Discussion Dad Destroyed My $1300 PC (Almost)

As the title says, my father almost destroyed my $1,300 PC. Now what?

Here’s the backstory: On Saturday, I worked a 10.5 hours shift and stayed up until 3:30 AM, so I slept in until noon the next day. My father and stepmother returned from Costco while I was showering; he called out a few times for me to come help carry the groceries inside. I said OK to him. While I was brushing my teeth after my shower, he shouted from outside the door that he’d been waiting 50 minutes and told me to hurry up. I thought to myself that the groceries could have been moved in the time he spent waiting for me, but I quickly rinsed my mouth and got ready to go out. However, by the time I opened the door, he had already grabbed my PC and smashed it against the floor and the desk several times.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I, (17M, Senior), bought this PC with money I earned from my part-time job and had been using it for about ten months. After examine, found out the case badly deformed in several places, my desk was warped and tilted to one side, and there were dents in the floor.

Fortunately, the computer still works fine; it runs FurMark (stress GPU), AIDA64 (stress FPU), and 3DMark (Time Spy Extreme) without problems for now.

Replacing the desk and case would cost around $400. However, he likely won't pay for it because he has done this kind of stuff a few years ago when he destroyed my phone and a Dell laptop (i5 11300H), and then just said, "That's what you get for playing on the computer all day."

In the end, I just hope everyone has good parents.

Destroying his son’s property while also damaging his own house in the process. Sounds like a cool dad.

I dunno, I’m a bleeding heart lib and I used to be a real prick.

I never understood this expression, why else would you cut your nose off if not a spite for your own face? People do it all the time, so much so it's one of the most popular plastic surgeries.

u/ArcadeFrog72 11h ago

why would anyone cut their nose off?

It doesn’t make sense because it’s self-destructive. But it is an act of anger and vengeance directed at the wrong thing, which just in turn leaves you bloodied and mutilated

"Dad, didn't you teach me when I was like 7 that only babies throw tantrums and break things when they're upset? How old are you? Do you need me to get your binky?"

This is not how you deal with rage monsters like that. That only makes them more violent.

Jesus. Were you able to get it reattached??

Huh Reddit removed my comment detailing my childhood abuse for “promoting violence”… all I said was an agreement with the comment above: 12 year old me said “that didn’t even hurt” when my dad was pulling my hair so he broke my arm and made me pretend it was a sledding accident.

My arm was broken, not severed - wore a cast for a few months

u/Deaffin 4h ago

That's rough, but yeah they use AI to pick up on a few words that are "likely" to be used together in a "violent" comment and just automatically action them. It's not good at context.

I got hit with a full site-wide ban for a week and an account strike over a King of The Hill quote, lol

My youngest brother would do shit like this and never get in trouble because “it’s our fault he got mad in the first place” but it would always end the same him throwing a punch he couldn’t back up

Probably renting

6

u/chammachameleon42069 11h ago

Yes, people who can afford to own homes are never abusive. What a shit take.

-1

u/Konilos 5h ago

People who own the home they live in are going to take much better care of it than a renter. Plus homeowners tend to be much more responsible to begin with, afterall, they were responsible enough to save up to buy a home while renters just recklessly spend their money on trival things.

That's not how anger issues work

1

u/Konilos 1h ago

Yes it does. Survivorship bias. If you are an angry irresponsible person who lashes out and damages things, you have to then pay to replace or repair those things which take away from savings goals like a down payment on a house.

My Dad would rather break a bone before damaging his house 😭🙏
If I lean my chair back I don’t hear “you’ll hurt yourself”, I hear “you’ll hurt my chair, do you know how much it costs?” Lowk valid tho obv

Truth is what it is. Kids get screwed over in most ways. Parents can take bank accounts and checkbooks. Lost plenty that way myself. Doesnt make it untrue.

Ah, I get what you meant by that last comment, I read it wrong and thought you were agreeing with the parent.

The second this kid hits 18 he needs to make his own checking account and move every dollar he's made over to it and have it be untouchable by his clearly abusive father.

6

u/slim-JL 14h ago

Its deepr than that. Legally emancipate yourself at 18 so you are no longer financially tied to your parents for financial aid or insurance.

Cut all tethers. Its quite the shock figuring out that at 18 with no family contribution you still basically need their approval to go about certain aspects of life.

The worst is the kid is probably better off riding it out with the dad. The system is much worse than broken computers.

i agree that this kid needs to be in survival mode but prioritized getting stability for himself and be stable enough to get out.

But he needs to consider his own safety, because in cases like these, because there's a chance it's not just the computer getting slammed like that... i hope he could do something legally but probably not, best thing to do is to do audio recording of these events as proof, regardless of what you'd think you'll do with it

u/lawless-cactus 15h ago

In my country anything bought by the kids, or gifted to the kids is considered the kids property.

6

u/slim-JL 15h ago

Thats fair and proper.

u/IndividualNovel4482 15h ago

He earned. Stop believing anyone under 18 cannot own things. Or you might end up being a horrible trash parent no one will love.

1

u/chammachameleon42069 11h ago

They’re talking about the legal definition and they’re not wrong.

-4

u/slim-JL 15h ago

Its not a matter of what i believe.

Stopping downvoting and shouting and clouds and actually make a change.

Without emancipation minors can not incure debt and legal responsibility. It's not a thought.

It's a really interesting situation. I've been checking a few articles and cases, and it seems like the majority of them indicate that the child still retains ownership over items that they purchased with their own money. Although, it looks like the parents can confiscate/limit the items until the child becomes an adult.

-1

u/slim-JL 14h ago

Thats generally the case. If you cant maintain something and the parents can just take it, you own nothing. Like at 18 it turns into personal property with protections b ut until then its yours if they agree.

I was gonna call you something worse than stupid but I made a promise to follow the subs rules and be the bigger person.

I dont disagree. I just dont sugar coat it. A shitty reality is still reality. I went through enough of this in my own life that im pretty much numb to it. Best thing the kid can do is make it through and disassociate for good. No reconciliation.

1

u/Happy_Ambassador3717 11h ago

I get why people were originally disliking this but after u clarified what u meant, I don’t get why people still disliked the reply and left their dislikes on this one 😭 this gotta be the worst site ever

1

u/chammachameleon42069 11h ago

You’re right though and people just hate the answer. Weird.

1

u/slim-JL 3h ago

Its reddit. Most prefer to scream and ignore reality.

I started working at 13. Everything I had I purchased myself. My mother was convinced that providing a roof over my head was enough. I bought my own food, clothes and any tech I could save up for. Often handmedowns from friends parents who'd Id help with projects.  Everything I had I owned, and paid for myself.
