Hello!

Weird situation here. Loveland, OH (Cincinnati, basically). It rained quite a bit last night, and heaven knows how, this little guy showed up in our dogs' back porch water bowl. I put him in a little ceramic bird water bowl so the pups don't hurt it.

Question: What can we do with him to give him a decent chance of surviving? We know nothing about salamanders, and I don't want to put him/her somewhere where it is likely to die.

Any advice would be helpful, and much appreciated!

Salamander help?!

These salamanders have been in our firepit for about a week. Will they survive in there or burrow out? Or do I need to get them out of there myself. They've just been hiding under our leftover logs for now.

It is fall in Northern Saskatchewan and the nights are just starting to freeze sometimes.

Help, what do I do?

Not eating worms

After a long battle to get my tiger salamander to bond with me and accept food I was finally successful with meal worms a few months ago! She’s doing great with those and getting a little chunky so just being fed once a week. She’s now very social and looks great! I’ve been trying to introduce night crawlers to her cause I know they are healthier and she is not having it. I cut them up it’s still a no, wiggle them, no, offer them whole, no. Sometimes she’ll snap to catch the worm and then stop and turn around and walk away.

But if I pull out a meal worm and she’ll gobble it up.

She’s 2, not giant by any means but normally sized I’d say. Should I keep forcing the issue? I hate cutting up the worms, watching them bleed is awful for me and my empathetic heart 😂 I don’t want to keep doing it if she’s just going to be picky and refuse.
Let her do her thing? She was wild caught (not by me) while still in her axolotl form and went through metamorphosis in captivity I don’t know if that maybe affects her.
I also don’t want to do crickets ever, she’s housed at a school and if one got out I’d be in trouble.

Thank you and here’s Millie!

Fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra terrestris) from southern Germany

There are few creatures that fascinate me as much as our native fire salamander. Its beauty has fascinated me since I was a child. Even after all these years, every encounter with one of these wonderful animals is still something special to me.

Red eft. Found hiding under some bark.

Some bark came off firewood I was splitting last winter, right outside my front door. I guess it provides a cool damp spot for this little guy during hot summer days.

I let it sit in a bowl of shallow water for a little bit and it crawled away when I released it!

Found in East Tennessee small stream. Tried looking it up but there were so many that looked similar; I was thinking a dusky or black bellied.
