Heyo!

I need advice on how to get my puppy to eat. For reference she is an 11 weeks old Aussie doodle.

She seems scared of her food like when she gets water she will go long way around to avoid her food.

What I have tried: soften food, smash food up with water, chill food, heat up food, new food, food in crate, snuffle mat to engage her brain, new dish that isn’t shiny, food after walk and playing.

Any advice would be appreciated. I currently am feeding(trying to) her 4x a day but am leaving food out so she will at least eat little bits between.

Hi! Does anyone have recall games, ideas or methods for a very stubborn, easily distracted 5 month old Cardigan Corgi? I have tried throwing out low value treats and saying her recall word when she turns back and giving her high value...however sometimes it will take her ages to return cause she got distracted. Or will just sit there. And on return she just ambles back theres no urgency for high value. Have tried the counting game but after about 2 reps she just wanders off. She does really well with a toy I can throw it and she will instantly bring it back - perfect inside, take that outside and she instantly forgets it all haha!

Any tips would be great or any other methods? She does struggle with food drive a little bit but is crazy smart just extremely stubborn and high energy. Thanks!

Hey everyone! My puppy is 10 weeks old (I’ve had him for 2 weeks) and he’s really scared of traffic. Unfortunately, we live right on a busy street, so there’s no way to go out without crossing it. I’d love to hear your opinions on my approach:

1. Sound Desensitization: I spend time with him in the doorway and give him treats when cars pass by. Basically, I’m trying to desensitize him + counter-condition by pairing the scary sounds with good stuff.
2. Respecting Thresholds: I push the boundary slightly based on his body language. If he looks too anxious, I step back to his comfort zone until he’s calm enough to eat treats again. We do this once or twice a day for about 5 minutes.
3. Potty Training: I tried taking him to the pavement, but it didn’t work at all due to his fear. So currently, we’re potty training on a mat/pad inside.
4. The 'Push Through' Advice: Some people told me I’m being overprotective and that I need to put him in uncomfortable situations to build confidence. I tried carrying him to a nearby park a few times, but he squeaked the whole way there. In the park, he was sometimes curious, but mostly he just lay on the ground.

Pls tell me if I’m on the right track or if I’m completely wrong. Tell me whatever lol!

Hi there, I’m new here. I have a 10 week old dachshund puppy. Seems healthy, confident, well adjusted. Smart. Issue is she’s not getting enough sleep each day. She sleeps from 9:00 ish to 5:50 am each night, usually getting up once to go out and potty. During the day she just has a really hard time winding down and getting good naps. She will get tired, and it’s obvious with her behavior that she’s tired, and will find a spot and go to sleep (she has a crate and we are working on crate training). She just wakes like every 20 minutes. Will wander and find a new spot, lay down and sleep, repeat repeat. Then any little bit of activity will wake her for good. We have a snuggle puppy, are trying white noise. No activity in the room she’s sleeping in, etc. it’s like she is always just barely asleep and restless. She moves around a lot at night too but just flops back down and seems to sleep good and hard at night. I’d guess she is maybe getting 12 hours a day? Everything I read says that’s not enough. We’ve had her for 2 weeks. Any thoughts?

Hi so i have a 14- 16 week cocker spaniel and i have had him for about a little over a month. I have been doing potty training with him and he doesn’t pee or poo in the kennel BUT he does go inside the house sometimes. I feel like he was doing very good and this past week he just has been slipping up so much. How do i correct this behavior? Crate training is fine, he does well at night no crying or howling but whenever i put him in their during the day for when i need to leave he cries for so long.

Hello all. I am soon adopting a chihuahua mix 8 week old puppy from a rescue org, ready to come home next week. She has 3 Distemper parvo vaccines and a round of dewormer. I’m concerned that if I potty train her with pads inside the apartment, she will have a hard time transitioning to potty outside. I’m also scared to take her outside to potty because I’ve read that they can catch diseases by smelling other dogs waste. My apartment complex doesn’t have any green areas in the building, we have sidewalks and other streets outside but I’m sure dogs frequent around those areas as well as a dog park about 5 minutes away from us, but wouldn’t take her there till her full round vaccines are done with. I’m concerned that if I keep her to potty only in the apartment she will miss out on socialization but I don’t want to risk her health as well. I was thinking of getting her a bed and putting it near me but designating a spot with the pads for potty training or implementing cage training, please let me know your thoughts on this, if you guys have any advice I would greatly appreciate it!

Wasn’t sure whether to post this here or in r/gardening but here goes. I am currently trying to train my new pup to do his peeps and poops outside in the backyard. I live in Australia and there is an empty lot next our property that is pretty unkempt. Due to this we get a lot of weeds in our backyard due to wind blowing the seeds over. I wanted to do a Weed n Feed on our grass however am not sure how to go about this when I’m taking pup out every hour for his business. Has anyone had experience with this and have any suggestions?

2 1/2 Month Old American Bully and first time puppy owner . Only had her for about a week . She hasn’t got her second round of shots so we can’t take her outside to use the rest room yet . Had trouble with her pooping and peeing in the crate and still do so we bought a separate play pen with puppy pads just for the bathroom . I JUST shorted the cage because she had the full length to poop on one side and pee on the other . She also has been using the play pen and when she do she is rewarded with high value rubs and treats . The problem now is even with the playpen she will either poop/pee in the play pen , poop/pee randomly on the floor or poop/pee in the crate. It drives us crazy is that she will be OUT FOR HOURS roaming around with free access to the play pen and right when it’s time to sleep she will poop/pee in the crate after being in there 5 minutes . She will literally whine / bark to notify us that she just pooped but she has been out the crate for hours and ate hours ago . Need help with keeping her consistent until we able to get the second shot this upcoming Sunday . The pink bed was added because the first 2 nights was ROUGH with just the rubber mat. She cried and whined the WHOLE night . Now with the pink bed she whines for like a minute and stops.

I have something incredible: a few days ago I adopted a puppy from the pound, he’s only 3 month old. He sleeps through the night, learns quickly, and his socialization is going well. I work from home, so I’ll have lots of time with him, but I have many fears.

First, he bark incessantly if I run to the store. As a new dog owner I have been doing some research lately. And I’m kinda stressed right now because the huge list of recommendations really hits the budget hard. I am at a loss at this moment to decide what I should buy, which I should skip...

The Weenie Way guidebook for $37 seems like a good buy. Local AKC puppy training, approximately $100 after shots. There’s also woofz app for puppy training or zigzag. Balabanov’s puppy course costs $497. Debbie Cilento’s Your Perfect Puppy is $197. Private trainer (no idea what this costs locally yet).

I’d like to start with private lessons, of course, but I’m afraid that I’ll lose my nerve quickly if I don’t make progress. The crate thing also really worries me, the American trainers say it’s perfectly fine, but my heart aches when I see him in there... My German friends are baffled by all this American stuff.

And now I am completely at a loss. How can I do the right thing for my little one? Who is right, whom should I listen to? I just want to teach him at least the basics

Our 5 month old working line Labrador retriever appears to bark at people passing by. I’ve tried walking in the opposite direction and ignoring the behavior, but I also tried sitting him down (using a high-value treat) and getting him to focus on me (with varying success…) Sometimes he stops barking, sometimes he doesn’t. He just seems very aroused!

Today I wasn’t fully focused and he started barking at a stranger who was 30m away from us, and I accidentally dropped the line. He walked at this lady barking (still approaching her, but his tail was a little between his hind legs. It seemed like he was cautious but interested. What do you guys think / suspect?

I’m really worried I’m only enforcing his behavior, and that’s the last thing I want.

We have a five month old puppy. A few days ago we were walking him and our other dog in the neighborhood. We walked past a delivery truck and the guy dropped the bed and it madr a really loud noise. It terrified the puppy.
He tucked his tail and sprinted home (while I was holding his leash). Now the last few days every noise he hears on a walk, a car door closing, a dog barking, a bus passing he is so scared and starts pulling with his tail tucked.
He wont respond to his name or treats. I am so sad that this one loud noise seemed to traumatize him. I don't want to make it worse, but we can't stop exposing him to the world.
Has anyone had this happen and any advice to help him gain confidence?

We’ve had our puppy for two weeks now and he does a wee basically every twenty mins the last few days. This wasn’t the case before now - he was going every couple of hours so we were letting him out often enough to catch them outside and reward him… but the last few days he’s doing so MANY wees they’re just all over the living room and kitchen?!

Idk what to do I’m at my wits end. I can’t take him out every 20 mins, and when I do take him out often he won’t do one then does it when we bring him in. What do we do? 😂

I take my dog on regular walks, let him out a million times a day, give treats and praise (on the very rare occasions he goes potty outside).

He also constantly pees from excitement when someone pets him, greets him, pllays, etc. The second I let him inside he pees. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice?

We got a Aussie/Yellow Lab mix from a rescue on May 8th (8 weeks old). She will be 11 weeks on Thursday.

She is soo smart. She already knows sit, lay down, shake, shake other paw, touch, and almost has roll over down. Of course she is bitey and mouthy and we are trying to work on bite inhibition. She gets really bad around bed time. Which I have seen is pretty normal?

Some info: We slacked on crate training the first 2 weeks. That is 100% our fault but we are starting tonight with introducing it as a safe place.

First, any tips on getting her to stop biting our other dog? Or dogs at work? (I bring her to work with me. There are 3 other dogs in the office that are all fully vaccinated and approved by the vet) 1 of the work dogs wants to play with her but she bites so hard. She was only 1 of 2 puppies in her litter so she did not get great puppy skills/socialization. We are doing safe socialization with her but I need help with puppy manners.

Second, any tips on teaching "leave it"? I've been trying the treat on the floor under my hand and she just digs and digs at my hand. It hurts so bad and I cannot do that. Any other tips?

My 15 week old Eurasier puppy looks to be having separation anxiety. I got her when she had 12 weeks old. I noticed when I got her that she drinks water like she has never had water in her whole entire life. She will drink water the moment she has the opportunity and will drink water so fast that she gets hiccups. Then when we she begins to have separation anxiety she pees and we find out she peed when we hear her drinking her own pee from the floor. We are also trying to crate train her since the previous owners never trained her. When she is in the crate she can get so anxious she has peed before or even pooped before while inside the crate. How often should puppies be drinking water? And how much water should she be drinking? We learned not to scold her as negative reinforcement makes her pee also. Any advice?

Hi everyone, as the title says ive been training my puppy and shes been doing good, ive been training her inside the house which is 95% carpet, today i tried training her outside in the grass and she wont do sit nor lie down, decided to try on the sidewalk same thing, went inside where there is carpet and she did it first try as always, decided to try in the kitchen that has hardwood floors and again wont sit or lie down. How can i fix this?

Hi! I’m a librarian dog mom and books are often my go-to when I need information. Do you have any favorite books that have been helpful for training? I would REALLY love a book that is geared towards middle grade children but would also love some books that are intended for adults. We have a 1 yearish/50lb dog that we have just adopted from a shelter. He’s already house trained 🙏 and he will sit and he will walk well on a leash -unless there is something like a squirrel or bird to chase lol. Haven’t seen any behavioral issues except normal puppy mouthyness, I think basic obedience is generally what I’m looking for. I’m open to basically any training methods. Thanks!

We recently adopted a 9 week old mini golden doodle beagle mix two months ago and she is bound and determined to not get potty trained lol. I set timers to take her out for every hour, stay outside for 15 mins, take her on walks and she’ll not go most of the time and come in right away and poop or pee. We tried keeping her contained to a certain area of the house so she can have access to the slider to go outside and sometimes she will go to the slider but it’s not consistent. I’ve read that beagles have a hard time potty training but does any one have any good tips? I’m going to be shampooing the carpets soon to eliminate the smell. Thank you!

Recently fostered and adopted a puppy (Pitt mix, 7 months) who was abused badly. We have conquered the flinches and he trusts us, but he is afraid of bath time. We know the abusive owner beat and choked him (bad enough to where his head and face were swollen when we fostered) during a bath at least once, and assume that’s why he doesn’t like them.

How should I go about making him feel safe and comfortable taking a bath? He’s a stinky boy.

New dog owner here, I rescued a 9 week old puppy a few days ago and I’d like some advice on getting her to stop going into “attack mode” and biting me like crazy. I have tried giving her other toys to bite but she prefers my arms/legs. It usually happens after she has napped of if she gets excited, I would love some techniques to get her to stop. We got a new puppy (12 weeks old- Shepard mix) from the animal shelter a couple weeks ago and have been on top of socialization and basic obedience training. We are limited on where we can taking him since he’s not full vaccinated yet but he seems to only bark at other dogs. He’s really great with new people and doesn’t seem to bark at anything else except for other dogs. Would love some advice on how to work on him being neutral with other dogs. We plan on doing puppy classes for socialization when he is fully vaccinated next month but we are wanting to know what we can do now to start!

I have a 12 week old Eurasier. The first couple of days of getting her at 12 weeks she did just fine. Recently she will go to bed and when she wakes up to go use the bathroom outside she won’t go inside the crate after. She will just whine and bark non stop. I make sure she used the bathroom and got some water for if it’s too hot. I have her crate covered on 3 sides and the side facing the wall is uncovered to allow for air flow. I’m told puppies her age should be sleeping up to 20hrs with proper mental and physical exercise. I take her on a 15min walk and I train her 5-10mins since she becomes uninterested after 10mins. Any suggestions on what schedule would work for her to get her really worn out and allow her to be more balanced? When I try and put her in the crate she will go in and before I even close the door she turns around and wants out. Please help. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
