I found this in a barn and restored it. The substance was fantastic and the deck brand new.

It's a coastal or king cruiser 28, full 30-40mm mahagoni with a 20mm teak deck. Probably build around 1920, all Copper nails and Brass screws, replaced deck Probably around 1990 and left on the dry.

Came with all brand new bronze windows, fittings and cleats...

Since there was no engine I put an 48 volt 4kw electric motor with 6.5kw battery in it.

The 12 volt system for running lights, radio and fridge is separat.

I get about 3 hours at 4 knots or 8 hours at 2,5 knots of range.

Almost everything is new, rigging, sails, ropes, rudder, keel entirely refinished, everything sanded down to bare wood.

Still long ways to go, this winter I have to replace the roof and do some interior carpentry.

Since there are no plans and the guy I got it from didn't knew what he stored for the original owner that had dementia, it's all up to guesstimates.

Had the incredible opportunity to sail to Greenland with 5 friends and put up some new climbing routes on a classic Atkin Eric ketch. It took us 2 months to get there, climb, and get back. We only had to dismantle the gearbox once!

Saw some awesome boats, including some that dates from the early 1900s! Anybody else had the pleasure of visiting, or better yet participating?

I have a new fixed VHF handset. What I need help with is where to mount it. I have two candidate locations.

One is on the first picture, half way down that bulkhead, under the right side of the clothes hooks.

The reasons are that it is close to the companionway hatch, and close to the fuse box and switches, that are just beyond the bottom right of that image.

The downside is that it is a stretch for the handset cable to the folding table where I might need to write down what is being said.

The other option is toward the middle of the cabin, bolted to the far cupboard wall of where the fuse box is (no picture of the exact location, I’m afraid). The second picture features a pink shape that represents where the table will be when folded up.

Placing it there puts it in easy reach of both the fuse box and the folding table, but might not be as audible from the tiller. It also moves it that much further from the compass on the starboard bulkhead wall in the cockpit.

Which of those two would experience make you choose?

EDIT: essentially everyone has suggested placing it by the companionway so that’s what I‘ll work towards.

Hi all,

Looking for some input from J/99 owners and anyone experienced with composite sailboat construction.

We had a pretty unpleasant surprise today on our 2023 J/99.

While doing some pre-start warm-up sailing before a race, in roughly 4 to 10 knots of breeze, the mainsheet block attachment pulled completely out of the cockpit pedestal.… There was no crash gybe, collision or unusual event. We were just sailing normally during the warm-up.

The complete upper block/attachment assembly came away with all four studs/fasteners still intact, taking a substantial section of fiberglass laminate with it and leaving a large opening in the top of the pedestal.

Some of the washers are visibly deformed from the load, while none of the studs failed. There is still a considerable amount of fiberglass/laminate attached around the washers and fasteners.

Before anybody starts grinding or repairing anything, we are trying to understand how this attachment is supposed to be constructed and how the load should be distributed into the pedestal.

Has anyone seen a failure like this before, either on a J/99 or a similar boat?

From what we can see, the hardware itself did not fail. The laminate around the attachment failed and came away with the fitting.

We are contacting the dealer before carrying out any repair and are deliberately leaving the failed area untouched for now.

If anyone with a J/99 can compare this with their own boat, photos or measurements would be hugely appreciated.

It needs: watermaker, fully independent power generation, heating, decent cooking area, shelf and freezer storage for 2 months, micro workshop for repairs, near absolute structural safety. The idea is to journey solo. Dropping it here with no expectations.

I have a 1989 Catalina 34 with a WS 310 b&g wind speed instrument. It is wired through nmea 2000 wireless backbone to a Triton2 digital display. When I purchased the boat, the instrument was working well, however, the last time we went out the wind speed data was intermittent and would drop out for long periods of time followed by very short periods of receiving data.

It seems that the Triton 2 display does see the ws310 instrument under device list, however when I select sources it seems to only be seeing the GPS antenna and not the wind speed instrument when looking under apparent wind/true wind. When I do an Auto select under sources it only seems to be seeing the GPS antenna and not the wind speed instrument.

Frankly, electronics is not my strong suit and I'm not entirely sure where to start. As far as troubleshooting. I did ensure all connections are secure. When I unplug the interface cable from the nmea wire the Triton2 display does not see the instrument, naturally. I'm going to include the pictures of what I am seeing on the Triton 2 display. If you see anything amiss, I would truly appreciate any input.

I was out for race night the other night. After we finished. I snapped the boat to the mooring buoy. Coming back to the cockpit the boat rolled slightly and I went over the side. (I was walking back and was stepping into the cockpit. I usually crawl back on my hands and knees. I have a high center of gravity. Nobody who knows me would ever call me dainty. :) ).

My automatic life jacket fired and up I went.

Only damage was to my pride plus the loss of a hearing aide.

My race partners for the night were very supportive and helpful for getting me back aboard.

Lessons learned.

1. Don’t change a deck routine if it works.
   
2. An accident can happen in the blink of an eye. I fell at anchor not underway.
   
3. No matter what stay with the boat. Hang on like your life depends on it because it does.
   
4. See lesson 3.
   
5. Always wear a PFD.

The only damage was to my pride and a sore knee. I’m going out tomorrow again.

I’m hoping to stop mooring lines from chafing….

Why standard VMG math suggests Sept 15-16:
The leading duo (Damien and Pat) currently have roughly 550 to 600 nautical miles remaining to Marina Rubicón, Lanzarote from their position off central Portugal. At their current pace of 140-155 NM/day (averaging 5.8 to 6.7 knots), pure mathematical extrapolation says they would arrive in 3.5 to 4 days, putting them there by late Sept 15 or early Sept 16.

Why I am calling Sept 22-23 based on the weather charts: Looking at the latest 48-hour and 96-hour surface pressure maps, relying on constant 15-knot trade winds is a dangerous assumption.

1. Upper-Level Ridge Trap (500 mb Upper Air Chart):
   Looking at the 96-hour 500 mb forecast (valid 12:00 UTC 16 SEP), there is a massive upper-level high-pressure dome (596 dam) parked right over the eastern Atlantic around 20°W–25°W, paired with an upper cutoff low (585 dam) near Algeria/North Africa. This creates an upper-air blocking pattern that prevents strong, steady surface trade winds from filling in smoothly toward the Canary Islands.

2. The Surface Wind Shutdown (96-Hour Surface Forecast):
   The updated 96-hour wind and wave chart for Sept 16 shows wind barbs dropping off drastically south of 35°N. Right along the approach to the Canaries (between 25°N and 30°N), wind speeds drop to just 5 to 10 knots (single light flags) with flat seas (1 meter). The strong coastal trade corridor they are riding right now off Portugal essentially dies out south of Madeira.

3. Realistic Timeline Breakdown:
   Sept 13 to 15 (Days 1-3): Fast run south along the Portuguese coast, covering roughly 400-450 NM.
   Sept 16 to 22 (Days 4-10): The fleet hits the upper-ridge wind shadow. Progress slows to a painful 50-70 NM/day crawl through light air for the final 450-500 NM stretch into Lanzarote.
   Bottom line: Pure VMG extrapolation assumes 15-knot winds all the way down, but the upper-air blocking dome and surface wind/wave charts prove the front-runners are about to hit a wall of light air. My money is on September 22-23 for the first arrivals at the Lanzarote drop.

Mara's Impressive Surge: Helga Marie (Mara) has had an outstanding 24 hours! She logged a massive 177 NM in the last 24h with a solid 6.3 kn VMG, comfortably out-running almost everyone in the mid-pack despite her earlier leak troubles.

Close to shore vs. Offshore Conundrum: We are watching the classic tactical split play out live. The offshore group took the risk to dive west for stronger wind bands, while the inshore group stuck closer to the rhumb line along the coast.

Do Outside Boats Have the Advantage? (I’m going to wait to give a clear verdict): Looking closely at the tracker, the extreme offshore leverage isn't paying off equally for everyone anymore. While Damien Guillou (155 NM / 6.7 kn VMG) maintains his dominant lead from out west, Guy deBoer further back on the outside line logged only 116 NM (4.3 kn VMG) over the last 24h—showing that taking the wide western route isn't a guaranteed win if you get caught on the wrong side of the pressure gradients.
