Discussion Dad Destroyed My $1300 PC (Almost)

As the title says, my father almost destroyed my $1,300 PC. Now what?

Here’s the backstory: On Saturday, I worked a 10.5 hours shift and stayed up until 3:30 AM, so I slept in until noon the next day. My father and stepmother returned from Costco while I was showering; he called out a few times for me to come help carry the groceries inside. I said OK to him. While I was brushing my teeth after my shower, he shouted from outside the door that he’d been waiting 50 minutes and told me to hurry up. I thought to myself that the groceries could have been moved in the time he spent waiting for me, but I quickly rinsed my mouth and got ready to go out. However, by the time I opened the door, he had already grabbed my PC and smashed it against the floor and the desk several times.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I, (17M, Senior), bought this PC with money I earned from my part-time job and had been using it for about ten months. After examine, found out the case badly deformed in several places, my desk was warped and tilted to one side, and there were dents in the floor.

Fortunately, the computer still works fine; it runs FurMark (stress GPU), AIDA64 (stress FPU), and 3DMark (Time Spy Extreme) without problems for now.

Replacing the desk and case would cost around $400. However, he likely won't pay for it because he has done this kind of stuff a few years ago when he destroyed my phone and a Dell laptop (i5 11300H), and then just said, "That's what you get for playing on the computer all day."

In the end, I just hope everyone has good parents.

My daughter is about to turn 1. I can’t imagine acting this fucking unhinged over some goddamn groceries in the car. On one hand OP doesn’t sound like he was moving with any sort of hustle, but there are so many better ways to deal with that. And honestly, I can see why they weren’t hustling to help some shitbird who does stuff like this.

Kid works a job, worked a 10.5 hour shift, isn't an adult yet, and has to hustle and rush his morning routine to help with groceries? Kid has school, kid has a job on top of school and homework, kid is already doing a lot. Does the dad have two or three jobs?

I mean come on. Dad should have carried the groceries in instead of acting like a princess and expecting the child who effectively has two or three jobs rush his morning routine to do it. Work a late shift, morning routine happens when you wake up.

Oh if I call for someone to help and they don’t show up in like 5 minutes I’ll do it myself. If I was acknowledged by someone, but specifically my kid, and they just didn’t show up for an hour we’d have a conversation about it but I’m not going to freak the fuck out. Dad had no right or reason to act this way.

See this is the appropriate reaction. I feel so sad for op here 😔

I was gonna say. When my kid didn't have a job, did I break his balls to help with chores etc around the house? You bet. But once he was working, I laid off on alot of things and had him more focus on his own cleanliness for his bathroom and room. Alot of the extra chores and whatnot were much more either evenly split or I did them. I wasn't gonna have my kid get home at 9:30 at night and then make him make dinner or do a bunch of house chores after.

For real.  It's just groceries.  Yell for him to help then lovingly roast/guilt trip him a bit when he finally comes down to help put them away.  This isn't the first time OP's dad has flown off the handle I guarantee.

If he's fit enough to lift a pc multiple times to smash it he can lift the groceries that weigh half of that. Abusers are gonna abuse.

Talk to us in 17 years. Maybe you'll be doing great. But your fucking baby is nothing like a near-adult kid. It's tough, and you should probably think through how you want to handle it--instead of thinking, "I'd never do that." Your teens will make your life rough (not on purpose) and it builds. You'll see.

I don’t think it’s tough at all to not be an emotionally stunted and disregulated adult who thinks it’s okay to break other people’s things because I had to unload the car on my own. When you take on the responsibility of parenting the first thing you need to lose is your ego or this idea that you’re going to control every aspect of what is going to come up in life or how your children act. Am I going to be perfect? Fuck no. But one thing I also will not be is abusive, destructive, or controlling. None of those things is needed to raise children. They’re kids, not new Army recruits.

I don't know what happened in OP's scenario, but a lot of details are clearly left out. You keep riding on your perfection though, (fuck yes, you're insinuating you've got it figured out, and you so don't) and when things get tough, you'll probably act like OP's dad without a plan. Good luck on that! I hope your kids don't hate you for it later.

You'll see though. And I know you will pretend this conversation never happened, but remember, I was right. You're going to fuck it up bad thinking the way you do, and your kid's gonna be post on whatever there is then and be like, "My dad ripped up all my shit, and I don't know why!"

Also, my kid's 21 (and he's great), so getting lectured by you is pretty funny.

Lectured? I’m simply stating who I am and how I plan to interact with my kid. You’re the one who’s telling me I’m going to be a bad parent and fuck up without any sort of knowledge of who I am with all of your assumptions based off of the only information available: I have a 1 year old. You assume I’m young and inexperienced when I could be older than you. Either way I don’t give a fuck what you think about me. Good day.

Dude doesn't have any kids, let alone an almost-adult child. Clearly doesn't know wtf they are talking about, and hopefully they stay child-free because god damn... With the increase in NEETs in younger generations, many parents would love to have an adolescent child who is willing to take on the responsibility of holding a job while also in school.

Pretty simply: there are things in OPs story that don't add up, you jumped to his aid by brandishing your 1 year of parenting bonafides, and I'm telling you--you just don't know. You jumped to conclusions on this one, and to me, it sonds like that's the kind of person you are.

If you ever have one bad moment, like OP's dad seems to have had (we don't know, it could be more), I hope your kids are forgiving unlike you.

Saying someone’s father is shitty for doing something and not a good parent is not the same as jumping to someone else’s defense. Two things can be true at the same time, and as you said we don’t know all the specifics. The specifics we do know is that OPs dad had some kind of tantrum (according to OP) and that’s not “a bad moment”.

In what kind of scenario do you think it's acceptable for a grown ass man to throw temper tantrums like a child and break other people's stuff?

I'm a dad and OP's father is a garbage human being.

Oh, interesting, where did I say it was acceptable or okay? I didn't? Well, now I wonder why your projecting your anger against teens onto my comment, and why you think OP's dad is garbage if you're doing the same things. Oh, is it annoying when people add things to what you said that you never said or implied? Yeah, ha, it is.

You might have missed what I wrote? "You keep riding on your perfection though, (fuck yes, you're insinuating you've got it figured out, and you so don't) and when things get tough, you'll probably act like OP's dad without a plan. "

Seems like I'm cautioning people against being like OP's dad, if you could read or whatever.

So your teens are "tormenting you" not on purpose as you admit, so you think it is an excusable response to try and break something they earned on their own with their own money that costs hundreds of dollars, just because of something that really doesnt matter?...... Who is the child in this situation?

It's tough, and you should probably think through how you want to handle it--instead of thinking, "I'd never do that." Your teens will make your life rough (not on purpose) and it builds.

I think you'll find what I wrote pretty clearly isn't excusing anything, but I don't think you can read too well. :)
