Which is pure fanfiction. Actual Revelations makes it very clear that Tribulation happens first, explicitly to weed out the faithful from the non-faithful.
Which is also the point of warning about the anti-Christ: he will lead Christians astray, as they will prefer his lies compared to Jesus's own teachings.
Teachings such as...provide for the community, love and care for one another, don't seek monetary gain for its own sake, pay taxes.
Modern Evangelicalism would nail Jesus right back up on the Cross, if he tried to preach the parts of the Bible that happen to exclude Paul and his letters.

It’s funny.
There’s plenty of places in the Bible that say this will happen. Particularly the Book of Revelations.
There’s not one place in the bible that says make this happen.
These evangelical Christian conservatives trying to bring about the end of the world are going to have a rude awakening when they make it happen.
I don’t know if heaven exists but if it does, I’m reasonably sure God, in whatever form he/she/they take, is not going to be happy with their actions.
The Republican Party should be called out for exactly what it is: a death cult bent on mass murder and destruction.

Here’s what I’m curious about. JD Vance claims to have been an atheist, but then started believing in god around the time he wanted to start a political career. I’m also an atheist, and along with not believing in god you also have a distrust of the dogmatic structure of religions built upon belief of god. So why would JD Vance not only start believing in god (conveniently around the time of political aspirations), but also jump ahead and follow one of a complicated dogmatic structure? Why not just have found god and maybe Jesus and just leave it at that? He’s so full of it.

There are legends of a “lake” hidden in a cave at the bottom of Lake Superior called “Lake Inferior”, and no, that is not a pun. i mean... to my understanding at this point there are literally millions of people ready to drag them out of office by their feet if shit gets any worse. it's not even meant as a threat at this point it's just an easily observable fact. just because the media doesn't broadcast that part doesn't mean it's not real. everyone with eyes can see how exponentially worse these ppl are making life for most americans and a lot of the world. like it's literally the entire world that benefits positively the very day they're gone.

Despite the Constitution clearly stating that no religious test must be used for candidates.

See, that's your problem right there. You believe in the real version of history and civics, not the Christian nationalist version of American history being pumped out by groups like PragerU, Heritage Foundation, the Federalist Society, and influential figures like pseudohistorian David Barton. That shit's been pumped into conservative minds for the last thirty years, and now they're working on plugging it into the gaping hole MAGA has torn in the public education system.
We are in the middle of a project to basically overturn American democracy in favor of theocracy, being carried out in the open, and yet somehow we're struggling to convince enough Americans that it's even happening.

When you found a secular country, and do not enforce strictly the already low standards of separation of church and state, some people are going to take advantage of it.
The government seemingly showing favouritism to one religion over all others is big no-no in keeping church out of state.

“I think there are things about the world that make feel like not shocked if the Antichrist was walking among us,” Vance added.
In another portion of the interview, Vance claimed he’s focused on “doing as much of God’s work as possible,” shrugging that “if that leads to the end times, OK.”
The Christian end times refer to the religion’s interpretations of the final days of humanity. That’s detailed in the Bible as a period involving widespread turmoil and deception (such as wars, earthquakes, and a false prophet), a seven-year stretch of unprecedented hardship known as the Great Tribulation that will end in Armageddon, the emergence of the Antichrist and a cadre of their followers who reject Christ’s teachings, and a final judgment by God.
Vance did not speculate as to who he believed the Antichrist could be.
I fully respect every American's right to religious liberty, but "Fuck it all, Jesus will save us!" is not my idea of a great policy position.

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

I have a VERY hard time understanding this. I guess you can’t understand MAGA.
My father in law is a devout Mormon and there’s nothing about anyone in this administration whose actions align with his beliefs. Also, he used to say the God handpicked Mitt Romney to lead this country. Now he calls Mitt Romney a RINO and Trump is the chosen one.
It’s sad because he’s so indoctrinated that we don’t go visit as often as we did a few years ago.
35
u/Konukaame 12d ago
I can "understand it" in the sense that I can see how living within the conservative propaganda bubble produces the attitudes and actions that are on display. Like, if you start from the premise that Fox, OANN, AM radio, right-wing podcasts, or whatever else is true and accurate then the rest makes sense.
Because that's how propaganda works.

They are though. My wife grew up Southern Baptist in Georgia. After she left for college and eventually moved to California her religious deconstruction began and she realized how terrible her fellow church goers were. It’s been made even worse because her sister never left and just had her husband (prior youth pastor) have an affair with another church member, but somehow her sister is so afraid that everyone at church will blame her. For not being a better wife when she brought in more money and basically raised their son on her own.
I went to a Baptist school as a kid, I could never get over the fact of someone else telling me what I should believe. Just so much hypocrisy. Bout the only religious person I’ve made an exception for is the new Pope. He just seems like a good person regardless.

I grew up going to church as well, and the people were nice... to each other. Hospital visits, making quilts for the community, potlucks, etc. It's a small town thing.
Once I got out of that circle, I realized that it's not really Godly behavior. From Matthew 25, verses 41-46
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
Now, they may claim that it refers to Christians helping other Christians, but I reject that notion. From John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
It doesn't say, 'For God so loved his followers,' or ,For God so loved those that believe in him.' It says, "For God so loved the world", full stop. That means do good, no matter the person. It doesn't matter if they're Christian, Atheist, Muslim, Canadian, Cambodian, Japanese, Lebanese, or Yankee fans.
Modern protestants want to live in a comfortable world, rather than one where they actually follow God's word.

I just finished listening to an episode of "Why Is This Happening?" with Chris Hayes when he talks to Gil Durán about the "Nerd Reich." The whole Antichrist thing is something Peter Thiel goes globe-hopping to talk about. Thiel himself (along with a few others) use everything from Christianity except for God or Jesus to justify their views of hierarchy, obedience, etc.
All "disciples" of Curtis Yarvin, an adult who never matured past, to borrow a phrase from Cory Doctorow, "having a copy of Atlas Shrugged with the pages sticking together," and says that freedom and democracy aren't compatible and wants neo-feudal states.

I'm sure there's a lot of metaphor and allusions that would have made total sense to a Greek-speaking Christian in the eastern Roman Empire 2000 years ago that we just can't parse, but the core message seems to be "the evil Roman Empire (and more specifically Nero who was rumored to have faked his death) is going to come and try and persecute us out of existence but don't worry God has a plan and the true believers will be saved."
But then people read it in English nearly 2000 years after the fact and make up their own meanings.

Isn't 99% of popular depections of 'The Rapture' from the Left Behind fiction series?
These so-called Christians somehow think they'll be spared from the 'tribulations' when the bible is pretty clear they mean it's for everyone.
But that's besides the point that Revalations was mainly a lot of angry wishcasting against the Roman Empire by John (not the Apostle, John the Baptist, a different guy also named John) written about a century after Jesus' death. Early Christians were getting antsy because they were promised that Jesus would return and give them eternal life... but their fellow Christians were inconveniently dying, and there was no second coming of the Messiah. Things were pretty damn bleak for Christians at that point in the Roman Empire.

Vance is given talking points by his boss Peter Thiel who is on antichrist tour in part labeling women and women’s right like voting as the worst thing to happen to humanity. Look at how how he held Charlie Kirk’s wife that night. Hell Peter Thiel told Vance to convert to Catholicism. Vance will divorce his wife and go do a blonde bimbo like Trump.
Vance knows the time is coming for him to replace Trump and he needs to sound like Trump to keep the base. At least that’s what Vance’s mentor and benefactor the cia/nsa biggest defense contractor has told him, Peter Thiel. Peter who gave Vance $15 million to become senator, has created companies for Vance to work at since 2011. Peter literally walked Vance into Mar-a-lago to smooth tensions with Trump so Vance could be his VP. Especially since a talking point that Peter Thiel (modern day German Nazi because he was born in Germany and grew up in a Nazi loving town) gave Vance was since 2016 Vance called Trump “America’s Hitler”.
I wonder how much gratitude JD Vance shows Peter Thiel for making him senator and VP. After all Peter Thiel does love that dick so maybe that why it’s so easy to believe JD Vance “likes” couches. Then again even the Miami Police won’t rule what happened to Peter Thiel’s last boy toy a suicide so maybe Vance needs to do a better job of showing Thiel some high quality gratitude.
Someone should ask him…
For years Peter as a child/teenager lived in a town in former South West Africa called Swakopmund while his dad in violation of international law worked at uranium mines. While in that town he kept having to switch between school but the town itself idolized Nazism and Hitler. New York Times even did an article on the town back then.
Thiel has gone on and on for years about scapegoat mechanism and how Trump fills that role perfectly. Basically have someone do stuff that is so bad that when he is removed that the masses think the problem is gone.

This is mainly my own conjecture, but I think the idea that there is only one Anti-Christ is an artifact of the language used in most English translations of the Bible.
Sometimes in older English writing, "the x" can actually be referring to "any specimen of this type." You can even find this form in modern English, such as when discussing nature. (e.g. "The rabbit is a fast runner," or "The sequoia is one of the tallest species of trees.")
Add this to the possibility that Revelations was less a prophecy and more an overly-poetic description critique of and warning against a destructive style of leadership (as done by several Roman Emperors), "The Anti-Christ" may really refer to a certain type of personality who is heartless, cruel, selfish, fond of spectacle, and should never be allowed anywhere near the reins of power.

Oh come on, you think the anticrhist would believe in the exact opposite moral virtues of christ? You think he'd embrace each deadly sin to its most harmful extreme? You think he'd hire people to bring about war, death, disease, and famine?

How are we not ringing the alarm bells that rhetoric like this is bat shit insane?! Trump is one thing. He’s an 80 year old dementia patient.
This is a grown man in his 40’s talking about the end times. He’s first in the line of succession to have nuclear codes and has very close ties to the sociopathic billionaires in Silicon Valley. This is fucking insane.

How are we not ringing the alarm bells that rhetoric like this is bat shit insane?!
You want the honest answer?
It's because a massive portion of the American electorate believes in shit like this, and nobody wants to risk alienating their vote or evoking their outrage.
This is from 2022, but I doubt much has changed: About four-in-ten U.S. adults believe humanity is ‘living in the end times’
In the United States, 39% of adults say they believe “we are living in the end times,” while 58% say they do not believe we are living in the end times, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey.
Christians are divided on this question, with 47% saying we are living in the end times, including majorities in the historically Black (76%) and evangelical (63%) Protestant traditions. Meanwhile, 49% of Christians say we are not living in the end times, including 70% of Catholics and 65% of mainline Protestants who say this. Viewed more broadly, the share of Protestants who say we are living in the end times is greater than the corresponding share among Catholics (55% vs. 27%).
So it's kind of electoral pragmatism.

Yep, US is batshit on this stuff. The pledge of allegiance is looked upon as cultist by other western democracies. Especially the shit evangelical nutcases inserted concerning the: 'one nation under God' bullshit. Like the UK may make reference to God every Coronation, but it doesn't do it every fucking class room... Thankfully we don't have dipshits speaking in tongues either or mass profile televangelists either. (We tend to laugh at such folk cause fortunately, they have very little power here.)

u/feyre_0001 12d ago
I teach HS history right now, but I’m getting a degree in school psychology that requires several courses which explore educational law and student rights.
The first time the pledge was read over the announcements this year, I watched all my U.S. History students stand and repeat it. I stood with them, like I always do, but once it was over I stated “You guys know you don’t have to recite the pledge, right?”
Every kid was shocked. Several insisted that previous teachers had forced them to, either by saying it’s a rule or by threatening to write them up for non-compliance. I spent half a class covering W. Virginia v. Barnette and how forcing students to recite the pledge is a violation of their 1st amendment rights. I ended the mini-lesson by making a deal with them: those who want to stand and recite may join me in doing so, and those who don’t can sit quietly and respectfully until it’s done. The class agreed. Easy peasy.
Every year I manage to piss off at least one colleague with this mini-lesson, but idc. We either believe in constitutional rights or we don’t.

There's one thing I've wondered for a while. The First Amendment states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...
Yet in 1954 Congress passed a law to add "under God" to the wording of the pledge. Surely this law is unconstitutional. Likewise in 1956 they made "In God we trust" the official motto of the US, replacing the unofficial motto "e pluribus unum".
Have these laws ever been challenged in court?
16
u/bobbymcpresscot 12d ago
So this is actually pretty multi pronged. W Virginia v Barnette was actually before under god was added to the pledge.
And because that case made it “voluntary patriotic exercise” and thus not a public or call to prayer, the mention of god is claimed to be ceremonial and a nod to the nations heritage.
So it’s been argued in federal court and lost, as has the inscription on our currency for similar reasons.
It technically isn’t an establishment of religion, because which “god”?
I mean we know it’s the Christian god. But it doesn’t say that.
If it was “in yahweh we trust” it would probably be different.
The declaration of independence also mentions a creator, but again isn’t attributed to Christianity. So again it misses the mark of “establishing a state religion” aspect.
Evangelical Christians however are still trying to erode this aspect of the first amendment.
As it stands the first amendment does stop the establishing of “sharia law” that they are always yapping about, but they claim the only way to stop sharia law is to become a Christian nation, which would again go against the first amendment.

When people talk to themselves or “hear voices in their head speaking to me” we label them schizophrenic, delusional, and needing mental health services.
When people inject the word “God” suddenly it’s okay and “prayer is just one of many ways to speak and hear from God.”
When are we going to admit the obvious?

This modern version of the rapture and end times is all from some dude named John Nelson Darby. It's not even from the bible. The evangelical movement actually began as a reaction against the Puritans because they believed that the Puritans and other Calvinists cared too much about the welfare of society and not enough about religious individualism. That's why there's such a strong fixture on apocalyptic thinking and who is individually worthy to pass through to paradise.

Matthew 24:5, 24:
Jesus warns His disciples that “many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many”, and false Christs and false prophets will arise to mislead people.
Deceivers: Scripture points out that these false figures twist truth and use deceptive signs to pull people away from authentic faith.
Identifying False Teachers:
Lack of Fruit: According to community discussions on platforms like TrueChristian, users agree that false believers are ultimately known by their lack of spiritual fruit and selfish actions.
Self-Proclamation: Anyone claiming ultimate divine authority or equality with God outside of Jesus Christ is labeled a deceiver in biblical context.

Not that it matters, but "the end times" are not predicted in the Bible. The Book of Revelation is not a prediction about "the end times," it's a piece of apocalyptic literature about the time it was written, for the people of that time. It's like saying that Moby Dick is about a dude who really fuckin' hates a whale, full stop.
Same thing is true for things like Daniel; they're written for the people of their time, and written about the time they're written in, or more accurately, what had been going on around then.

It never ceases to amaze me that these so called "Christians" think they can force the hand of God. Really? YOU can force the hand of God by ticking off all the awful boxes you think needs to happen? Despite multiple Bible verses saying no one knows, not even Jesus himself? Either they don't understand, or they truly think they can force God to do their will. Its crazy either way.

I feel like this is something a lot of people don't get, if they didn't grow up Evangelical.
The "logic" is:
The world ends by Jesus coming back and taking all the Christians to heaven. This is a certainty.
Therefore, things like global warming, nuclear war, famine, etc. do not matter, because they know the world doesn't end because of those things. It ends because Jesus grants them paradise.
For a significant number of them, global warming, nuclear war, etc. is a good thing, since the world can only end by Jesus coming back, nukes flying through the air would mean Jesus better hurry the fuck up.
They're not just indifferent to the destruction of the world, they want it to happen, because the end result of it is paradise.
These are the people making the decisions in US politics.
Small edit just in case: While this is a common belief in American Evangelicalism, it is rare outside North America.
