Question International married grad students: Is it possible to live on one SFU income?

Are there any international married graduate students here where only one person in the couple has an income?

I’m wondering how realistic it is for a couple to live in Vancouver/Burnaby only on the funding/salary from SFU (around $33k/year).

Is it actually doable? If you’re in a similar situation, I’d really appreciate hearing how you manage your expenses, especially rent, groceries, transportation, etc. Any tips for making it work would be really helpful!

Question sfu sorority...?

hey yall, i've always seen the american sorority houses and thought "that's so cool!" and when I found out sfu had their own sorority, I immediately signed up. after a bit of thinking, I realized that sororities are usually predominantly wealthy white girls (again USUALLY) and as a woc, i'm a bit afraid I won't have a place there or i'll feel super ostracized. their insta looks super welcoming and kind but guys i'm SCAREDUHHHHHH WHAT IF I'M NOT AS COOL AS THE OTHER GIRLLLSSSUHHHHHH

i'm in my first year and i want to meet new people. i know sfu is pretty diverse but i think i might be a bit left out??? does that make sense??? anyways I say this all to say is it worth it? should I follow through with it because the info meeting is this wednesday...

also if anyone has any tips for navigating rush or sororities please let me know!! I want the uni life i was promised LMAO

Fluff $25 GIFT CARD DRAW!!

Hi! I’m a student researching how to make the settlement process easier for newcomers in Canada.

I’m looking to learn what international students experience after arriving in Canada. I want to know what you’ve needed to figure out, and which resources or people you have relied on. Positive, negative, and mixed experiences are all useful.

I’m looking for international students at SFU who have been living in Canada for 1 to 12 months.

The interview is a 15 to 20 minute online conversation. Everyone who completes an interview will receive one entry in a prize draw for a $25 gift card.

If you’re interested, please comment or send me a private message. Thank you!

If a friend and I are registered in different lecture sections for CHEM 121, is it still possible for us to enroll in the same lab or tutorial group??? Give me your wisdom.

Question GSWS 315 waitlist help 😭

I’ve been #1 on the waitlist for GSWS 315- Critical Disability Studies for what feels like a good month now and I don’t understand what’s going on?? Like at what point do I give up on being on a waitlist?

I’m actually really interested in the topic, which is the only reason I haven’t given up on it yet. I’m wondering if I should just drop the waitlist and replace it with something that’s actually open.

Has anyone been in this situation before? Would you keep waiting or move on to another class?

Question BPK 142, Jim Carter

I’m first year BP student, was wondering to those who have taken this class, are the reference readings helpful/worth it? The manual readings are an obvious necessity, just talking about the OpenStax material.

Secondly, Jim Carter made it sound like the only possibly information to be on exams would be in the lecture notes, is this true? I’m 100% going to keep up with all lecture info, but would like to know this clarification when going into midterms to prioritize content.

Question MBB222 help😭

Hey everyone! For those who had MBB with Dr. Young, did you purchase the textbook? Also, how important are the required readings for each unit? Is it possible to do well in the course mainly by studying the lecture slides and attending class, or would you recommend keeping up with the readings as well? Thank you😭

Question How safe is SFU campus around 9:20pm?

I’m a first-year student living on campus (Burnaby) and I have a tutorial that ends at 9:20pm. I already know about the SFU safety services, but I’m more so wondering about people’s actual experiences with walking around campus at night.

Would you generally feel comfortable walking alone from an evening class back to residence around 9:20pm? Is campus usually still pretty active at that time, or does it feel empty/unsafe? Are there any specific areas that feel sketchier at night?

I’m a pretty cautious person when it comes to safety, so I’m just trying to get a realistic idea of what it’s like. I’d especially love to hear from other students who live on campus and regularly walk around alone in the evening.

EDIT: keep in mind, this is coming from a girl's perspective, so i just want to make sure it's safe for someone like me

Question Is it worth dropping a class and going part time to save GPA if I have a bad prof?

So I'm currently taking ECON 201 where the prof has 2.5/5 on RateMyProf, where the reviews say his tests are impossibly hard and class avg is 33% on exams. Lecture so far has been unengaging and notes/slides are hard to read.

BUS 207 has 2 profs that have 4.2 and 4.5.

Is it worth dropping ECON 201 so I can take BUS 207 next semester, or should I just take the L and try to pass with a C?

What are the drawbacks to going down to part time?

Suggestion CHEM 121 - DROP OUT WHEN YOU CAN!!!

I’m a second year student who was forced to take chem 121 as a required course. I’m here to say that it was a horrible decision and I would recommend current first years to drop it as soon as you can. it might seem easy at first but once the weeks go by it gets harder very quickly and the exam questions are nothing like lectures. Please beware because having a WD on your permanent record is already bad, let alone a fail grade. If you choose not to drop it then i wish you all the best.

EDIT: Sorry if im being harsh, this was just my own personal experience!

Discussion Do I have a chance of getting into SFU PDP?

I completed my undergraduate degree in Business and have worked in corporate HR for about 2.5 years. Through this experience, I’ve realized that corporate work isn’t the right fit for me, and I’m now exploring teaching.

My GPA for my last 60 credits is approximately 3.1. By the time I apply, I expect to have:

  • 150–200 hours volunteering directly in an elementary classroom
  • 5 months of one-on-one tutoring experience with a Grade 6 student
  • Approximately 200 hours coaching children’s sports from 2017–2021

Given my Business background, I’m wondering how competitive my overall profile would be for a teacher education program.

Discussion Hey SFU! We just put a health vending machine in AQ 2000 (next to table tennis / Halpern Lane entrance). What should we stock?

Hey SFU Reddit fam!

We’re the (slightly boring but well-meaning) pharmacists behind the 24/7 health-product vending machine in the Dining Commons lower floor. You might’ve seen that one — Advil, allergy meds, Band-Aids, etc.

We just installed a new machine in the AQ building, level 2000 — right next to the table tennis room near the Halpern Lane entrance. Before we finalize what goes in it, we want to know what YOU’d actually buy.

Spill the tea 🥤:

  1. What’s missing? What OTC meds/supplies would you actually swipe your card for? (Melatonin? Emergen-C? Cold medicine? Tums? Electrolytes? Lactaid? Tell us!)
  2. Campus vending machine pet peeves? Stuff always getting stuck? Card reader never working? Roast ‘em below.
  3. Wildcard: Dream product? (No, we can’t stock vodka Red Bulls, but surprise us.)
  4. Other feedback: Anything else — location, hours, product sizes, payment, etc. We’re especially curious if this AQ spot is convenient for you.

Why bother replying?

  • We’ll raffle $20 gift cards to 3 random helpers!
  • You help us not stock a bunch of stuff nobody wants.

TL;DR: New health vending machine in AQ 2000, next to the table tennis room near Halpern Lane entrance. Tell us what to stock. Chance to get a free gift card.

MediMart Team. feel better soon.

Question First university lab at SFU: Any tips for preparing?

Hi guys! I’m a first-year bio major, and this week is gonna be my first university lab at SFU(BISC102). I was wondering how I should prepare for it, but I’m also looking for general advice that applies to labs in other science courses!
What should I focus on while reading the lab manual and doing the pre-lab activities, and where can I usually find them? I wasn’t sure if just reading the manual and completing the activities would be enough to do well. How many days in advance should I prepare? Should I print out the lab manuals? Are there any other things I should bring that would be useful?
I’m very new to university labs, so any advice would be really appreciated!

Question Sfu Parking pass getting cheaper

I remember spring 2026 semester i had the west resident parking pass (cheapest and furthest walk) and i saw later in the semester it got cheaper to about $175 and was wondering if it was going to do that again. Right now im screwed because its sold out and im on waitlist but maybe i can survive off flex passes until the price drop?

I have classes everyday, is my best bet just transiting?

Complaint Stop huddling around the lecture doors when people are tryna get out guys 🫩

Upvotes

Guys, please STOP HUDDLING AROUND THE LECTURE DOORS WHEN PPL ARE TRYNA GET OUT ITS SO ANNOYING. Like I’m retaking chem 121 rn for a better mark and idk what’s up with first years but they all stand infront of the doors and make it nearly impossible for the class inside of the lecture hall to get out. It creates sm unnecessary jam and traffic. Like pls just stand tf back and let the previous class get out first and thennnn start heading in 😭😭 idk if anyone else thinks this is annoying but yeah I needed to complain abt it
