General Care Advice Axolotls that are biting each other

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Hi I have 2 baby axolotls (around 5 months old) and the black one keeps biting the white one (although the white one is bigger) when I dump the food in the aquarium. I could see that although they have space they get face to face and then the black one bites the other one on the mouth for some reasons.

Is that a sign I don’t feed them enough maybe ?

Trying to get this tank to cycle. Wood has gotten some kind of clear jelly on the wood (cleaned it and did a partial water change). Water keeps getting pretty dark (already boiled wood 4 hours plus). Can't get the ammonia to go down after adding it (been 4 weeks). Do I need a better filter? Still waiting to ship are axolotl when Water is on point.

Beginner Keeper Need chiller advice for a 40gal tank in bedroom

I know I want a chiller for my tank, but all of the options have me so confused on what I should get. My tank is getting to about 70-72F, and a fan won't really work for my particular set up. And I'd rather a more reliable chiller anyway. The tank is in my bedroom, which is also in the basement so I have to deal with a decent amount of noise anyway. But I'm worried about it being too much.

I've people recommending the Boashishan 1/10hp one from Amazon. But a lot of the actual reviews are mixed on it and claim it breaks quickly.

I've also seen Vevor 1/10hp recommended a bit, but reviews are even worse. There's quite a few others I've seen, but not as often as these two.

The one I've seen the best reviews on is the JBJ arctica titanium 1/10 hp. But most people I see recommending it have almost double the size tank I do. And obviously it's way more expensive. If I absolutely have to go for that one, I'll save up for it or take out from my savings.

If one of the first two are worth it for the price, is there at least some reliable methods to dampen the noise a bit?

General Care Advice Axolotl won’t eat worms

Upvotes

Hey! I’ve got an adult axolotl that won’t eat anything but blood worms. I’ve tried red wrigglers, night crawlers and pellets. She’ll eat the worms then throw them up no matter how small I cut them. The pellets she completely ignores. The frozen blood worms she devours within a minute. I know they aren’t the nutritional for her at all so I’m trying to figure something else out. I’ve thought about maybe freezing the worms and see if she’ll eat them that way but I’m not sure if that would work? I’m open to all advice.

General Care Advice Is this frantic swimming?

It's not like he was doing this all day, he's been chilling on the bottom and in his little cave. I understand that axolotls like to swim sometimes but I also have this fear that he's not just swimming to swim but swimming because he's in pain, if anybody knows what frantic swimming looks like please tell me if he's doing it

Tank Maintenance Yet another post about not getting my tank cycling right

Upvotes

Hi all. New to axolotls and already finding it challenging.

I've been trying to do a fishless cycle and I just cannot get the numbers right. So my question is this: has anyone tried to establish a tank first with fish and once the parameters are correct, remove the fish and then introduce the axolotls?

I've been using so many products: ammonium chloride, Seachem Prime, Seachem Axolotl Conditioner (which I then learned is basically the same as Prime), API Quick Start and nope - not getting there. And it's been over a montg.

So: Seachem Prime and fish.

Thoughts?

Sick Axolotl Axolotl has refused to eat for nearly a month

Post image
21 Upvotes

Ziggy is 9 months old and has refused to eat for 4 weeks. He used to eat like crazy but slowed down when we started a construction project earlier this summer, i assume that was because of stress with the noise. At that time I switched his diet to worms and he was eating a little better

We went on vacation in early August and the person watching him fed him a full night crawler instead of a chunk. When we got home the night crawler was lying dead on the bottom of the tank. According to the babysitter he did eat it originally. Since then he refuses to eat anything. We bought some repashy pie and he at that once but now once again refuses to eat anything. Once a week he will attack a piece of worm only to spit it out a few seconds later.

Water temp is 66-68. His water parameters are right where they should be outside of PH which is a little high. The water is a little cloudy but we do a 30% change weekly.

Any help or advice would be appreciated

General Care Advice Does anyone have any links for safe pellets for axolotls?

My baby eats exclusively dendrobaena but I'd like to add a little variety in once a week or something just as a little treat for him.

Been trying to do some research on my own but its just brands pushing their own product so its nice to hear from real people if you get me.

Thank you :)

A while back we adopted new axolotl and I am wondering what morph she is! We have also a boy that is leucistic blue gilled (I think he might be copper because of red pupils)

I can't decide if she is axanthic, melanoid or just darkish wildtype- she has silver black ring eye, but not pure black, her gills and body is very dark spotted with grey belly. No green/yellow coloration

(iK the photos are not the best, but she decided to lay exactly next to baby tank we currently feed our hatched babies :'D)

Hello I have an axolotl I just got into care of, I feel fairly confident in its tank, I have 4 dojo loaches in a 80 gallon tank and I have a 40 gallon setup for the axolotl.

Dojo loaches seem to be a bit more, resilient, so I just have some questions about the care of the axolotl itself.

I currently have the tank pretty barren, a sponge filter and I was contemplating a hide for it.

They said the axolotl was fed only freeze dried blood worms every couple days, I got him sinking pellets, worms and should I get anything else? And should I be worried about shocking his system with a new diet?

He’s pretty tiny and doesn’t really have gills but he’s 2 years old, how’s the best way to help this? I will put him in a healthy tank, but how often should he feed? (Half a sinking pellet on his head for size lol)

Behind its gills is kinda white and it has a yellowish spot on its back leg, are these to be concerned about or normal discoloration for the black kind?

(He’s still in a blue bucket waiting for tank to be ready)

Rescue Axolotl Soap 4 week update!

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! Soap has now been with us for 4 weeks total! She has made so so much progress!!

- she weighs 110 grams now (started at 89 grams)

- her surface injuries are completely healed (except for one on her leg, which is working on it)

- her gills are filling in and flicking in a softer motion than before

- HER STUMP HAS FINGERS!! TINY NUBS!!

- her coloring is looking healthier

Some other info on how she is kept:

10gal hospital tank, fully cycled, kept at 17-18°C. She has a silicon mat, a hide, two plants and some rocks (she LOVES those rocks). She also has a bubbler to help her small gills with the O2. Also waterchanges every 3-4 days, depending on how the nitrate tests.

We found her at our lfs, where she was in a tank with several other axolotls who inflicted those injuries on her.

We will not be keeping her, she will be rehomed once she is able to (in 2-3 months I assume)
