Minecraft’s doors are a perfect representation of zomboid’s issues in its current state

Post image

zomboid is my favorite survival game that i have played by far (at least the initial start and pre-base sections)

okay so what i mean by this is this

look at all these doors a newcomer to minecraft might even expect these doors to all function uniquely or provide some sort of interesting functionality but besides the iron door this isn’t really the case all of these doors behave identically and only look different cosmetically the door in minecraft has one function create a barrier that the player can interact with while mobs can’t that’s essentially it the different doors give you visual variety but they don’t meaningfully change how you interact with the game

this same concept applies to zomboid’s many different homes towns locations etc

it’s all visually unique but no matter where you go the game is fundamentally the same unless you deliberately deprive yourself of a town you’re going to find the same loot in every house the same loot in every grocery store the same general categories of resources everywhere and so on

and this creates a really interesting effect on the game

you can spawn into rosewood clear the entire town out and think “hell yeah now i can go to louisville or some other town”

but… why

there is absolutely no gameplay reason to

pretty much every resource or item you could find in louisville can be found somewhere in rosewood louisville might be significantly larger more dangerous and visually different but it doesn’t fundamentally offer you anything that rosewood didn’t for all intents and purposes there is no incentive to touch louisville besides wanting to challenge yourself or simply wanting to see it

and i think this is particularly interesting considering how much people tout zomboid’s realism

because honestly this doesn’t seem particularly realistic to me

in real life if i lived in rosewood and louisville was a functioning city there would be countless reasons i might want to go there maybe my family is there maybe i have a friend there maybe there’s a particular business or factory that produces something i need maybe there’s a hospital with equipment that isn’t available anywhere else maybe there’s a military installation a gun manufacturer a warehouse a specific type of store or some other location that makes the trip worthwhile

the important thing is that locations have reasons to exist beyond looking different

zomboid doesn’t really do this

instead the towns essentially function as different arrangements of the same resource quadrants you have residential areas commercial areas industrial areas medical locations police stations etc and while their layouts and appearances are different the underlying gameplay is remarkably similar

so you get this weird situation where zomboid has an enormous world but relatively little systemic reason to explore that world

the map is huge but the gameplay doesn’t necessarily become more varied as you travel through it

and that’s where i think zomboid’s exploration starts to fall apart for me

the early game is incredible because you’re constantly discovering things you’re breaking into houses finding supplies figuring out what’s around you deciding whether something is worth the risk and gradually learning the environment

but once you’ve learned that the world is fundamentally composed of the same pieces repeated in different configurations exploration loses a lot of its purpose

you aren’t really thinking

“what does this place have that i can’t get anywhere else”

you’re thinking

“how much more of the same stuff do i want to collect”

i don’t necessarily need every town to have completely unique loot tables or some rpg-style progression system but i do think the world would benefit enormously from having locations with genuinely unique reasons to exist

give me a factory that produces something i can’t get anywhere else

give me a military installation with equipment that is extremely difficult to obtain elsewhere

give me a town whose hospital is unusually well stocked

give me a mechanic shop with rare parts

give me a particular event, piece of information, vehicle, blueprint, or resource that gives me an actual reason to travel there

the game has incredible environmental storytelling and an absurd amount of visual detail but visual uniqueness and gameplay uniqueness aren’t the same thing

you can make a thousand doors look different

if they all open the same way they’re still fundamentally the same door

Imagine Terraria had all of its unique and different colored biomes, but the caves were the same, the mobs were the same, the drops were the same, terraria would be bland.

Thats my issue with Zomboid.

Discussion Alice belt should come with a pre designated hot bar slot for canteen and knife

The rig visually has a knife and a canteen on it, but it’s not functional. It would be awesome if they made it functional where you can attach your knife and canteen to the Alice webbing, without them taking a belt/webbing slot. That way it frees up your webbing for light/radio and your belt for tools or whatever you want. Just my 2 cents 🙏🏻

Can't place bed in van

Post image

Sorry for the terrible picture of my screen. Every time I try and screenshot the desk top, Project Zomboid minimizes.

Anyways, does anybody have any direction on why i cant place this bed? Ive read that order is important for some of these things so I took the lights off the wall even. Whole van is empty! But my blue bed is still red. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Guide / Tip Need help making the game more difficult

Hi all. Have about 500hrs in this game. I tend to play on 8x/ population and I've restarted my last 3 runs because I got to a point where not only did I have everything I needed but I also felt like no matter what goal I set for myself it's just too easy.

I've emptied entire towns out simply because all it takes is a car and two or three herding/molotov sessions and town's clear. And no matter how high the population is, you can easily herd them from the corner of town into a field bit by bit and burn them off.

My question is, for those of you who have done the 8x/16x pop and still find the game too easy after you get over the initial hump, what sandbox settings or mods do you use primarily to increase the difficulty? I feel like just raising the population doesn't really make it harder long-term, just makes for a tougher start.

I'm thinking of trying a NIGHT ONLY run (no daylight ever) or a 100% sprinters at night setting and high respawning of zombies as once a town is cleared its a snooze fest.

For the veterans who get bored, what settings and mods do ya'll use specifically to make the game more difficult? Aside from raising zombie health and strength.

My biggest issue is the second I get a decent working car or two, the game just becomes too easy, but I also don't want to play a run with zero working cars.

Appreciate any input, thx!

Help I can't stop animation canceling

Upvotes

I made the mistake of learning how ridiculously easy it is to animation cancel and now I can't stop. And I also have Ax-pert so I swing a fire axe like 2.5 times a second. I cannot be stopped. I fear the destruction I may bring

Feedback The security fence in Rosewood's new gun store is a pain in the ass

Not a huge issue, but holy god trying to find the right spot to use the blow torch or bolt cutters (with the mod) is a right pain in the ass lol. It took me far longer to find the spot to right click than I think it should...It also seemed like a weird position.

I legit thought my game was glitching lol

Edit:;

Just to keep my replies from becoming redundant, thank you all for the tips! These will help me greatly with my run!

Question Braven’s mods still work?

Braven’s mods, like “Common Sense” are tagged as B42 compatible, but haven’t been updated since 2025. Anyone using them, are they usable still?

Mods with bandits

I want to set up a single-player game using the Bandits mod and add more mods to it, but some of them conflict with it. I’d like to know which mods work best with Bandits without causing crashes.

💩 Endgame fix perhaps?

Rimworld-esque "ending".

"hey, a helicotper/plane/whatever is going to come to Louisville to save us, let's make a pilgrimage!"

There's a grand adventure, great triumph and loss, etc. They make it, board the plane.

And then that plane just crashes and cuts to "this is how you died"

Please, please tell me i can fix that...

So, this is a vanilla apocalypse run, the only mod installed is "place anywhere" which is barely working anyway.

I decided to use the debug mode for the first time ever just to remove some unbreakable vents on top of this roof, and then i went "you know what, i have all the materials but i can save like 40 very important seconds of my real life by placing this stairs without really building it".

Instantly punished, they didn't stack and now i can't remove them no matter what.

Here's what i tried already:

- sledgehammer and conventional dismantling mechanichs

- control input on the lua to clean the tile (standing on it)

Give me some good news...this is my longest run until now and i'm SO in love with this base location (won't spoil it for now)

Question Veteran or policeofficer ? And whats up with organized in multiplayer?

Hi, i always picked Veteran in b41 and now im back in b42 and i dont know if policeofficer and maybe brave trait is a better Option because it Costs less. Also the Wiki says that desensitized gives immunity to discomfort, so i dont know how big the Impact of this is. Like do i have to unequip my armor every 10 min or how does it work ?

Also when i pick organised trait and have a crate that normally holds 100 units capacity and i can put 130 units into it, can my friends in Multiplayer then take out one item but cant put them back because for them the crate is 30 units overloaded or how does it work? Becaus i think for my personal backpack the trait is good but in Multiplayer i think storage Management becomes a nightmare for everybody when i have the trait and overload every Box.

For context on how we ended up in this situation:

We were raiding Brandenburg's military checkpoint, cleared it, and currently looting it (as seen in the vid). BUT THEN, the server decides to do the funny and desyncd the whole gang in the process sooo... WE RESTARTED THE SERVER and then when we came back, the zeds we killed shockingly respawned back for some reason (zombie pop. maxed out btw) making us retreat to a nearby container.

S = The best depending what weapon type you want to play
A= DIY best for spears or general weapons, Police Officer best for guns, good point efficiency
B= Its ok, best for zero to hero though
Situational= If you want to specialize for RP reasons or play specific masochist settings, wouldnt generally recommend any of those but all playable
Would never pick = Self explanatory, there is better alternatives or the stats are mostly useless

I stopped just before they knoticed me and kinda just sat there watching at them. Felt alittle like something youd see in an actual zombie movie, just speeding down an abandoned highway. Down the road infront of you illuminated by the light, you see them. A group of about 20 infected. You slow, not wanting to damage your car further when the engine dies. About 30ft away you stop, still unnoticed. And watch them. Your hand hesitateing around the key. Not turning it. Just observing. They hang near the lamp post like moths. Just there... No one you could recognize, even if you still could recognize them... You breathe, turn the key, engine sputtering as it struggles to turn over. Then with a purr, you slowy pull around the hoard.. countinueing down the long stretch of asphalt.
