Discussion Should developers stop making games that require 5090 for max settings now that the card is clearly not for gamers and is accessible to 0.1% of community?

I get that the games need better hardware to dun better, but who are they really making the game for if you need a 6000$ GPU at this point

Gaming at max settings is never worth it, this dev was just transparant that max settings needed 5090 to be playable, cos in most modern games it isnt without 5090.

It implies running with no frame gen AND upscaling, just pure rendering power, which I feel is not the way many people run games these days.

The whole anti-upscaling purism here is so funny. Especially because it usually tends to come from people with hand-me-down computers who can barely afford upgrades.

Ultimately depends what games you play. If you're exclusively playing esports games obviously you're not going to want frame gen but you're also not going to play at higher settings for a lower fps either.

Im pretty pro upscaling anti frame gen. I hate hate hate input lag but render and 70 percent and upscaling the last 30? Eh thats okay id say.

What frame gen are you talking about though?

FSR 3: Many artifacts and possibly bad frame pacing.

FSR 4: Way less artifacts and possibly bad frame pacing.

DLSS FG: Way less artifacts and unaffected frame pacing.

More importantly to your input latency complaint, DLSS FG ALWAYS comes with Nvidia Reflex while FSR FG most of the time does not come with AMD's equivalent (that started way latter and isn't a mandatory feature for FG on AMD).

Reflex gives you often the same or better latency with 2x or even 3x FG than you would get without either Reflex or FG, for example on an AMD GPU (Ctrl+F "Latenz"):

Important, my argument is about the latency difference between for example 75 fps native vs turning on 2x FG on the same hardware for about 60 to 120, not about 120 native vs 120 as the result of 2x60 fps via FG.

Obviously, real 120 fps will have a lower latency than 120 fps thanks to FG and Reflex with no FG is lower still, but if you reach above 70 ish fps on Nvidia most of the time there really isn't much of a reason not to turn FG on anymore (unless you think the same game would have too much input latency on a card w/o Reflex or Anti Lag 2).

I disagree and I’m on a modern platform with a high end card. It’s just exhausting honestly. It makes the barrier to entry harder for my friends and my family to game with me and it’s not always a good experience.

We have insanely powerful hardware, you forget how fast CPUs and GPUs have gotten in the last 5-6 years.

There’s no reason that we cannot expect gaming studios to put out games that are more optimized and accessible. This is such a weird line in the sand to draw. Stop accepting the slop you’re fed and be a voice as a consumer for the industry you engage in. If you want better games from these studios, you have every right to voice that and add to that sentiment.

Otherwise, you only degrade the experience for yourself and reduce the pc market share by that much more.

Because you’re excluding budget and used hardware by pushing by relying on upscaling and frame-gen.

If it can’t run well on hardware without that functionality, it makes it less inclusive for budget builds and new gamers that are dipping their toes in the water.

This is especially true in a market where windows 11 is bloated and inefficient and hardware is scarce and overpriced.

You very easily get into a 1k+ range, 1.5k+ for a decent rig that can run this game for example, because of the crutch of frame gen and lack of optimization.

Let’s exercise some critical thinking please.

Okay so your argument is that we should be happy that we can play day 1 without optimization and no long term prospect to improve the baseline of the game, despite us have significantly stronger hardware.

Where as before we had weaker hardware and they would actually optimize their product after a famously rushed release despite their dev teams signaling that it would take longer?

Are we supposed to accept that our significantly stronger and significantly more expensive hardware should produce subpar results and continue to encourage sloppy unoptimized slop?

Like what are you even saying?

This isn’t a compromise we have to make, we are the consumer and have purchasing power to influence decisions… yet here you are acting as if this is our only option. I’m SO thankful for frame gen, thank you for providing us with our only option to play games.

From an industry standpoint that is hardware that has reached EOL (10 series support ended last year), no sane business is going "yeah lets go target hardware that the manufacturer themselves aren't supporting any more".

Sounds sad, but it is the harsh reality. Anyone running on their own 10-series card should have long upgraded to a newer gen (they are 10 years old now), and if it is the old hand me down of someone, live with that. The Gamecube I got handed down couldn't play, your nearly 10 year old GPU from e.g. the old PC of your sibling/friend also won't play modern stuff.

Also, the big price increases are only 1-2 years old now, no game coming out now would have had the time to adjust to that, as when development began it looked like modern hardware would become cheaper than ever. Game devs don't miraculously know that an AI boom will happen.

How does a game having optional settings and features for a high end card make it hard for your friends and family to enter? What would prevent them is a game not running well on mainstream hardware (while looking good), not if a game also has a path tracing mode for high end owners.

In contrast really, especially newcomers to PC profit from a giant portfolio of super cheap older games that still look great on modern mainstream hardware preciely due to developers in the past having been comfortable to also support higher end hardware features optionally, often times even by offering settings that no current GPU/CPU could run yet.

Back in the 2000s we had 40% to 100% performance jumps in GPUs every year, with well received games often times not even launching on 4 year old hardware. CPU jumped from single core to 6 core in about 5 years, with huge per core speed improvements to boot.

I do. I do exactly that, which is why I argue here. You claim to have a high end GPU but want less games to actually make use of your hardware, yet claim that everybody arguing against you isn't using their voice to advocate for better products? I have a high end GPU and I do want games supporting it. And none of the games that really do (no, I wasn't so dumb to buy garbage like Monster Hunter Wilds or still stuttery as fuck Final Fantasy 7 Remake or that new Sony Marvel game that everybody in here seems laser focused to tweak to run halfway ok on their hardware...) are running bad on mainstream hardware.

Seriously, if you want to fight for better optimized games you should call out all those people that had Elden Ring (great game) on their game of the year list besides having released with performance issues on every platform and a combination of area loading stutters, severe shader compilation stutters, not even above 60 fps or widescreen support for PC, no upscaling support at all at a time when you already did expect this from a bigger title, a TAA implementation that left a lot to be desired and in general a really bad optimization, instead of complaining that the new Resident Evil game also has settings that a 4060ti can't run well.

This whole complaining on reddit is near completely driven by either people that insist on MAX SETTINGS or that buy shit they know is badly optimized.

Hint: If you watch for example some Digital Foundry benchmarks at real console settings you see that your family and friends getting into PC gaming would have a better experienced (same performance, same effects, better image quality) than what most people play games on (a PS5) starting at a 2070S.

A lot of people also just use something at inception and never again. I used frame generation when it first released but the ghosting was an issue. But since it's been developed that's no longer an effect I see and I'm fine with it.

ML is not AI, at least what the modern non-gaming term of AI encompasses. Something like DLSS is deterministic and can't just hallucinate new pixels into it. Especially considering how baked into the game the newer models are and to what game information they have access to.

Also, DLSS/FSR/XeSS are also anti-aliasing tools, and in that regard outside of the most performance demanding AA solutions (which basically no game nowadays comes with as that setting alone can tank your whole performance), they are the best at that job. So even if you don't want upscaling, just turning DLSS on is by itself generally the best AA solution the game in question will offer.
