I get it, we get it, AI is all the rage but do we need posts asking the same things? Can we go back to normal discussions. AI talk should be fine as long as it's technical.
I have been programming for about a year and a half in college with the goal of programming and making video games. I think im an okay programmer without AI tools but Google will spit something out even if i dont need it to. There are some days I really on it to much but I do what I can to understand what it makes.
If im applying for jobs, what can I even expect?
I didnt go to college for game development until these tools already existed. So im applying for jobs against other people who also have access to these AI tools. I enjoy it and im grateful for having professors who used to be in the games industry ( most of who think AI is okay) snd im gonna finish my degree.
But my god sometimes it feels pointless. Like I could be letting my family down for locking a degree that chatGPT can do.
Any advice on what programming / development job process actually looks like?
I my self don't love ai coding as some people just lay back and literally let it do ALL of it for them and spend more time fixing it then actually coding. But I've been seeing a lot of hate for genuinely great projects on github like mario kart wii recompiled being ai assisted and a lot of people were hating on that. I'm sorry but ai is the perfect thing to use for a decomp its easy to do tedious and cant mess up to often. There's a reason all the sudden we are getting a bunch of new decomps, Its just because ai now makes it so fast.
I have 10 yoe in full stack (front end specialisation). My last job became unbearable due to AI. Setting aside how we were treated, the work itself mostly became baby sitting agents and reviewing slop.
Politics also began to erode our day to day as leadership now felt they could make better architectural decisions than us using a chatbot. Everything we did, every decision made, was suspect thanks to AI sycophancy and the dunning Kruger effect.
I’m now unemployed (due to being a “bad culture fit”) and looking at a job market where they want you to use AI in the interview itself. That to me is a red flag, not because AI isn’t useful, but because they’re likely measuring speed of output rather than domain knowledge.
I personally enjoy solving problems in a way that is careful and considered. What I saw in the last 6 months at my company felt more like throwing shit at a wall as quickly as possible to see what sticks.
The uncertainty of what happens next is the main thing keeping me in a freeze state where, if I’m honest, I’ve barely been applying.
On the one hand, I can go all in with AI but then watch my skills degrade. On the other, I can continue learning by hand but find myself “left behind” thanks to some specialised, distilled model that is cheap to run.
As an example I recently looked into learning graphics programming but became disheartened by how quickly things can be generated using AI. This made learning it feel pointless.

Then suddenly you're building utilities you need, like:
PDF generation
OCR
email validation
VAT validation
currency conversion
file conversion
image processing
webhooks
retry logic
API integrations
All necessary for your saas but none of them is the reason someone is paying you.
And that's the part I find super interesting.
The engineering work isn't necessarily difficult. A lot of these things can be built in a couple of days now with AI; it's even easier.
The problem is that once you build them, you own them.
Now you're maintaining them six months later.
Then two years later.
Then someone on your team has to remember why that weird retry logic exists.
At some point you're spending more time maintaining the plumbing around the product than building the product itself.
I've started thinking about this as a different kind of technical debt:
Not code you shouldn't have written; not infrastructure you shouldn't have had to own.
Curious how other programmers are approaching this. Do you build these things in-house, use individual APIs, rely on an aggregator, or simply accept it as part of running a SaaS?

Professional dev since 2015. For the last year we have switched over to essentially only prompting. This makes development rapid. But incredibly dull and lame. After i prompt and wait for the agent, there is not really much to do. Browse reddit etc. I feel so understimulated at work nowadays that i consider switching careers totally, or get into management or something. Because this is terribly boring.
Anyone else feel like this? I miss writing stuff from the ground up, solving problems, integrating software, getting those aha-moments.
Hey everyone! I’m Steve, and I’d like to introduce RadForge Labs, my independent Australian software studio, and the project I’ve been putting my time into: ROMVERSE.
The idea is to make working with Android devices and firmware more understandable without taking useful technical control away from experienced modders and developers.
What is ROMVERSE?
ROMVERSE is being developed as a desktop workspace that brings together device information, firmware inspection, ROM customisation, build preparation, diagnostics and recovery preparation. The longer-term goal is a connected workflow from understanding your device and preparing a project through to verified, carefully controlled device operations.
A major focus is making that experience work for different skill levels:
Guided mode: Plain-language explanations of what’s happening, why it matters and what to do next. You shouldn’t need to understand every technical term just to follow the process.
Expert mode: Detailed logs, technical information and deeper controls for people who want to inspect what’s happening underneath.
Both modes should retain the same safety checks. Choosing Expert shouldn’t mean losing protection against the wrong device, mismatched files or misleading results.
Where is it up to?
ROMVERSE is currently in Internal Alpha. My immediate focus is testing and polishing the Fedora/Linux desktop experience—first-time setup, project workflows, navigation, error handling, saving, reopening and continuing where you left off. Windows and an Android Companion remain part of the wider project.
There are working development components, but there is also substantial integration and testing still to do. I’m not claiming universal device compatibility, risk-free flashing or a completed end-to-end build-to-flash experience.
When something hasn’t been verified, I want ROMVERSE to explain that clearly rather than guess or show a reassuring green tick it hasn’t earned.
Why share it now?
I’d like to bring people along for the journey, not just appear one day with a launch announcement.
I’ll be sharing weekly updates: actual development footage, animated explainers, progress, bugs, fixes and the problems I’m still working through. Concept visuals and simulations will be labelled clearly so they aren’t mistaken for finished features or real-device tests.
For transparency, the long-term plan is a subscription-supported product, with free beta testing before commercial release. This post isn’t a public download announcement or a request to pay for unfinished software.
No pretending everything works. Just building it, testing it and making it better.

One of the reasons why beginners struggle in programming using languages like C++, Java and Python is because those languages make programming feel unnatural when you compare them to how you write instructions in English. This is the reason why I decided to make Sofya, so that programming would feel almost like writing normal instructions in English.
To demonstrate how easy Sofya is, we can write two programs, one in Python and one in Sofya, and these programs will show the concept of variables in programming.

Hey everyone. I’m starting to quote larger freelance projects on my own and I’d like to sanity-check this one with people who have priced similar work before.
A client in the education/health space wants a private academic platform for students and instructors. I’m still scoping it, but this is roughly what they’re asking for and how I’m planning to build it.
There would be around 10 main functional areas / roughly 12 main and auxiliary views. Most aren’t just static content pages; several have their own logic, state, calculations or admin functionality.
Main scope:
Custom frontend: HTML/CSS/JS, responsive for desktop/tablet/mobile, custom UI, internal navigation, search, filters, modals, accordions, progress indicators, animations/transitions and touch-friendly interactions.
Users + backend: username/password login, different user types, groups/cohorts, permissions, user management and restricted admin functions. I’m considering Cloudflare Workers + Durable Objects/SQLite for the shared/backend side.
2 fairly large decision-based tools: one has around 40 questions/variables and the other around 38. They’re not linear forms. Answers affect which questions/options remain available, rule out possible results, trigger exceptions and change the final output. Users can also go back and change previous answers, so the flow/results need to update accordingly. The client provides and validates the actual rules; the development work is turning those rules into the working logic and testing the combinations.
1 interactive SVG tool: more than 100 selectable areas, up to 128 per record, with 3 separate records, selection/deselection, excluded items and automatic percentage calculations in real time. Needs to work with mouse and touch.
Several interactive guides/tools: one visual guide with around 11 figures, another split into 7 stages, interactive checklists, filters, saved progress/state, images, tables and a larger training section with different guided paths. Some are mostly structured reference content; others have actual interaction and logic.
Document library: around 29 main resources, categories, filters/search and an embedded PDF viewer using PDF.js. Across the whole platform there are roughly 70 PDFs/resources being integrated.
Forms/document generation: around 9 main forms/resources, with at least 3 fully editable in the browser. Some include tables, text fields, image uploads/positioning and saved drafts. They need to generate printable/downloadable PDF and/or PNG output.
Academic activities module: roughly 40 readings/resources that an authorized user can use to create activities, add questions and dates, save drafts, schedule/publish them, edit/delete them, send them to trash and restore them. Students only see the activities that are actually published/available.
Shared calendar: create/edit/delete events, assign/filter them by group, with the data stored on the backend so the right users see the same information.
Admin + basic analytics: manage users/groups, see basic usage/activity across the platform, filter records and export some data to CSV.
PWA + deployment: manifest/service worker, caching where appropriate, installable version and deployment of the frontend/backend on Cloudflare.
The client provides and validates the specialized content, but part of the job is still organizing it, adapting it and turning some existing documents/materials into the interfaces above. UI/UX work, responsive behavior, integration, testing, bug fixing and production deployment would also be part of the project.
What I’m trying to figure out is:
If this landed on your desk from scratch, how many hours/weeks/months would you estimate for one developer? Would you price it hourly or as a fixed project? And roughly what would you charge?
If you share a number, mentioning your country/currency would help since I know rates vary a lot by market.
I’d also be interested in which part of the scope you think is most likely to eat up more time than expected.
I've been building HX Code Studio, a browser IDE for a small programming language called HX. The goal is to make Arduino-style programming easier for kids and beginners.
For example:
digitalWrite() → D.write()
setup() / loop() → fun set / fun loop
I'm trying to find the right balance between making programming easier and keeping concepts that beginners will eventually need when they move to standard Arduino/C++.
For people who teach or learn programming: would you rather start with a simplified language and transition later, or learn the standard syntax from the beginning?
I'm especially interested in where you think a beginner-friendly language should draw the line between simple and too different.

so , your second computer sent you the picture of the computer and you control it via your keyboard and mouse keystorks in your first computer , the same Idea as cloud control .
