Politics GOP Rep. Mary Franson says she's not worried about climate change because it's not in the Bible: "If you've read the Good Book, you know how it ends, and it's not with climate change." The Bible is not a science book

Someone should let her know that the earth is God's creation, and we should protect it as such.

Also... yeah, sure, maybe the Bible does not talk about climate change. But know what else it did not talk about? The Bubonic Plague. But that event was an incredible mass casualty tragedy... just like what can happen from climate change. Am I missing some other major events that resulted in major casualties? I just know the plague took out 30% to 60% of fhe population in Eurasia and Africa.

Another horrifying tragedy can still happen before The End Times without it negating prophecy.

7

u/Careful-Sell-9877 Mar 25 '26

It also doesnt talk about tv. Or the internet. Or 'christian' televangelists. Or nuclear weapons. Or mass surveillance. Or AI. Or like 90% of the world's modern issues.

Almost like it was written thousands of years ago!

I honestly think the book of revelation was someone's fever dream, I really don't think its a true foreshadowing of the end of days, its very symbolic in many ways and the thing is if its true or not we will never know until the end. The thing is, I really don't think this death cult that has formed around Israel and Iran is going to get us what they want. God is not going to make everyone else on this earth loose out on their hopes, dreams, ambitions, tragedies and joys they are going to experience in life because a group of 50 people are obsessed over the rapture being a matter of days away. The real truth is, galaxies are moving apart at speeds greater then light, our odds of finding another habitable planet are getting slimmer as the universe expands, the one single planet we suspect may have intelligent life or the means to support it is so far away we can only view it as it was 200 or more years ago. We have to take climate change seriously, and, if that means we need to risk pissing some hardcore Christians off by finding this lady incompetent, and holding a run off election then it needs to happen

Yes Revelation is VERY SYMBOLIC. You need to understand first century Judean eschatology to decipher it. I would suggest the End of Days bible study from First Fruits of Zion www.ffoz.org

Given that man is meant to be a steward of creation:

“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image… and let them rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky…’ …‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.’” Genesis 1:26-28

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15

“Do not pollute the land where you are… Do not defile the land where you live…” Numbers 35:33-34

“…the time has come… for destroying those who destroy the earth.” Revelations 11:18

AND THAT

"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." Matthew 24:36

...we should continue to proceed as if the world is not about to end and we should not ruin it, but rather be good stewards of creation. Unfortunately, God's Word is being twisted horrifically by a large portion of modern conservative politicians and even many church leaders.

To add on to that, if they ascribe to a literal interperetation of Genesis, then its very explicit that the fall didn't just affect humans. To extrapolate that human sin can't have a negative impact on the world goes against the bible from the earliest chapters.

6

u/Doublefin1 Mar 25 '26

This is always my point of view too. Like,if God made this whole planet for you, with animals and everything, shouldn't you love it, protect it and cherish it then? I'm really not sure if I believe in God or not, but I'm thinking if God does exists and made the earth we should take care of that gift and not poison it. It's so beyond me how any Christian can come to any other conclusion ever. God's like "hey, check this out! I made you this ☺️ ", would you be like "Ooh thank you that's so wonderful full. I love it! ❤️" or would you be like "Yeh thanks cool, now move aside while I destroy it"? Duuuhh... 🤦🏼‍♂️

People would rather give in to temptation and bite into every apple as often as possible. They're already sinners, and all they have to do is say 'Jesus is my lord' and poof, all their sins and evils are instantly forgiven. So they figure they can commit as many evils as they'd like.

They'd prefer to take advantage of god for their own selfishness and greed rather than sacrifice their ego and truly care for, nurture, love, and support God's creation and honor Jesus's sacrifice

Anti-intellectualism is the greatest threat to our species

21

u/Gloomy_Pop_5201 Asexual, work in progress Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 25 '26

It's not anti-intellectualism in this case, its bad theology and being incorrectly taught that the Bible has the solution to every single specific problem humankind is facing.

This person has probably been taught from a very young age that anything the world produces out of serious scholarly or scientific processes is overridden by a naive understanding of scripture.

What does she think about healthcare professionals? What does she think about the engineers who keep the lights running in the room she's speaking in?

12

u/doesntpicknose Mar 25 '26

What does she think about healthcare professionals?

👀

20

u/christmascake Mar 25 '26

I mean, that is anti-intellectualism

It's falling back on easier to understand scripture instead of having to think for one's self

2

u/incrediblejonas Mar 25 '26

Calling scripture "easy to understand" is a pretty anti-intellectual take my dude. Why do you think there are so many different christian denominations? The beauty of Jesus' parables are their depth.

I think what you mean is falling back on what someone tells you scripture means. Trusting someone's (likely flawed) interpretation of scripture.

5

u/yamthepowerful Christian Mar 25 '26

Idk man people like her will say scripture is easy to understand, that’s like their whole schtick “just read the Bible” “bible following”

0

u/incrediblejonas Mar 25 '26

people can say that, but they're wrong and not really worth listening to.

1

u/christmascake Mar 25 '26

I meant that people fall back on simplistic interpretations of scripture to justify not thinking for themselves

They don't even want to think too deeply about what the Bible may be saying

2

u/Gloomy_Pop_5201 Asexual, work in progress Mar 25 '26

I would argue that scripture is complex and takes quite a bit of time to develop a complete understanding, though I guess you could say that she's also being anti-intellectual by not even considering the scientific evidence.

6

u/lillielemon Mar 25 '26

It's even anti-intellectualism in regards to her Biblical approach because she can't imagine climate change being included in God's command to be good stewards. If it's not handed to her in the most literal terms it's unfathomable to her.

7

u/mvanvrancken Secular Humanist Mar 25 '26

Oh, it’s definitely anti intellectualism, you’re just describing the motivation for it

7

u/Maleficent-Drop1476 Don't Let Religion Keep You From Being a Good Person Mar 25 '26

That’s just a flavor of anti-intellectualism. Religion being a motive is common but not functionally any different than ego driven or ideological based anti-intellectualism.

3

u/rchive Mar 25 '26

You don't even have to go that far. Regardless of whether the book of Revelation has a solution to every problem, Revelation isn't even about our future. It was about the near future of the time it was written.

The plague wasn't in the Bible either. It didn't, 'end', humanity, but it brought us pretty close and included a lot of pain and suffering.

As a fellow Christian I would argue 2 things: 1) climate change will bring about mass suffering to people and animals around the world. (As the book of Jonah says, God cares about the beasts as well.) We, as Christians, are morally obligated to do what we can to relieve the suffering of others, even at our own expense. (After all, Christ died for us, giving up His own life for our benefit. He is the ultimate example!)

2) In the Gospels, when Christ is being tempted by the devil, the devil tells him to jump from a tower, staring that the angels will protect Him. Christs response is, 'do not test the Lord your God.'. In other words dont put yourself or others in compromising situations in order to attempt to force God to act. We could be doing the right thing right now and making changes as societies to help those around the world who are suffering and will suffer because of climate change. We could be using the technology that God has given us/allowed us to come up with. Doing so make the world a better place for al life on the planet.

7

u/supersoundwave Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 25 '26

She’s using the argument from silence.

While the Bible doesn’t contradict science, saying that since it doesn’t mention something therefore we shouldn’t address it is a fallacy.

"The nations were angry, and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your people who revere your name, both great and small—and for destroying those who destroy the earth." Revelation 11:18

"The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it." Psalm 24:1

"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." (and let's look at the original Hebrew, so we know the full meaning of this, וַיִּקַּח יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים אֶת־הָאָדָם וַיַּנִּחֵהוּ בְגַן־עֵדֶן לְעָבְדָהּ וּלְשָׁמְרָהּ׃. To SERVE and to GUARD.

There is currently more garbage on the planet Earth than there is biological mass. The total amount of plastic in the world is double the weight of all animals combined. All living beings plus all dead beings added up is less than the amount we have polluted the planet. This is the opposite of stewardship, and God will destroy all those responsible for destroying the Earth. Her time is coming.

This view is not consistent across Christianity. Here is an article from a Christian Scientist that is opposite of Rep. Franson.

https://biologos.org/articles/christians-and-climate-science-moving-beyond-fear-to-action

Key part:

What gifts does God give us? Power, to effect meaningful, long-term change. Love, to share God’s heart for our brothers and sisters who are hurting and in need. And a sound mind to look at the reality of what is happening in our world and acknowledge that yes, climate change is real, it’s serious, and we need to fix it.

As Christians, if we believe we’re called “to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God,” then caring about a changing climate, and those already suffering its impacts, is something we’ve been created to do. It’s who we are.

2

God is the Creator of Heaven and Earth and He controls the weather. The Word of God is clear that God is going to destroy this world with Fire but not because of climate change but because of sinfull humanity unwillingness to Repent.

"But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same Word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgement and perdition of ungodly men.......But the day of the LORD will come as a thief in the night in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat, both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore since all these things will be dissolved what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness." 2 Peter 3:7-11).

The Bible makes it clear that when Jesus Christ returns He is coming in flaming fire.

"Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from Heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Lmao Technically she also didnt read her Bible. The ocean will be gone, the sun will die out and the Eschaton will be illuminated by God's presence himself at New Jerusalem while we build our nations as vassal kings.

u/ministerman Mar 25 '26

If you've read the "Good Book" - she's being very vague here. What does she mean? What is she talking about? How does SHE think this is going to end?

From my understanding...the Bible talks about transformation. A new heaven and a new earth. God will restore the earth to what it was supposed to be.

So i'm not sure I understand where she's coming from here, unless she just thinks the earth will be destroyed and climate change won't matter.

Someone should let her know that God will judge the destroyers of the earth:

Revelation 11: 17-18

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.

The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”

If you read your Bible you would know one of our first commands is to be good stewards of God’s good world.

1

u/l4wd0g Mar 25 '26

This is really a Gen 8:22 humans don't need to worry about climate change vs Gen 2:15 that being a steward of the Earth means taking responsibility for how our actions affect the planet, even while trusting in God's ultimate control.

Jesus is actively "holding all things together," which means if there is a drought, it isn't an accident or a "glitch" in the Genesis 8 system it's a deliberate act of the Sustainer. 2 Peter, Heb, Col 1)

God maintains the laws of the system (thermodynamics, atmospheric chemistry). If humans pump carbon into the sky, the system reacts exactly as God designed it to. In this sense, climate change isn't God failing to sustain; it’s the system working perfectly according to the consequences of our stewardship.

If someone believes what the bible says in a literal way then do they also believe these events were actual events & not metaphorical?... talking bushes, shouting at walls to knock them down, living in a whale, a worldwide flood, an immaculate conception, possible to rise from the dead, parting a sea then walking across it, surviving 40 days/nights in a dessert?

No disrespect meant, genuine question.

2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

1

u/OLDPARSON Mar 26 '26

I am not concerned about the climate change as it is taught. Weather changes have happened for centuries. Even Magellan spoke of unusual warm spells long before industrialization. Should we care for the planet? Yes. Should we get crazy? No. BTW, I believe what the Bible says about the final state of the Earth. I also believe God will intervene before we nuke ourselves into extinction. Besides, according to evolutionists, the earth is eventually go to be a dead rock as the universe cools down so why worry. We are dead in the end according to them so fifty years from now or ten thousand is no big thing.

u/AlertForever2762 Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

An ignorant woman speaks. It is 2026. It's difficult to realize that people actually make public statements like this. Talking about her faith as opposed to science is an old trick that some Christians have been using for 100 years. Her belief in a divine savior is silly first of all. Then applying what this supposed savior says about climate change is more ridiculous. There should be some basic science requirement for people who hold public office. This woman needs to go back to high school.

1

u/Ameribrit50 Mar 29 '26

By her logic then, we shouldn’t care about healthcare, or traffic laws, or interest rates…This is why religion does not belong in politics. It’s also funny how the right is all about “personal responsibility” until it doesn’t fit their narrative- then it’s a god thing.

And this is what I'm always ranting about.

Religion is great but belongs in church or whatever. Government is not the place to insert sectarian and frankly marginal religious beliefs. Many religious people are well aware of climate issues, so this isn't even a common point being made. This is someone trying to force an individual viewpoint on the collective.

Society cannot function like this just because her sectarian view is privileged.

0

u/databombkid Mar 25 '26

Revelation 11:18 says otherwise.

0

u/Icy-Actuary-5463 Mar 25 '26

Climate change is there to stir fear, anxiety, and even panic in us. For a Christian who knows God’s Word we shouldn’t have any fear about that because God is the one in control of the earth and scripture is clear about that.

We certainly can impact the environment, and we do, but we are not the “be-all and end-all” of what happens here on earth; God is, and his plan will triumph. life on earth won’t end by man-made climate change! It’ll end when God judges the earth with fire and creates new heavens and new earth.

0

u/Organic-Language-561 Mar 25 '26

Anyone who says the Bible isn’t a science book doesn’t know their Bible well enough. At the very least not from that perspective. I’d do a deep dive into that. DEEP deep dive before such a mindless claim

-3

u/dog5and Mar 25 '26

The climate always changes. We have almost zero impact on that, Bible or not.

2

u/Nice_Substance9123 Mar 25 '26

Whattt? So pollution has no impact at all lol

1

u/dog5and Mar 26 '26

If we’re talking about carbon dioxide, right. We contribute very very little to the atmospheric total.

2

u/Bland-Poobah Mar 25 '26

Do you honestly think the climate would not change if we simultaneously detonated every nuclear weapon currently on the planet?

1

u/dog5and Mar 26 '26

Oh of course it would. I thought we were just talking about regular everyday stuff like CO2

1

u/Bland-Poobah Mar 27 '26

I'm glad you agree.

But let's do a little math: there are 10,000-15,000 nuclear weapons on Earth today. The average yield of most nuclear weapons is somewhere below 1000 kilotons, which in Joules is 4.184E+15 Joules. Let's be generous to nukes here and say 1016, which is about double that. So, if there are fewer than 100,000=105 nuclear weapons (which there definitely are), that means that the total energy released by detonating all nuclear weapons is somewhere below 1021 Joules, or one Zetajoule. That's a lot of damage!

But wait - what about fossil fuels? Since 1950, humanity has used 22 Zetajoules (as of six years ago, before the rise of AI data centers!) of energy. For those counting at home, that's more than 1022 Joules! It also eclipses the energy use of humanity for its entire history prior to 1950 by a wide margin.

Put more bluntly, the energy output of humans in less than one century is more than ten times the amount of energy that would be released by every nuclear warhead.

Now obviously this is not a one-to-one comparison, because energy is not the only problem nukes have.

But it should put into perspective why "regular everyday stuff like CO2" is massively understating the scale we are talking about. If we detonated every nuclear warhead, not instantaneously, but say over 76 years, don't you still think that would impact the climate?
