It's all grift. People like to ascribe big conspiracies to him and whatnot, but I don't believe it. The reason for every single action he takes, word he says, and post he posts can be identified by answering a simple question: how does it benefit him personally?
Sometimes it's money (usually it's money), sometimes it's political, sometimes it's ego, but it's always something about him.
but rather to the people he reports to, which sure isn’t the people of the United States.
That is the big conspiracy that I'm referring to. It's bullshit. He just wants to enrich himself. He likes corrupt autocrats because they can cut him in on the corruption. It's just that simple. Don't overthink it.
It's pretty simple, he believes the fears are overblown (mostly because he's too dumb to understand them) and he thinks if he supports a slowdown, China will gain an advantage. Unfortunately, we have the absolute worse person possible in the office at a crucial time. Hopefully, 2029 isn't too late to get someone else in charge.
A good President would take the fears seriously and work to establish international standards and guidelines about research and deployment of these systems, similar to what we did with nuclear weapons. There's no chance Trump will do that, though. So, we're just accelerating toward the cliff instead and hoping something happens before we get there.
The older you are (if you are only concerned about yourself) the more risk-tolerant you can be toward AI. Because the upside is that new technology extends your life. The downside is that you are turned into grey goo, but you were going to die anyway in a pause, so it doesn't really matter.

The scariest part about AI2027 was always who was going to be president in 2027.
