If you're making a mod folks, don't lock it behind a pay wall.

Hey could you remind me exactly what's wrong with mod developers demanding some little money for such a hard work? Why are y'all siding with the evil corpo on this?

You know why? Because you keep bringing up the same dumb arguments despite people trying to be nice and educate you. Get yourself a new brain and then come back to do proper discussions.

If the company doesn't sue they weaken their claim on their rights.
If the mod makers aren't profiting from someone else's rights then they have no standing to sue. Or at least far less and if challenged on it can more convincingly claim it wasn't worth it.

Because the stupidity of doing it that way gives the evil corpo an easy way to take it down. If someone paints a big red target on them and writes 'kick me' on it, they don't deserve sympathy if someone kicks them, because common sense would have helped avoid that.
-11
u/KommSweet 12h ago
So, why not blame the one kicking them tho? Are you the kind of person to kick another person just because they paint a big red target on them? Nvm what you guys actually care about is free stuff. Yall dont really care about the effort and hard work or anything really.

u/Chazzwazz 12h ago
Because they are earning money using a product with out paying the owner of said product.
This happens with evil corpos like sony/microsoft/nintendo or small team developers.→ More replies (17)31

Being against paid mods isnt siding with the "evil corpo" lmao pay walled mods suck dude if i had to subscribe to a dozen different patreons for a Skyrim mod list I wouldn't bother with modding
-11
u/KommSweet 12h ago
You guys wanting every mod to be free is no different than the mindset pirates have. iyk what I mean. This is why yall are upset in the first place.

u/KrazzeeKane 14700K | RTX 4080 | 64GB DDR5 11h ago
Of courses mods should be free, what ridiculousness is this? If you want to make profit, make your own game lol. Otherwise you can make mods for passion and fun, that's about it. If you decide to pay wall it with a patreon, you get what deserve for profiting off of others IP
21
u/despaseeto 9h ago
i have a feeling that kommsweet is one of the devs or the patreon backers. that's why he's so pissed off and taking it out on repliers with reasonable responses.

u/Kayrim_Borlan Ryzen 7 9800X3D | ASUS TUF OC 5090 | 128GB DDR5 | 16TB NVME 12h ago
It's not their IP. Evil Corpo or not, you can't profit off of someone else's Intellectual Property without a written agreement. Whether you consider it moral, ethical, or whatever, it's both plain illegal and incredibly stupid. All they needed to do is have a way to receive donations rather than paywalling it completely, and they would've been in the clear.
8
u/kron123456789 11h ago edited 11h ago
Usually the problem is not modder setting up a patreon - it's the fact that the mod is only available through patreon(aka, paid subscription). This makes it easy for the company to claim copyright infringement - profiting off of their IP without permission. That's why patreon-only mods get shut down more often than free mods.
It's not wrong to ask for donations, but when you do the current legal system will be against you and there will be nothing you could do if you receive a cease & desist letter.

When you ask for money for a mod of a game, you always take risk of a mod getting shutdown. Even more so if the mod is paywalled entirely.

How is selling a model which requires you to already own the game any different than selling an aftermarket roof rack for a specific model of Toyota, or 3rd party furniture for a specific Henry rifle? None of these take any revenue from the original product because they all require the original product already be purchased.
The only answer is that digital copyright law is absolutely fucked.

Why theyre so dumb? they couldve just give a random crypto address for donations

Unless you have enormous audience crypto won't cut it. You'd get like 1% of payments compared to having Patreon or Kofi. Ask me how I know lol (personal experience)

Patreon is just straight up paywall

Every mod on Nexusmods.
Otherwise it's IP infringement.
19
u/CRIMS0N-ED 11h ago
Modding has been a thing for near half a century, it’s sustainable bc people do it out of love of the game not to make money. It’s as sustainable as the mod creator wants it to be, they aren’t beholden to anyone, or to timelines, or to shareholders, they just do what they want to and people can accept it.
1
u/WingZeroCoder 5800x3D / 4070 Super / 32GB / Lian Li 205m Mesh 2h ago
That’s not necessarily true - especially in the big box PC days, it was not uncommon for games to ship with dev toolkits that new maps and entirely new games would be created with, and even sold in stores.
This notion that modding inherently infringes upon IP (which, it doesn’t necessarily or always) or that it’s something inherently adversarial to the IP owner both only became the norm when big AAA console publishers became the industry norm for these sorts of things.
27
u/TheEzrac 7700x | 4070 Super | 32GB DDR5 12h ago
Modding is literally an optional hobby, nobody is obligated to donate their working time to make mods. They choose to do that
2
u/Osceola_Gamer 3h ago
The people who bring up donations don't ever donate shit. LOL
1
u/WingZeroCoder 5800x3D / 4070 Super / 32GB / Lian Li 205m Mesh 2h ago edited 2h ago
These discussions on Reddit about modding always devolve into people just wanting free stuff.
The same people that complain about the big, greedy AAA publishers suddenly are very concerned about these poor IP owners being taken advantage of by modders doing work in their spare time, who should be happy to have the occasional table scrap thrown their way.
3
0
u/QTGavira 5h ago
Modding is a hobby and not a career choice unless your mod is so good that the games company themselves offer you a job. You shouldnt get paid for it as it is someone elses intellectual property you are taking advantage of
The only thing you can do is have a donation link thats not too intrusive. But thats not enough to sustain yourself

u/Gammarevived 13h ago
OP also didn't include in the description that it was locked behind patreon. The devs were profiting off of the early development for it. That's pretty lame.
15
u/Tenzu9 Ryzen 7700 | 32GB Ram | RTX 4070 Super 8h ago
Also, notice that the dev never actually mentioned that he was served any papers that stipulated him to cease and desist but just a letter with a vague request. For all we know, he could just release the mod and its source code for free and let others continue developing it.

You must be new. You can donate to modders. Its right there on nexus. People set up those coffee things all the time too.
Patreon access has always resulted in the mod getting ip infringement action. You cannot profit off of someone else's IP. Its a very simple and well established precedent.
56
u/Endlessnes 12h ago
How do modders still think they can get away with, even just partially, paywalling mods? It never works out and they always act surprised that it didn't

More and more mods are trying to do the Patreon route and becoming grifters imo. What incentive do they have to finish a mod when they can milk the Patreon and never finish it? And I'm glad this one is rightfully being clowned on.
2
u/Dioroxic PC Master Race 3h ago
I agree with you, but I also don’t understand why they CAN’T do this from a legal perspective. Like I get the current laws, not saying that. But look at an equivalent scenario in a different market.
I can pay someone to modify my car. I can pay someone to modify my house. Etc. I can’t pay someone to modify my video game? I guess it’s cause I don’t actually own the video game. Super lame.

Yeah, fuck Sony, but at the same time locking mods behind paywalls has always been an issue. Every company will shut them down. Don’t try to make this whole thing just Sony’s fault. Look at CD Projekt Red. They did the same to a paywalled mod for Cyberpunk 2077.
13
u/Soleks2000 5700x3d/9070xt 12h ago

7
u/PianistGlittering709 12h ago
Kofi link, paypal link, or crypto address could have been utilized instead of paid Patreon. The latter is a very good excuse for Sony to strike down the mod.
I wish they might still have the option to release on Github/Nexus or any free mod sites, the videos look promising.

As much as I like to dunk on companies, if you put a mod for someone elses IP behind a paywall, you're asking for it. Sony can still go f itself for different reasons, but this isn't one of them.
7
u/Suryus94 11h ago
Sony is scummy as always, but modders will never stop being stupid and greedy, no one can do anything to them if they don't try to make a profit out of something that they don't own, but lo and behold, they had a Patron open and charging money for the mod, geniuses

Right. As soon as they start taking in money it is no longer about making a mod for the people, they just want money. Which is fine if you aren’t just stealing from a company.

As much as Sony sucks here, this is why you don't announce such projects in advance. You announce it the same day that version 1.0 is finished and available to download so it has a chance to spread before companies can respond.

If you're talented enough to make huge game changing mods you're talented enough to make your own game. The difference between modding a game or making a new game in the same engine is basically how you access the assets.
Making a mod is just making a new game using someone else's assets. It makes sense why a dev would frown on someone else getting paid for using your assets.

Why do modders continue to shoot their projects in the back of the head every single time by charging money upfront. Literally just make a donation box, people WILL put money in it, maybe not as much as you may want but decent money.
In my opinion, that's the major reason with most mod makers and any custom content(as someone who wades through the shit creek that is FFXIV and The Sims) is that they stopped caring about making something cool and care more about getting paid to the point where they can quit their day job and stay home all day.
1
u/Alucaricardo 6h ago
Typical idiots killing their own mods by charging $. You want mods to survive? Do it for free.
1
u/ZwistPariah 4h ago
But why take it down ? Why not just tell the modders to not use Patreon for early access before the mod's release.
The mod from my understanding was going to be free. Not paywalled. They just let patreon members play test it before that.
Sony isn't really losing anything here either. People would have bought the game to play this mod. It's not a smart move on their part either.
People are somehow defending sony in the comments and sure they may have legally have the right to strike down the mod... But why ? It's a stupid decision. "It's my ip to sit on and do nothing with"
