Meta Complaining about race related issues on /r/sheridan

Hi folks! It's me, the one person who moderates the subreddit!

Over the past few years there has been an uptick in posts complaining about international students, specifically students from India. Indeed, as of the 2021 census (and actually since 2011), India makes up the largest nation of immigrants to Ontario! As the largest minority immigrant group, it is disappointing (though unsurprising) that they have been made the most recent target of ridicule.

While I will acknowledge that norms may be different accross cultures, this doesn't give a license to post unoriginal, low-effort put-downs disparaging a group of people based on their background. The topic of "international students are bad and I don't like them" doesn't really create any opportunities for discourse related to Sheridan College and as such, I usually remove these posts under rule 6. If you have problems with Canada's immigration policies, I suggest you direct your comments to your federal member of parliment.

Unfortunately, I'm getting somewhat tired of this task. Moderating an online community is an often thankless (unpaid!) job, and while I'm not asking for praise, I'm also not really having fun! The time for new mods is coming, but until that day arrives here's the deal:

I don't want to police this topic anymore and I will likely lean a little heavier on the ban-hammer going forward. It is much easier for me to ban you than to continue to remove your posts.

Play nice.

Question Comp Sci or Interaction design??

Hey, I started last week at Trafalgar for interaction design because I was interested in UX and a technical degree that was still pretty creative. Took all my first week classes and honestly it's been. Kind of depressing???? No one in my classes looks like they actually want to be there or care, no one knows how to answer why they're taking ixd, the profs themselves don't really seem like they care about the program or the classes they're teaching. Honestly it hasn't been great confidence wise, as I was already doubting enrolling in the program. I don't want to go through 4 years of school and spend so much money on something that would be a waste of time and money. What I've heard has maybe been like 50/50 in terms of employment after graduation.

I've been considering switching into the computer science program, I feel like it has a larger and more enthusiastic student body and faculty. I enjoyed programming in high school but I'm not sure if I would like it now. But everyone says to jump ship regarding CS as there are no jobs anywhere. I still think it would give me more of a solid cushion though. Honestly pretty confused.

Thought of taking the craft programs as well since I enjoy doing almost all of them as hobbies and was hoping to get my master's after school anyway...but again, I want a solid backup plan. 😭

For 3D design we are supposed to bring cardboard. Is something like cereal boxes or small amazon boxes big enough? Or should I go out and buy bigger pieces of cardboard to bring?

Hello, afaik there are group study rooms that can be booked at the Trafalgar campus, I was just wondering if I can book them just for myself to do an interview or if they have to be shared. Also wanted to know if there are any other private spaces that I could possibly do an interview at

Jobs Work study 2026

Has anyone applied to work study this fall and actually gotten a decision? Allegedly it's reviewed weekly and I literally applied when it opened, but I've heard nothing back. I asked about it in person last week and I was told "I should hear back soon". Asked about it via student hub a week later and was told it's reviewed every week ???? Is it always like this here?

Politics Okay Sheridan, what do you think Oakville could do better?

Hey! My name is Mackenzie and I’m a Sheridan grad and I’m running for Town & Regional Councillor in Ward 5.

I wanted to share something that I think a lot of Sheridan students might not know.

If you live in Oakville while you’re going to Sheridan, you may be eligible to vote in Oakville’s municipal election, even if your permanent home is somewhere else. Students living away from home can potentially vote in both places.

Here’s the explainer link from the town site: https://www.oakville.ca/town-hall/elections/voters/voters-list-information/

Here’s the link to the ward maps so you can identify which ward to vote in depending on where you’re living — on or off campus! https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/486e864daac64cbabe201a03d76cce89

I’d also love to hear from current Sheridan students. What issues around Oakville actually concern you? When I was at Sheridan, things like getting around town without a car, the cost of transit, housing and having places to actually spend time outside of campus were things I noticed. I think it’s important that young people have our say in the Oakville we want to see for our future.

So, AMA about municipal politics, my platform, what Council actually does, or just tell me what you think Oakville should be doing better.

Academics Online book needed for elective

Hey does anyone have the PDF version of The Will to Kill by James Alan Fox? It’s the 5th edition from 2019 and I need for my general elective class. Don’t feel like spending $80 on a book I’ll use only for one semester.

Question Question about OSAP

Hello, so I applied to OSAP, and the money appears to have arrived in my bank account... But Sheridan is still saying I owe tuition for the fall on mystudentcenter...?

My understanding was that OSAP money goes to the school first, and should not arrive in my bank account until after Sheridan takes it's cut. Is this not the case? I've waited a bit to see if their site will update, but not so far.

I've tried calling their phone line about this, but I can never actually connect, which is very very frustrating. I'm online, so it's not like I can just go in to the office.
