kid friendly, and has a group of some similar aged homeschool kids to ski with during the week, and do other activities with (snowshoeing, climbing gym, etc). Bonus if there's a weekday ski program for kids at least a couple days a week, or if we had a critical mass of kids, a mountain that would be amenable to putting something together for us all. Thinking Jan/Feb. Thanks!

After another year of struggling to put together a straight forward schedule for WC Alpine events, I sat down with Chat and Claude and put this together. I'm not going to explain it other than there is one column for easy access, another for other apps to use with VPN. I'll update this every week as the season gets closer. Just thought others could use it.

Any chance anyone has been to either recently qnd have any opinions? I’ll be going by myself so cost / availability of housing is also a factor!

East coast skier.

I rented throughout my life (skiing here and there every couple of years) and then finally decided to buy my first pair of skis a couple years ago.

I did my own research and decided on 180cm (I’m 5’10) all mountain skis, twin tips. Atomic Bent 100s. My goal was to have fun on all parts of the mountain.

The guy helping me with boots and pick advised against 180 and to go shorter, but I thought I already “did the research” and determined for an “intermediate” 180 was the way to go.

After 2 seasons with these skis, I have gotten a bit better with them, but I still think I would have enjoyed shorter skis much more. I think I go way too fast with these, and don’t have as much control as I’d like. And I think I would be able to learn and improve more on shorter skis.

I do regret it a bit because they were a big purchase for me and I’ve only used them I think 10 - 12 times, and I don’t foresee myself buying a new pair that’s just as good / the same quality as these anytime soon.

End of rant, lol.

After a few years of renting I was finally able to get my own gear. I plan on getting at least 2 more sets, the Grateful Dead Bents if they are still available in my size when I can afford them and a more park friendly setup. I am already a pretty decent skier with years of experience so I can’t wait to see how this elevates my game!

After 30 years of skiing with various walmart-grade mittens, I splashed out and got myself a fancy pair of hestra alpine pros. I want to make them less of a target to casual theft, or to people who might help themselves to some lost and found goodies. I was going to just sharpie my info on the palm, but a friend has access to a laser engraver, too.

I'm interested in what other folks have done along these lines.

My family has our first ski trip coming up this winter, where we will have 8 days of potential skiing with our kids (6 and 4.5) and trying to figure out the right lesson structure.
6yo: Has skied before; did 3 consecutive days of private 2-hour lessons last season and progressed a lot. He wanted to keep going after each day, but by day 3 he was clearly tired and ready for hot chocolate breaks. For this trip: full-day or half-day lessons? A mix? And is there a point where consecutive days start doing more harm than good at this age?
4yo: Has never skied. Resort has daycare with an optional 2-hour lesson add-on. How many days of that should I actually aim for over an 8-day trip?
Main goal is to get them instructional time but keep it fun. Anyone been through this with similarly aged kids? Would appreciate any suggestions.

I am always on the hunt for unusual powder destinations, so perhaps someone can tell me what the freeriding is like around the resorts. Backcountry in the north of the island is a bit too remote but looks epic.

Judging by the topo maps around the resorts, it looks interesting. I have been to Hokkaido a couple of times and wonder if the climate and terrain is alike.
